this is not really related to the video but do you know if Maries Artist soft pastel (or just the brand in general) animal cruelty free? it has a pigment of Ivory black and Paynes gray which known usually made from animal bones but at the same time they also could be just using the name yk? please do reply if you know, its been on my mind for awhile now😭
Here's the thing... I use "professional" paints of all mediums. I also use cheap priced paints, and here is what I've noticed as a life long artist of 40 years. The terms Professional-Artist-Student...are all marketing schemes to sell to a wider array of artists. Whether it be starving artists, craft youtubers, or professional painters who sell art. All paint has it's use on a painting. I find the cheaper stuff works great for washes, faded looks, even blending. If you're reading this...don't get caught up on the materials you have. Just grab yourself the largest selection possible, play with it all, and you'll find all paints of all prices, pigment quality, and consistencies can be used every day in beautiful works of art. As a parent with a full time day job, I alternate days between art and sleep. So, about 3 times a week I do art. The other two days I focus on ideas and, like I said, sleep, because on the days I do paint….I can be up until 1am working on an art piece and I feel less bad about that if I know that the next night I can go to bed early. Great video. Love what you created.
I just wanted to tell you I think that deer painting you say you hate is really great! I love how the light in the background filters into the middle and foreground, it gives it a nice amount of depth and frames the focal point well. Maybe it’s not your typical color scheme which I know can be uncomfortable but I think the color scheme works well and feels realistic for this setting - a misty, dewy grey-green, dotted with little golden deer. Such cute subject matter! I love it.
It's hard to make time for art with a full time job for me as well. It's amazing how much you can do in one week if you stick with it! I loved the bear piece 🐻
This is such a lovely video, well-edited too. And your advice is very helpful and inspiring. Thank you! 🤗 Another tip I came across is to set a timer for when you're drawing/painting on location. That way, you will have a better idea of how much detail you can put in etc. And your travel companions will know how long they'll have to entertain themselves.

What about some paints that’s acrylic or oil sticks and oil pastels like sennelier brand and Fredrix canvas roll pad ? Going to Floraida for my grandfathers memorial around may . SCARRY thing happened to my grandfather though but while I’m There I need my art supplies and I’m always carrying heavy things that’s not really necessary and stretched 16 x20 canvases . So trying to pack easy

I love your sketchbook, and the way you give us a tour through it is so pleasant. Thank you very much. The way you can get your gouache so buttery smooth is very impressive. And even the watered-down gouache still looks great. So I can imagine it's not your watercolour skills that hold you back but that you're fighting your materials. Could it be that maybe your watercolour paint is just not very good, or doesn't work well on that particular paper? And finally, a question. You mention being inspired by an artist because of the way they do shadows (for your table setting still life). What is that artist's name? I didn't catch it. I also adore that style of super crisp shadows and lights and would love to learn more about the artist and their approach.
Thank you so much for your comment! I think the artist I was referencing was Wayne Thiebaud. I love the way he would incorporate contrast and bright colors into his shadows.

In return, I wanted to recommend an artist whose super crisp light/shadows I really like, but I can't find them right now. They've gone missing somewhere in my instagram jungle. You probably know this already, but I saw you mention donating your old supplies: Over at the junction of Foster and Division, there's an art store called I've Been Framed. They buy your old supplies and, even better, give you store credit to get...new supplies. It's not the cheapest place in town, but they've got a pretty wide variety of stuff, both used and new, and I believe that they have a donation program for anything they don't want to buy. Like half my supplies lately have been from there, thanks to a big fat spring cleaning in the dead of winter. :D
Hey Kat! sorry for the late reply, I was taking a break from RU-vid. I haven't found great budget so options so far, though I haven't tried that many. I love holbine gouache and windsor and newton, but they aren't budget. If I get enough comments maybe ill try some budget brand gouache for a video.
@@HelloItsDorothy Thank you for getting back to me. The lady at Michaels recommended Himi Gouache but it seems expensive and messy so I just got some cheap gouache from Michaels. I haven't tried them yet though.
@@craftykat I have found that the Arteza gouache is decent budget gouache. It's not as good as Holbein or Winsor and Newton but it is decent for the price. You can get a set of 12 pretty cheap. I didn't like the HIMI gouache. It was too watery and I don't like the big plastic container.
