They were both in a mutually beneficial alliance and Japan sensing an imminent victory for Germany decided to join the Axis powers hoping to benefit. It’s possible had America fallen Germany would continue to share the spoils of war so long as Japan remain weaker and continue to meet their demands for trade. Cannot comment on that one, but my great grand parents died in Soviet concentration camps after WW2. Males an females. My grandmother had to watch them die for lack of food.
