LEADERSproject is the RU-vid home of the video modules that you can find on our main page www.leadersproject.org. LEADERSproject seeks to bring best practice from research as well as law and policy to every day speech language pathologists practicing in the field.

On our main page you can find more information about the videos as well as related documents and information to support. Some of our videos will soon be offered along with quizzes and can provide CEUs for ASHA.

In the 9 years since this video was produced, there have been advances in the diagnosis of childhood apraxia of speech. The work of Overby, Caspari, and Schreiber (2019) describes the early indicators that are seen in young children who are later diagnosed with childhood apraxia of speech. Please consider updating this video and consider using the Mayo 10+1 checklist to document signs of apraxia across multiple tasks.

Hi. My son is autistic. He started speaking many words meaningfully like Cow, Dog, etc. but when I ask him what's this he never answers. This is happening from 3 the last 3-4 months. Can you please tell us what should we do? We already don't listen to his gesture requests.

Too many SLPs/SLTs/fonos/logopedas use nonspeech oral motor exercises to improve speech with the result that the children continuing to speak often with greatly reduced intelligibility. Here are some scientific peer-reviewed articles showing that these nonspeech exercises do not work. Parra-López, P.; Olmos-Soria, M.; Valero-García, A.V. Nonverbal Oro-Motor Exercises: Do They Really Work for Phonoarticulatory Difficulties? Int. J. Environ. Res. Public Health 2022, 19, 5459. doi.org/10.3390/ijerph19095459 (open access). Ruscello, D. As an slp i believe and have very postive outcomes using oral motor in speech and swallowing therapy. There are many different oral motor exercises that I use to promote change. Oral motor will not improve language but can help with accuracy of productuction of vowel and consonant sounds. Some examples of programs that facilitate speech clarity is Beckman Oral Motor, MNRI Oral faciel program and more. When such exercises are done in conjunction with conventional articulation exercises, I've seen significant improvement in speech clarity.

Simply saying that these nonspeech oral motor exercises work in your clinical opinion is just that--an opinion that is contrary to the evidence. I've taken my daughter to several SLPs since only a few weeks old due to feeding troubles with cleft lip and palate. She's 18 months old now. I've heard most if not all of these statements from our therapists. She's speech delayed, and they're still focused on feeding, ie chewing, drinking from a straw and cup. While she could benefit from eating a little better I suppose, my main concern is her lack of speech development. She was also diagnosed with a genetic condition that has speech problems. So, I'm a little frustrated at the moment because it seems like no one is helping her develop speech and language besides her family at home who are always talking, signing, playing with her.

Most important now is to stay connected to your cleft and craniofacial team where you will get recommendations from experts who know your child and know cleft speech and feeding and what your child needs. Of course, proper nutrition and feeding is critical. At 18 months old, her palate is likely repaired. Sometimes it is hard to find an SLP who has cleft speech expertise but there will be an cleft SLP on the team who can guide you. What your family is doing is right on for her language delays. She should also be able to receive services through your State's early intervention services. She would have to be evaluated to see if she qualifies. Here is a link for a free course on cleft speech and feeding that can provide you with some information. www.leadersproject.org/ceu-courses-2/english-cleft-palate-speech-therapy-evaluation-and-treatment-asha-0-5-ceu-self-study-course/
