Great Advice bro. So what kind of insurance is needed to start roadside assistance and towing business and is there a preferred company to use for a good rate. And a package for all permits licenses and coverages?
My car got towed last year, and I got charged about $275. That's why we want to get into this business. But you said the motor club one call is $20-30?? I mean it's cheaper than an Uber. How does that make sense and how can it support the business. The insurance is about $3500 a month.
But... I will also say do not get into this business for money or have the thought you can make xxxxxxx amount of money. You will fail or be miserable, maybe both. This is a business that you have to fully enjoy or you won't make it.
I could tell tales about IAA and the unbelievqble amount of non sense and disrespect weve gotten from them since they got bought out a few years back to include dispatching cars they never vetting or called on themselves, demanding us to be on the road more than the law allows, started dispatching cars to us premarked as late, waiting till 3pm or later to dispatch cars and demanding them brought in that day, stopped dispatching work for the next day and started making us wait till 9am or later for our first run, brought in a cat team they were paying 2 grand a day and giving them work before us claiming the cat team was there because we couldnt keep up but we couldnt "keep up" because NO ONE was dispatching but the branch manager and she was waiting so late in the day to even give us work and when we got back with that we would sit around an empty office for an hour or more before she stopped playing on her phone long enough to give us another run. IAA wasnt too bad before... especially if you owned the truck and drove it but now.... I flat out told my boss im done with em dont send me back there and since that convo hes agreed because they started doing it to him as well directly. Anyone thinking of working for this company.... go outside, pull the hood back on your truck, take out the engine and replacebit withbone that doesnt run..... because in a few years when you put 500,000 miles on it thats how its gonna be .... and stay cause they dont pay enough to replace it. If you plan on paying someone to drive your truck .... youll do better selling everything and stocking shelves at walmart unless you plan on never changing the oil or repairing anything that wears out.... and it will... quickly.
Hey man I just wanted to say thanks. I’m a combat veteran that is currently running my dad’s heavy equipment company, I’ve been doing so for 10 years but things are bad with him so it’s time for me to move. I saw all that to say that I’m extremely driven/ hungry (I have a family to feed) and I have been around trucks and equipment my entire life so having a tow truck is some sort has always been a low key dream of mine. I’d love a rotator but I don’t have the experience or a million dollars. I think if I get a truck I’m going to buy a light duty like a ram 5500 or a small Kenworth. I’ll comment more but I really appreciate your information your passing on. It’s great info and I like that you’re prefacing all of this with saying “hey this is how we do it here, that doesn’t mean that’ll work where you are.”. Cheers man
Good luck! It's a great business if your heart is in it. Buy the biggest piece of equipment that will do the most work. I wouldn't buy an f550 unless its a twin line wrecker. But any questions please ask. Im going to try to do more videos as i have time. Just been busy with transports
A good rule to remember that my granddaddy taught me was the first one to speak about money is a loser that being said, I interpreted it as get all the information you can before you give them a quote
I have a tow truck company based out of Alpharetta and we are 75 and four or 85 and four if I gotta use ramps it’s out automatically 125. If I don’t wanna do it, I price it real high and if they go for it, then I do it and if they pay cash, I’ll give them a discount.
How am I supposed to get my foot in the door though. I want to atleast get a job and help out towing to see if it’s what I want to do. I can’t find anything other than cdl towing nobody is hiring
Keep looking. Not sure of your area but the larger companies or even the local AAA contractor usually will hire. As much as AAA is hated in the industry, it's typically less hectic calls which is good for someone learning before you get thrown at recovery jobs
I have a pick up and a trailer and was wandering if its possible to start with this or preferably i would like to deliver cars for a dealership or something like that how do i get the jobs?
Hey man just wanna say thank u very much for this video I know it’s 2 years old but it gave me a way into the business with out having the funding to buy a tow truck I saved for 3 months and bought a truck out right so seriously thank u
Awesome advice. Only thing I learned with my first rollback. Make sure your business insurance is covers what you haul. Most towing policies DO NOT cover moving containers or non automotive cargo. You do not want to be moving something and have a bad day and your insurance not cover, and most likely drop you.
@@Guardianautoservices this comment may come up twice, sorry. I have commercial driving and heavy equipment experience but never had any experience with a tow truck.
@@JosephTrees-ep6fo the best is going to be getting experience with a company. But, you could use the experience you have and focus on equipment and materials hauling. Might be better for your skill set.
Liked the video. Keep making them. I have a question about pricing when called out by law enforcement. Does the city, county or state set the amount for the tows? Is it a preset amount that doesnt change from wrecker service to wrecker service?
im considering starting, watching my costs to see if worthwhile, not where i live, but city my Fiance' lives in, as i am rural, too many people tow here, too many rednecks with pickup trailer advertising $35-$50 to tow. she lives 3 miles from major interstate, plus within 10 miles from 2 other interstates, and several decent cities close. for a wrecker im looking at vintage, to get cheap, so no expense, then to rebuild it myself, so starting with rebuilt truck, Im browsing for 1960's to mid 1990's American made, then once I go over, nothing but maintenance. yes I will plan to rebuild engine, new clutch, pressure plates, fully rebuild hydraulics, brakes, so for probably $25K have a great vehicle, & no i wouldnt plan to replace in 3 years, just build another, I have been in restoration scene most of my life, so I can do body work as well as mechanical, and I dont really think anything of it. rebuilt thousands of vehicles in my life, so why not build a wrecker or rollback? I am also a very capable welder, but im at a point I am hurting to do work like I once was, & to me running a wrecker would be easier than doing mechanic work daily, my back cant take day in and out bent over a car hood. a few hours yes, but not everyday
Brother this was a great video. I’ve been debating on hopping on with a company and getting some towing under my belt. My own roadside is definitely a goal of mine. This vid definitely helped me decide 🤘🏻
i contacted co-part, i got rejected, but based on all i have read and seen since, im glad! i think it was due to lack of recent experience? i drove 1988-1995, rollbacks and wreckers, but none since, im browsing for a rollback with a lift too. plan to carry dollies as well. I got to sell a few items to be able to afford a rollback. I honestly prefer a wrecker, but at first i plan to get rollback, as where my fiance lives, 100 miles away, there are quite a few interstates, its rare for me to not see a car or 5 broke down on the 20 miles I drive to get to her house, where i live, just rural mountains, a wrecker would make more sense, but I believe near major interstates, all the wrecks, I would be better in a rollback there? as to comment on clean cut, I have never been, nor will I ever be, i keep a beard usually 1 foot long, plus hair 1/2 down my back, already had people refuse to hire me, because I wont conform, there is no reason to start now!
