My Beach tree is not doing well. The leaves are small and curling. Some branches are bare with no leaves.

I agree, an excellent video, organized like a cooking demo. I've been planting trees (and other plants & shrubs) for a long time, and I have always wanted to amend the soil because for the most part/most yards, I've only had hard red clay to contend with. I can't imagine anything surviving in it. Just started a hole in it the other day, to plant a small redbud, but the rain caught us, and we had to leave it till it cleared up for a few days. The first day the bowl was filled with water. I am very tempted to add more organic matter mixed with sand and permatil when we finish the job today!

Remember to score the bowl... you essentially need cracks in that cereal bowl! LOL!

You guys are AMAZING! You answered so many questions I had. I just bought a house with lots of place for trees and I have no clue how to deal with this. I learnt sooo much!!! Thank you! Definitely will come to volunteer!

Wow, that is the best video so far on how to plant a tree. What I found interesting is that they don't use any other soil to mix in! I have red clay and want to plant trees but have no clue what tree would survive this soil!

Amending the soil is typically not necessary nor recommended. Dig the proper size hole, score the sides of the hole (to help roots break through), and off you go! We typically keep the excess dirt from the pot and use it to create the "donut ring" around the root zone to help keep water contained. Good luck planting new trees! Trees are really resilent when planted properly and watered until established.

The Celtis genus (Hackberries) is the larval host of up to 46 species of butterflies and moths in the atlanta area according to National Wildlife Federation. Please don’t use systemic pesticides on native plants without a serious need!

I love this. What a great diversity of wildlife we have. It is our responsibility to ensure they have clean drinking water, food security and a safe and livable habitat like all Atlanta metro citizens. Thank you for doing this!

Sally and Doug-great combo. As a senior, I especially appreciate seeing such passion, insights, and productivity in them. They’re helping to save our planet, and we can all join them. Indeed, it is imperative that we do.

Don't do permaculture. Do Fukuoka natural farming. I do kind of both. But natural farming is superior and it doesn't require any work. I sow daikon seeds randomly and they grow naturally everywhere in my property. I don't eat daikon root but leaves instead cause my soil is too poor. This year I will collect more daikon seed for microgreens to have some vegetables in the winter. We should learn how to work with nature with minimal human interference. I started with almost BARREN land and now I have food from native as well as nonnative fruit trees and vegetables, such as elderberries, Indian plum, sunchoke, serviceberries, black locust flowers, ... Natural farming, not permaculture, is the only solution to human food problem in the long run.

A good option is to plant an annual like oats mixed with the native grass. The oats will outcompete the weeds the first year then by the second year the native grass will begin to emerge.
