Could you graft a desirable native oak, that is naturally very large and takes many years to make acorns, onto another oak's rootstock that is smaller, to control the size? Would it fruit sooner? There is a dwarf variety of Quercus garryana endemic to the Siskyou Mountains (var breweri).

Per the one question towards the end, I think if you did some research on west coast development and preservation rules, you might find that in many places Garry oaks specifically are protected, and so you will often see oaks and possibly other trees being protected from the development work. How effective it is for long term tree survival, would be a question for the inspectors who are supposed to monitor the biological impacts. But there are rules.

This was a great presentation! I live in South Spokane County (Zone 6) where we don’t have any native oaks, but I would like to plant a couple on my property. I have read conflicting information on what zones the Oregon White Oak will grow ranging from zones 4-7. We live in an area prone to drought which the Oregon white oak seems to tolerate. Would this be a good addition to my property (along with plenty of true natives), or should I go with a Northern Red Oak that I know can tolerate temps below zone 6?

With a new mortgage has come several Oregon White Oaks, Quercus garry, I'm told. Lot size is about 100 x 100'; location SW Washington, Clark County. This is in a development with an HOA. Most of the lawn is gone and I'm about to remove most of what is left. Wish me luck with the HOA. Thank you so much for this talk.

This is a great presentation. Doug Tallamy is an incredibly knowledgeable resource! I will recommend and share this widely. Oregon needs its oaks back.

Excellent talk. This is what you hope from a webinar - I *thought* I knew about oaks - I learned a ton. This guy knows his stuff. Learned about cicadas, gall wasps, growth rates, oak myths, and biodiversity. Thanks Columbia Land Trust and Doug Tallamy!

Chuck Sams (Chuck F. Sams III) has been unanimously confirmed by the US Senate (November 18, 2021) as the first Native American to serve as director of the National Park Service in its 105-year history. Score one for rationality and decency. May it start a trend.

I remember living next door to Leonard and Betty schmid in Trout Lake, and she always let me help out on the farm feeding baby calves or checking on baby chicks...really great genuine people very close friends to all of us!

this idea is great....but I've walked those creeks that lead to the lake...i personally don't think the salmon with return upstream there's places where the water is so shallow against rock bed it would be hard to imagine even a small.fish going upstream

The picture of the bear was my grandmother Bertha Schmids father. He had to get rid of the bear as it tried to take candy from the kids! Her family was very large and strong pioneers. I knew many of them and their farms. I spent many summers, working on my Aunt (sister to Bertha) and uncle's farm, that was the Jennings place at the time. It was a wonderful dairy farm. I also lived and went to school in Trout Lake in the late 60s. It is wonderful to see some of the family farms still running and loved. Yes too much is lost! Keep up the good work.

I'm very excited to see this creek restored to a free-flowing spawning creek for salmon and steelhead. This is a perfect example of a dam that is serving absolutely no use anymore and causing harm.

The stick is not on the insect's back, rather the insect (a caddisfly larvae) lives inside that house of sticks that it made by gluing tiny pieces of shredded wood together.
