Hi, I’m Miguel, the OldBrokenSkater, a dad in my 40s who’s rediscovered his passion for both skateboarding and surfing after 20+ years and multiple knee surgeries. This channel brings you the best of both worlds: skate sessions and POV surf adventures across New England’s coastlines and parks. You’ll also catch the action from other surfers as I capture their epic sessions. Whether you’re into concrete or catching waves, I’m here to inspire anyone who feels like life-or injury-might have taken them out of the game. Subscribe to follow my journey and pick up some tips, stoke, and motivation along the way!
Thanks!!! Use to be able to get them and 10's consistently. Hopefully in time I'll get them back. One stand up is better than none. I'm sure if you got the opportunity to do it often you'd get the hang of it quick!
Thanks! Its still somewhat warm but will be getting colder quick as winter is coming soon. Water temps will be 55f(12c) down to 32(0c) through the winter months. It will be interesting how long I'll make it, I hate the cold 😂
Thanks Wes! So much fun getting back it and the waves this past week have been manageable. Hoping to keep it going along side the skating, both are such a great escape. I'm sure I'll get some good clips of me getting dusted in some bigger surf 😂
@@OldBrokenSkater I would be happy just riding those I miss it but ever since my shoulder replacement I haven’t been able to surf! That’s ok I still get out there on a bodyboard I can get to my knees with that so still doing what I can do! Can’t wait to see more!
Just being able to ride something is awesome no matter what you're on. Been seeing a lot more folks with injuries who do the same and also do mat surfing and knee boarding like back in the 60's-70's.
Aww man, I gotta get to the park and give hand-plants a try. I've got a really solid handstand practice (both on and off my board), so hopefully they wouldn't take too much time to learn. Did you try any on your right hand?
If you've got handstands down, I think you'd excel at this trick quickly. I tried to do it with my right hand, but it felt awkward as a goofy foot, and also that would put me frontside on the ramp, which is a weakness of mine. The left hand allowed me to go at it backside, which gives you a full visual of where you are and where you're landing (at least for me). I'd say the hardest parts are timing the pop/early grab and finding a comfortable grab. Starting on flat, then working up the transition seemed to work best for me. I found a melon grab to be comfortable and also allowed me to pull the board up against my feet. Hopefully, you try it out and get it. I was super surprised at how achievable this is on regular ramps; I used to think it was limited to vert. Good luck!!
Do the 56 mm Nano's give you wheel bite with the Thunder? I ride 52mm on my Thunders, but I have .125 risers and was wondering about getting bigger wheels.
Hi! So far no wheel bite, I did buy risers in case and haven't had to use them. I also have a pair of 60's and those are definitely to big, thats why I ended up with 56 nanos...which have been great wheels
Super sketchy and really uncomfortable trick, I'll probably only ever do them on very small rails. Hopefully I'll get a video up soon, loving the new wider setup so far.
I started skating in 1988 when I was 4 and it was my passion my whole life. Unfortunately age has made previous injuries worse, torn ligaments several ruptured disk and so on and I can't skate anymore. I think about it everyday and even dream about it, I feel like im missing part of my soul. It's good to see someone around my age getting at it again just be careful you probably know all too well a fall in our 20s was nothing but the same fall now would put us in the ICU lol. Keep shredding it dude.
Thanks bro!!! I'm super grateful I can still have skate days. Falls are brutal now, that's for sure. I try to take a 'chill' approach as much as I can. My knees have been through the wringer, and I baby them as much as possible. The military tore them and my back up, so these days I try to keep it as mild as possible in hopes of getting a few more years.
I tried a few but started to shift my bodyweight the wrong way causing more of the slide outs where you look at the rail as your about to fall. I think when I started "center" my weight on the bar the rotation of my shoulders just made it super easy to come out fakie....if that makes sense. Want to try again but coming out regular, just need to get the right "center" of balance on rail.
Sick yard sesh! Those BS slides scare the hell out of me as I tried them a couple years back and landing flat like you did. Respect for sticking with and landing a handful, looked proper smooth 👊🏻
@@OldBrokenSkater🤣 move on…. What’s next on your agenda? I’m a bit out for a while as I tweaked my lower back again on the half cab board slide learns from Sunday. Wasn’t cleaned up but landed, paying the price now though 🥸🤣
I gotta catch up on your vids! Hopefully you're not out long. Whats next......I still gotta find that 5 staircase, more transition skating on the old school board (really digging it), and flip tricks😂 these will definitely get me out a few days
@@OldBrokenSkater yes, 5 set!!!! Now your talking 🤘🏻 Flips tricks sound great. I feel sorry for you if your catching up on my vids, been a great couple weeks of tricks but there’s plenty of waffle to hear too 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@OldBrokenSkater thats awesome, I love my egg set up, but I recently stepped back on my 8.25 popsicle as it's my street set-up and it felt really light. Just not as easy to control and keep under your feet... but I will be skating it all next week as I'm doing some street skating and trying out new wheels on it
It was such a good feeling to somewhat figure them out. i really think it was a confidence battle, this trick has always made me a bit nervous for some reason. True test will be getting a few at the park I skate with the really long rail😂
i am 48 and started skating again last year i recently tried those for the first time (maybe 2 out of 10 work, not really good yet). i found it so scary to ollie backwards onto the rail so the first 50 tries i did a stationary back 90 ollie and balanced on the rail. i wish i had a rail like that, the one at my skatepark is higher. keep shreddin'
It's such an uncomfortable feeling having to ollie almost blindly backwards. The lower rail does help but the fear of smashing face first after sliding out is always there😂. If I had a square rail I would totally try balancing these first. I was telling another friend below if you can have a local metal shop make one you could cut the cost down of getting a lower rail for the house. Some of the rails at the parks are nuts, took me a few months to find one I really like, its like 8" of the ground.
Nice job on the board slides. I really want a rail, but can’t justify the price. I have a welder, so need to get some wire run and I’ll be able to make my own I’m progressing on heelflips. I made a breakthrough today and this morning’s session felt really good. No lands, but just the feel of my flick was decent. Got a nice back foot land too. I feel they’re close Also did some ollies up our curb. 10/10 lands. Doing it feels scary still, but getting better at them. Even got one really good pop that was at least a few inches higher than the 7” curb, so I’m stoked on that
Dude lots of progress!! Conragts!! The more you do the ollies up things the more muscle memory comes back or develops. Been meaning to try heel flips but always forget, those are super fun in my opinion. Thanks also! Board slides have been fun to learn again on a lower rail. The rails are definitely pricey and I wish I had just Googled a metal shop locally. There's one in my town that would have made one for less than 200 and longer. If you make one try and make it 8' if you can. The 6' is just to short and I would also opt for a square or beveled square rail. Wish I knew how to weld, hopefully you make one!
Thanks! I was just saying I didn't know what that trick was called, just remember doing them a ton growing up. I would caveman everywhere, and since the board is in the hand, you can flip it and twist it whatever way you want. Really want to start figuring out boneless tricks.
@@OldBrokenSkater awesome yeah the finger flips are a good progression. I've only tried them once as I mostly do that trick on a bank to fakie now and don't need the extra level of difficulty just yet! Be cool to see you do some boneless tricks and then progress them onto your little grind box. Boneless to 5050!
Thanks, Simon! The very first one was a 360 flip, and all the rest I tried were varial kickflips... at least that's what we called them growing up. Gotta get these bones to jump higher to land these!
Thanks! Wasn't sure what that trick was called; I remember doing it a lot back in the day. Hoping to get a few shorts of surfing up-the whole camera thing is a pain to figure out. Hopefully, we skate soon! No waves for a while now.
Yeah I have been really afraid to try the frontside boardslide for that exact reason it feels strange trying to get into it! You have them down no problem, and I love your driveway setup too, its very sick!
Thanks Wes! It's such and uneasy feeling and it comes down to having your upper body ahead of the rail with the board, so I'm told. Just a strange feeling being backwards almost. Still a few away from feeling comfy and not feeling like I'm going to smash my teef. Love my driveway its the default when I can't get to the park, just need some concrete transitions😂 my wife would kill me. Seeing your making some great progress with your ollies! Day 5 looking good!🙌
Nice session. I like how theres no need to push a trick. I've been more like that recently especially after some injuries. Practice, get used to it then theres always tomorrow. 👍🏼🤙🏼
Thanks, bro! I've been watching some RU-vid videos here and there, and I saw your last manual vid. You've come a long way! You seem 10x more comfortable than you were 5-6 months ago-big props! 🙌 It's funny, younger me would totally push tricks until I physically couldn't anymore. These days, though, it's like you said: there's always tomorrow, and there are so many tricks to learn. Some days, I'm content with cruising and doing a couple of powerslides. I baby my knees, so I'm always trying to avoid injuries as best and as fun as possible
Me too. If I’m really struggling, I move on to something else. If it’s just taking forever, but I can feel my thighs/ legs starting to tire, I call it (or try for one more land depending on the trick) There’s always another day to try again
I bought the exact same board a few weeks ago and have skated with it for a week. it is my first and only egg so far. overall while i liked the width compared to a 8.125 that i am used to previously, i found that the tail was incredibly short. way too short for me to use comfortably. takes a lot more force to get a good pop and get good leverage on the board and the tapering felt too intense. even though it resolves to a 8.5 around the trucks. the actual tail and nose end up being a lot smaller because of the taper than throws me off with my timing, again especially that tail. Having said that though, the actual flips and shove its felt amazing on it. Initially i thought i would just not skate egg shapes and just get a 8.5 popsicle but something about that shape at least visually keep attracting me, whether it's the shape, the graphics or both... I might bite the bullet and get a 9.5 symmetrical shellraiser egg and give it another try. if that doesn't feel right then i'll just keep skating popsicles like i always did. cool video, keep skating brother.
Thanks for watching the video! It's funny-we basically have the same approach on this. I wasn’t planning on riding an egg and was going to stick to popsicle boards and maybe a reissue. However, something about the shape drew me in, and the more I ride it, the more I like it. I think it’s the shape, and I also prefer shorter boards; it just feels good for cruising. The Hockey skateboard (popsicle) I have is symmetrical but only 8.125 inches wide. I like the feel of that board as well.
@@OldBrokenSkater agreed! 8.125 was the size i was riding before i discovered the eggs, it's a 8.125 with a 14.25 wheel base and a mellow concave and it feels absolutely great. just pops so well and reacts so well to my feet. like i dont even need to think about it too much and it just follows me. i really think that this is in big part due to the wheelbase and tail shape. i want to find the exact same size but with 8.5 width i think that's the real sweet spot for me. the fried egg has the same wheel base but the tail is sooo much smaller and a few degrees steeper it's not working well for me. but i can feel like i would still love that shape.
Thanks Simon! Forgot how fun and simple driveway sessions can be. I'm definitely keeping the half cab board at home for now...for a split second was thinking of trying it at the rail with stairs. Maybe in 2025...maybe 🫠
Love to see the surf boards just came back from Santa Cruz with my sons unfortunately I can't surf anymore myself I have a fully replaced shoulder and it kills me just to swim. That is the main reason I started skateboarding at 53, couldn't surf anymore might as well skate!! What was that Fakie 50-50 half cab out? Anyway that was sick!
Thanks!! Surfing is my favorite for the most part. The inconsistency of waves here in the northeast makes it hard to get out much. I'm so glad I have skateboarding. Think it was fakie 5050 then almost half cab out 🤣. I like to just try random things to see if they work. That's what's so awesome about skateboarding. I'm just trying things, and hopefully, they stick.
@@OldBrokenSkater yeah I live on the west coast and have been surfing since I was 10, used to skip a lot of school just to hit the swell! I miss it that’s for sure! But hey I got skateboarding and like you said you can get pretty creative with it! I want to do a board slide to manual out I think I can get that! Anyway keep shredding whether it’s the waves or the concrete!
Yea, it's super small compared to some of the other choices. It's definitely fun, though, so far. I'll check that board out and see if they have it one at the local shop. Specs on the internet look like what I'm looking for. Thanks for the recommendation!
Thanks, Nate! Not sure why, but it's way more comfy than rolling regular at it. Seems like anything rolling fakie feels better for some reason. Maybe I'll just skate fakie from now on 😂
Driveway sessions always seem lame in my head, but then they turn fun real quick! Love surfing-it's so much fun and less painful for slams 😂. Bodyboarding is super fun too; used to do this on the days when waves were too big for surfing. Anything ocean is just awesome. I'll keep working to get some videos up; it's a bit challenging trying to film, but I'll figure it out.
@@OldBrokenSkater Funny thing is; we used to bodyboard cause where I'm from the waves were usually small. Good for longboards and sponges. Slams aren't as bad, but I've been ran over and cut by a fin before.. (ouch)
Fin gash is never fun or being run over by a board at all. Here, the waves are either flat completely, almost good, or burley and big. Plus, add the cold water and winter to it, and it gets wild 🤣
