A quick skateboarding mash up of my 4 days working learning how to do backside crooked grinds. Originally intended to make a skateboarding tips video but ended up obsessing over this trick. I was never able to do this skateboarding trick growing up and glad I stuck it out to learn the basics of it and even land a few.
Remember to be patient with yourself, and most importantly, have fun and enjoy your skateboarding journey. Embrace the process of learning at your own pace and own the small victories along the way.

Here's a little secret. If you want to get rid of that squidgy sound that everybody thinks is your bushings? It's actually the pivot cup. Take your trucks apart. Put some vegetable oil on a cuetip and rub that into the pivot cup. It worked fantastic for me.

@OldBrokenSkater 14 дней назад
Ayyyyy duly noted!!! That noise was getting worse. At some point someone suggested waxing the bushings, never heard of that and sounded pretty wild. But the veg oil I could see this working, thanks bro!!!

@@OldBrokenSkater 100% happy to help. I thought it was my bushings too, and also tried oiling them. It just made a damn mess. I tried the veg oil on the pivot cup and imagine my surprise when it friggin worked!

Who here from today? I love all these 40 year olds out here with their ball juices you know, see what they are up to, pleasant to feel their sunshine, stoked 🌞 who doesn’t love the good grandfather? And ball juice is suppose to be softening, like our 🌞, and the heart, pleasure bro, happy. :) thanks RU-vid :)

Hell yeah man, I been working on the same trick! I can see the exact error patterns and fixes you've applied that I've been going through too! Towards the end your front foot was way more towards the heel side of the Board, this one was big for me, it really allowed me to get the pinch and stop having the board slip out.

Thanks!!! Bit of trial and error and approaching from every angle until finally getting it right 😅 But finally getting it and feeling that pinch totally worth it!

This inspires and motivates, need (or would be fun) to spend some time on my crooked grinds too, frontside has been more approachable so far, might try some backside ones too. Need to obsess over some other works in progress too.. 😅😄

Good to hear!! I found the backside to be more comfy in my situation and thats probably because I had the BS noseslides down. Still working on frontside stuff. Soooo many works in progress😂😂😂 luckily keeping myself in check though, only trying them here and there... tre flip, frontside flip, and backside flip..back burner obsessions. Good luck bro!!

Good stuff, man! I feel they key to holding a solid crook is, as with noseslides, having your head and torso fully above the ledge, rather than too much to the side. Basically what you should aim for is NOT to be able to see the side of the ledge when you ollie into it - I know that's scary, because you can miss the ledge and eat shit, but it's actually less bad than having your head too far to the side and then slipping out, which typically results in a full-on face plant.
@OldBrokenSkater
@OldBrokenSkater 15 дней назад
Thank bro!!! 100% agree with this, it was't until I finally started to get closer that I could plant the weight and pinch correctly. Took a little getting use too being uncomfortable but definitely helped. I face planted, hip planted, ass planted pretty good at all of those 😂 got those on lock

for sure your greater life experience allows you to put the "going faster" tip in its proper context- i.e., it doesn't necessarily apply to all (or your) situation. What's nice is, is that now that you have a good idea of how the crooked grind works you can slowly ramp up the speed if you so desire.
@OldBrokenSkater
@OldBrokenSkater 16 дней назад
So true! Having the 'feel' for it is a far greater benefit for ramping it up as I try to get it dialed in. The whole 'go faster' thing should always come with the disclaimer 'results and experiences may vary' 😂

Thanks! It's mildly limiting though, could have been skating at the park and breaking up with ramp skating. Lessoned learned, I'll blame it on the humidity😂 and me not being lazy.

@OldBrokenSkater
@OldBrokenSkater 15 дней назад
Yeah, looking back, a lot of the advice I used to get put me in some painful situations when I was younger. Going fast absolutely has its place; however, nowadays I'm all about understanding how the trick works, having more skate time, and less injury rehab time. Although will need quite a bit of speed for the hard flip down stairs 😂

I never thought I’d ever do a rail trick, ever. Did a BS board the other day. Crooked falls into that category, now you’ve inspired me. I don’t even understand this grind yet 😅
@OldBrokenSkater
@OldBrokenSkater 16 дней назад
After a few transition sessions over the next couple of days, I'm headed to learn some rail tricks. These have been on the back of my mind. For a crook, get it to stall on a curb first or something small. Definitely want to come at it almost parallel, no angle; then you just gotta pinch the wheel until you feel the sweet spot. I went slow because I wanted to find that; when I went fast, there was just too much going on to feel it. I can't 'nollie' out yet, so I chose the easy out, which I think is to fakie out of it. Good luck, man; such a cool trick when it clicks.

people who always say go faster are just bragging that they can do the trick. muscle memory and knowing the pinch and weight distribution are the keys. I like how you already knew to turn your back straight with the ledge and not approach it at an angle. I was struggling for years on this trick coz in my mind its a crooked nose grind so just go at an angle, which is wrong lol
@OldBrokenSkater
@OldBrokenSkater 16 дней назад
This is so spot on!!!! Looking back at the kids who were younger than me at the time (10-15), all the things they practiced and got dialed in were at a snail's pace. I think at one point I watched a video explaining that approaching at a slight angle was best; this was not helpful at all. It may have been for that person, but for me, definitely more parallel and, like you said, back with the ledge. Once I got that, more pinches came, then weight distribution feel. Such a cool feeling when it comes together.
@joshuadavid1804
@joshuadavid1804 12 дней назад
Going fast might help you crook the whole box. But learning to find that lock in spot requires going slow. I would just ollie into a crooked stall over and over before I even tried to slide.
@OldBrokenSkater
@OldBrokenSkater 12 дней назад
Exactly! The slow helped understand the lock in spot. Almost everything I have been doing since starting again has been learning the stall first. Then from there add speed, then when i'm comfy i'll go faster. Such a better way to learn and I think it makes you think about what you're actually doing.
@VintageSk8
@VintageSk8 15 дней назад
You can definitely tell I am a beginner because I thought you landed like 5 or 6 anyway I thought it was all sick hope I get there that trick looks like fun! I also think I want to try that cool nose slide you did!
@OldBrokenSkater
@OldBrokenSkater 15 дней назад
Such a fun trick! While learning, it was a bit painful, but I did enjoy the process of thinking about what I was doing and understanding the different parts that impact the trick. I love doing nose slides; I think that was one of the first tricks I got dialed in when I started learning again. If you try to do the no ollie one like I did, it works best coming into it at a curve, if that makes sense. Instead of going straight on, you start going straight and then curve into it so your weight actually catches on the nose. The path kinda looks like the top half of an 'S'. Wish I could just draw in this text box 😂 Definitely planning on making a tip video for this one; it's a very fun little trick once you figure out the curve and plant your weight.

@OldBrokenSkater 9 часов назад
Yea definitely was a problem in the start, once I figured the pinch out I waxed the shirt out of it and my trucks😂 It was like butter and it all just came together. Hope your getting at it, love that I didn't wait any longer to start again. Its been a blast so far.
@t3r083
@t3r083 16 дней назад
Yeah going faster only helps after you’ve reached a certain point of understanding the trick and muscle memory.
@OldBrokenSkater
@OldBrokenSkater 16 дней назад
Agree, with a lot of these tricks or even in general, I'm more of a 'crawl, walk, run' type. It just makes the whole experience better. Stair and gaps, that's a different story, but I'm not going out and doing that yet....I don't think 😂

What trucks do you skate?
@OldBrokenSkater
@OldBrokenSkater 2 дня назад
Hi! I just recently switched from indy mids to thunder hollow lights 2(148). Definitely a noticeable difference in board feel. Think the indys are 10-15 grams heavier. Biggest reason for switching was even lower profile with thunders.

I didnt go faster, i went slower so i could hold the grind, while grinding half the box. Goofys everywhere.
