Hi David! At about the 3:10 mark here, we see Visio auto-rearrange your arrow in a much less desireable way. You were able to fix it easily here, because the shapes you were using have multiple attachment points. However, I am a database administrator and mainly use Visio for database diagrams, and a constant frustration is the way that Visio will choose a side of a table object to attach the relationship line, and I have never been able to figure out how to manually change that. Do you have any insights on this question?
And I have a second challenge: I would like to have four different org-charts in one visio file. all four charts are based on 4 different tables in excel ( one chart for each department). any idea how to achieve this?
You can create multiple queries using PowerQuery / Data | Get & Transfor Data, then use these for the source of different org charts on separate worksheets
Hi David, nice video-series of visio data vizualiser. Do you know if its possible to change the default colors of different role types in an visio data visualizer org-chart? i was able to change the underlying list of roles based on our internal role structure, but now all shapes have the same blue colorcode. I wasnt able to find editing of colorcodes of the shapes based on role types.
The default colors are just using the page theme. If you want to color by department or anything else, then open in Visio Desktop and select the data row in the Data Graphics panel (with no shapes selected) then tick to apply Data Graphics, and chnage it to Color By Value, then Configure
Hi David, Can the above video be used to update text boxes over 25 pages? I have run into a problem, you have previously described that not all pages get the text updated, sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. I need 5 master boxes that automatically update the text on 25 pages, is it possible?
Possibly the least helpful video on YT. No context, no showing how to get to where you're at, no explanation that Layer Manager isn't even a built in visio function.
Well Brian, that is because it is one of a series of videos that were created as content for my blog and website, see bvisual.net/products/layermanager/ . I hadn't realised that they would be found independently, and of course, you could have opened the comments to find more links.
I'm trying to broaden my development skills by utilizing UML diagrams more often, and I got Visio for a pretty cheap price. This was the first frustration I came across, haha. Thank you for the clear and easy solution!
i am trying to simply link and Excel Cell color(red) to a specific visio shape in drawing. Have read just about everything available but it still does not work. Any good simple reference that doesnt require VBA?
Do you mean that you have Red as a text value in a cell? Or as RGB(255,0,0) ? Or as 2? "Red" will not work, but these other two could. However, you cannot go direct to the FillForegnd using Data Visualizer and need to via a Shape Data row. Have you reviewed my posts : bvisual.net/?s=DATA+Visualizer ?
Beautiful. Just what I needed! But I'm jealous. You had way better tool icons than I have. Version 2312 in M$365? Is there a place to import more of those?
Is there any additional info on how to create this functionality available, specifically the process steps, navigation, and related links on the right side?
Hi David, looks like great stuff and read your articles on the subject. But I'm not getting any audio with this video and looks like there should be some. My volume is on max and speakers/bluetooth working. Is it a silent movie?
I do hope not! The old Visio Web Access control was, but Visio support is in the new web modern part, and a colleague has improved this at unmanagedvisio.com/products/diagram-frame-sharepoint-visio-web-part/
This was very informative and useful! I'm having a weird issue though when I close the Visio file I'm working on, these fields will no longer auto-update. I either have to Ctrl+drag to copy and the fields get updated in the new copy or I have to go to the insert field window again and just hit enter even though the custom formula is still there. Is there any way to auto-updating when I close and then open the file? Regardless, this has already saved me a bunch of time and super helpful!
Hello David - thanks for putting together these great videos on the data visualizer. This to me is an amazing feature that has much potential if Microsoft continues to expand the functionality. A question i have that i am hoping you can help me with. I am using the Data Visualizer template for Basic Flowchart Shapes. I want to use the shape called Custom 4 in my flowchart, and since I will need to provide instructions to my users on how to use this, I will have to tell them to select Custom 4 in the Excel spreadsheet under Shape. Do you know, is there any way to rename this shape in the Visio Stencil ? It seems impossible to me to rename any of the shapes in the standard stencils. And it seems like the only option with the data visualizer is to use the standard stencils and no option to use custom stencils.
But it is easy to atomically link all of the shapes to data, in one action, if you have text or a Shape Data value that can be used to match a column in your data source!
I appreciate this tutorial. I have a question - I want to change the role types to reflect my organization's role types. I was excited to see I could just replace the temporary table1 with a new one. However, I understood that the employee ID had to also have a leader ID associated with it, in order for the chart to populate properly. I don't see an leader ID in your new chart. How did you get the associates to populate beneath their respective leaders without this? Thank you in advance for your help.
Can I ask where you are starting from at the start of this video (are you creating a new SharePoint page or adding a widget perhaps)? Is the customised SharePoint page mentioned something which you have coded yourself? I've added my visio file in a SharePoint page file widget, but I don't seem to get the process steps listed down the right hand side of the Visio Widget as you seem to have. That functionality would be really useful.
Coded by myself and a colleague using TypeScript around learn.microsoft.com/en-us/office/dev/add-ins/reference/overview/visio-javascript-reference-overview
Im planning to create process flow using this visualizer add-in but it is only capped at 50 rows. Once i go past that, it will ask me for a subscription fee. How to bypass that limitation?
Hi David, thanks for this video. Is there a way to hyperlink on page/same page references? For example, to hyperlink on page reference ‘a’ to where ‘a’ is located within the same page, if that makes sense. Thanks!
Using CTRL+K on any shape (or page) to open the Hyperlinks dialog. Don't enter anything in the Address, but hit Browse for the sub-address. There you can enter the name of shape on the selected page. This will enter the string Page Name/Shape Name into the sub-address ... you would think this should work, but security is such that it tends not to ... so an alternative is to add an Actions row or a double-click event with the formula =HYPERLINK("","Page Name/Shape Name") ... that always works! You can get/edit the name of any shape with the Developer tab / Shape Design / Shape Name button
