I am studying school counseling as well. I graduate in spring 2027. This semester I am in group counseling but my prof said that if you see a student/client in public or in the halls to act like you don't know them unless they say something first incase they are around people who don't know about counseling for them. So I am confused about when you go into the classroom with the student
I’m not sure why your professor would suggest that. Saying hello to a student in the hallway doesn’t signal you’re working with them. It means you care about their well being and simply want to greet them 😊
What I don't like as a school counselor is that if I am to be limited with my times I can meet 1:1 and the staff are expecting me to work on a goal woth the student... it makes it hard to build a true relationship. I feel under the gun. I am in the preK and K onky school

The first year is sooo rough! School does not prepare you for the realities of school counseling, especially if you don’t have a teaching background/weren’t previously working in a school setting! Relationships are 100% the most important thing! Some students just need someone to know that someone cares and sees their potential! I’m in year 3 now, and I I still believe relationships are everything!

@@counselingwithmrb I invite students to eat lunch with me, go out during before school or afternoon recess just to check in and chat with students, and I try to remember little facts about each student (like their dogs names or their favorite shows)
I’m currently a teacher but looking to become a counselor. How is your work life balance since switching to a counselor? I am struggling to get this as a teacher and I’ve been doing it for 6 years. also how is the job outlook in general for school counselors?
I have great work life balance because I created it for myself intentionally. There’s a learning curve but I love counseling. I’ll make a video about this topic!👍🏾
