Hi, I'm Gary, a solo traveller from England, who loves exploring the World by land, sea and air. Now you can watch my travel stories from visits to 6 continents.
I'm a huge fans of cruises and cruise ships, so there are plenty of stories from ports of call to share, as well as the fabulous ships from various cruise lines.
On land I want to see the popular landmarks and famous places. I definitely follow the crowds when there's something iconic to be seen. Even so I have been known to go off the beaten path as well. Well, that's what adventure is all about.
If you're a seasoned traveller or taking your first holiday. A land lubber or a cruise fan. On a trip with family and friends, or plucking up the courage to travel solo. Hopefully you'll find some inspiration at Gary Travels...

Hi Gary, great video thank you for sharing! We are doing a cruise on the Discovery in a few weeks time from Marmaris (cannot wait lol) question, could you disembark to have a look round Marmaris before the ship sailed at midnight?
@@ropo9 glad you enjoyed it. Yes - you could get back off, but have to take your passport with you again. People on for 2 weeks got a landing card in the middle week so they didn’t need their passport apparently. Hope you have a great time!!
@@gary_travels Oh ok that’s good to know, I thought that might be the case when you said you got the exit stamp at the cruise port, but glad you can go back ashore as it looks a nice town and be nice to explore before the ship sails.
@@ropo9 I didn’t get off, but the Cruise News says it’s around a 20 minute walk to the centre. Bear in mind you might not arrive until mid afternoon and muster drill is at 7pm. All onboard was 11.30pm for our cruise
Excellent video, loved the tour you did which took you out of the city, how nice to be in the real Greece, soaking up the incredible history and no crowds. 😍
@@cruisefraterpoultons yes, some people weren’t impressed, but I quite specifically chose this itinerary because it was going to unusual places I had never been to before.
Ancona is a delightful place .. an industrial port, a shipyard that has built all of the Viking Ocean cruises vessels (as well as the Regent cruise line ships) and a fascinating town centre with a lot of history, and where they seem to have turned a lot of churches into cafes, bars and night clubs.
Trieste was the principle port for the Austro-Hungarian empire, hence some of the official architecture is more Vienna than Venice, but also the reason why the statue of Maximilian was that in July of 1857, Maximilian married Princess Charlotte, the daughter of Leopold I of Belgium, and together they moved to Trieste. Since they were both fond of nature and the sea, the royal couple decided to build a wonderful castle on the Grignano promontory as their home. Also Trieste is the major port for coffee importation into mainland Europe.
Loved watching the series Gary, it’s been packed full with beautiful destinations. Not done a New England cruise before but definitely worth doing after watching your adventures. Loved your New York City break, we’ve been a few times but not since 9/11 - so much to see. A quick question on how you got 3 vertical videos on the screen at the same time, looked good but is it easy to do?
The vertical videos are just portrait style from my phone. In Clipchamp you just stack the video feeds on top of each other in the same time section, but then align them to left, right and centre so they play at the same time and you can see them all. Pretty easy if I can do it 🤣
@@gary_travels brilliant thanks for that advice, we’ve got loads of vertical videos before we realised that RU-vid likes horizontal but thought you’d done that really well and is a good way of filling the space. We use CapCut but I’m sure they have the same functionality somewhere (hopefully in the free version) 👏
@@gary_travels what’s quite interesting is we have done quite a few of those destinations separately but saw completely different things from your visit, just shows there is so much to see in these places.
Hi Gary, loving your videos, never cruised yet, so wanting too next summer. What are in your opinion the top reasons to sail Marella as they seem to be where we are thinking.
Thanks for watching 😀 I’ve sailed with lots of cruise lines and always choose the itinerary first and then that often picks the ship. For me Marella is fun, they went to new places (for me) this year and the entertainment is just my thing. Plus it’s very British. You pay a bit more but it’s all inclusive too. In comparison P&O are cheaper, do better formal nights, but less good entertainment in my opinion. I have friends who only sail with them. I pick Princess for amazing itineraries, Celebrity for the food (😋!!) and Royal Caribbean because it’s nice to experience the World with international passengers, not just as a Brit abroad, and they’re great fun too. But I keep going back to Marella, so that I guess is a recommendation in itself. Hope that helps a bit.
@@rebeccataylor3347 What a great excuse to go on a cruise to see him perform!!! I always go to the shows. Think Hollywoodland in the next episode was my favourite!
@@beereed I have very rarely suffered from motion sickness. Once when it was very rough and once when it wasn’t rough enough and my body felt it but my brain couldn’t quite work out why 🙄 Nowadays you often don’t feel the ships moving at all. I tend to sway more on land afterwards once I’ve got used to the ship 😆
I think the Marella ships are great for solos. I didn’t join in so much on this one, but met a fab group of solos on the last one. Sure you’ll have a fab time.
We will be in Peggy's cove one week from tomorrow and have booked a similar excursion. We will be in port for 9 hours so we hope to add in the Fairview Lawn Cemetary and Maritime Museum as I am deep in the story of the Titanic thanks to RU-vid. This is such a great series and the first time I watched this video, we booked the excursion. Love your videos.
Loved watching all the Quebec videos, what a beautiful city and the boardwalk and Chateau Frontenac are very picturesque places. Definitely want to visit there after watching this.
Great video, looks so different in the summer and very lovely. We’ve been before in February and it’s -15 and you can ice skate on the river and tube down the hill in the big park and ski. Looking forward to seeing the other episodes 👏
Trieste is definitely a hidden gem, spectacular architecture and love it when you walk off the ship and you are right in amongst it all. Another great episode Gary 👏😍
It was a good cabin - the mirrors made it feel really spacious. Check out my new video on Sunday - that’s a window cabin on Marella Discovery - a bit smaller, but nice in other ways.
I’m English, and I don’t speak French very well, but if you watch some of my Montreal & Quebec videos you’ll see I did try a little bit and I bought my bus ticket to Montmorency entirely in French 😀 But also everyone spoke English and that’s just easy!
Actually I’m just editing my next cruise video for Marella Discovery - for that I had the option of a single outside with a window, so I booked that, but again I just took the cabin they picked for me.
He’s from the North of England and so am I. 😮 I live in the town of Jonquière which is the third of the three towns making up the Ville de Saguenay besides Chicoutimi and La Baie -pronounced Bay. 😊
Hello to a fellow Northerner! I didn’t make it as far as Jonquiere - so don’t know how to pronounce that one either 😆. This is why I love travelling (and sharing my travels) because you learn so much.
I lived in China for 5 yrs. They have an 80K network of 305 km/hr HSR. Tracks are smooth, only motion is forward with smooth braking and acceleration. Mayor of Quebec City is asking for TGV to TO-I think it should go further to Chicago. Reg. track has you moving in 6 directions simultaneously causing motion sickness.
@@gary_travels Damn the cost, full speed ahead! France is famous for the TGV! Brexit was dumb and has kept Britain poor. Those 44 tax cuts for the uber rich didn't help either. Vancouver's subway cost 6.5X more than bus but it's 100X better. It goes over and above traffic. Only a helicopter would be faster.
@@BabsHooper Fantastic - have a great time!! My top tip is go and join in - there will be an invite to a solos meet up - we had a fab group on ME2 - I’m on Discovery now and there were 17 solos at the meet up - all but 2 ladies. But there are 67 in total - travelling with other friends or families, so if the group is not for you chat to anyone!! I’ve made new friends already and it’s only day 2.
@@sylvainb2366 That’s interesting- I try and get my pronunciation right in (to me) foreign sounding places, but I don’t know that I actually heard anyone say it out loud to correct me. So thanks for that info 😀
Was on the Explorer 2 in 2022 in cabin 8031 ,going back on again in October doing the Adriatic affair . Watching your videos has got me so ready to go . Looks like you had a blast 🍺👍🎉 Just a shame that Tui solo prices are so expensive !
Yes - the solo prices are a lot, but being all inclusive helps at least. I think it’s worth paying for the entertainment and itineraries. The Adriatic is full of great places - enjoy your countdown 😎
