It is a great album for sure but... Not the best Steely Dan album IMO. Royal Scam and Countdown to Ecstacy are my personal favs. Gaucho is very underrated though.
My Top 10: 1. Aja 2. Babylon Sisters 3. Kid Charlamagne 4. Don't Take Me Alive 5. Your Gold Teeth (Pt.2) 6. Josie 7. Home At Last 8. Green Earrings 8. Do It Again 9. Night By Night 10. FM
This list is nonsensical, even considering the subjective nature of music. Look how many tracks are ranked lower than Dog Eat Dog. Might as well be random order 😂
Hard to do a steely dan list as all of the songs are so good everyone has there own favorites Gaucho is my most played album I wish second arrangement and kulee baba had made the cut though instead of babylon sisters and my rival
13:40 a rando is something like an arrangement from a certain type of melody or something. Basically here it represents a lyric from an old song from a few centuries ago. Ghana is/was a third world country, mostly due to the fact that they were a non-aligned country during the Cold War. Then the Italian lyric is saying: “beginning of the era of the third world” or something. The lyric is in Italian because randos were traditionally Italian. So the singer is saying that in response to the man’s cries he is calling him a third world man.
Interesting review about the songs on Gaucho. I was always perplexed by the critics' harsh treatment of it. To me Glamour Profession would be among their top 3 songs. My opinion is that, although not technically Steely Dan "The Nightfly" is superior to Gaucho in songwriting expertise and in production quality.
Dingus is inappropriate. Dinghead is more appropriate. And the best Steely Dan album is likely AJA, but it is STILL up for grabs as far as the band is concerned. Gaucho is a good album, but it is surpassed by various releases in the the estimate of the fans.
And no matter how you explain it away, uselessly, in the narration, you cannot convince ANY one what you are saying may have ANY remote resemblance to the actual truth.
It's taking me forever to get through this, as I'm listening to the songs as we go. :) I also get a Jack Stratton vibe from the commentary. That's meant to be a good thing. I'm almost through Two Against Nature as I type this comment. Really enjoying the journey!
Thank you so much for your hard work putting this together. It is fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done! I’ve been looking for something like this for a long long time. I’m just too fucking lazy to do that amount of research!
i adore so much that there is an entire video dedicated to this topic. absolutely top nerd trivia - indelibly stamped has been on replay for the last week for me
Thanks so much for this ! Loved this band since the 70s so it was good to relive a few good memories- tho I was surprised that the late great Carl Wilson didn’t get a mention for his vocal contributions to Red Lake… (or did I miss it ?)
Much, much thanks for this, mate. Very well done. I've been a huge fan ever since the first album came out here in the States. Great memories cruising in college with that tape and accompanying party materials. I do love every one of them, stylistic changes and all. I don't necessarily agree with all of your opinions concerning a few of the songs (especially on the Polydor releases), but being a synth geek I find those sonic textures do help elevate what I felt were the more mundane lyrics. ;-) At least for the first three Columbia albums, Lake was what the Eagles could have become with better songwriting. How sad that the post-JHH band felt it worthwhile to cover Henley. But "You Know How I Feel" does rise from the depths of most of the rest of The Blast Of Silence, IMO. If there is indeed new Lake music coming out as mentioned in these comments, that would be beyond awesome. Lake's music will remain timeless and relevant forever.
