I've been riding freight trains since 1989 and have since ridden over 2,700,000 of steel rails in 49 USA states, eight provinces of Canada and 14 states in Mexico. I spent my first 31 years homeless riding trains then last year I had to get a small apartment because of medical issues. It's very hard having walls and a roof because I prefer to be outside. I still stay gone riding more than I stay in the little apartment. Doing my best after getting hit by a car December 13 and ran over by a train October 2017. Hand and arm healed quite well! I now have a merchandise website at the below link:
Poor guy, as much as I loved all his videos, sometimes it just looked like he was pushing himself way harder than he should. On the other hand, he was far better organized and scientific about catching trains than any other hobo I see. Thanks to all the people that were nice to him and helped him. ❤ This makes me sad.
Awe 😊🌸❤️ He is all around us in spirit. He spawned a rival of interest in America’s railroads & a flurry of Amtrak travel, foregoing airlines, us included. Wouldn’t have ever had the courage without him. Ride on, Shoestring Mark, and God bless

Yo bro I to am a train lover always have been a train buff, unfortunately hear in land down under - Australia we aren't allowed to trespass on any track or in fact in any state of Australia - as long as you know what you are doing brother who cares what others think or say - I always say 'risk it for the biscuit' oh yeah I don't know if you own or have one try getting a UHF police scanner CB Radio they do come in handy 'ears dropping' lolz. It maybe ideal for you're traveling.
Grew up near a railroad. Something about a train going by off in the distance. Watching it go westbound, eastbound. Can guess fairly well if its got a DPU most times now. Along with Marks vast knowledge of trains, rail systems, sure miss ya Mark Nichols! RIP Brother 🙏🇺🇸🗽free spirit🕊️
I would have loved, I mean loved to run in this dude!!! Wish I could go looking for him now but he on that “Westbound” I got to at least head out to Chicago from Indianapolis and then come back on different train! RIP
I’ll forever enjoy your spirit and vitality through your rail hopping experiences. I shall never forget the freedom you demanded and the “full of life” from which you lived. And I’ll always say you lived! Soar through those heavenly gates and ride those golden rails forever into that heavenly peace. In memory of “Hobo Shoestring.”

My wife died of ALS, I have had a bit of a problem staying sane since. Mark has been dead since earlier this year. I benge watch his videos to help me put both feet on the ground every day. He really didn't realize the help he was doing people.
