I learned this evening that your no longer with us. I really enjoyed following your RU-vid page and all the features you have been on and shared with all of us. Every Time i logged in id check to see if you made another new video. I'm going miss that.. I'm sad inside. may we meet someday in the sky above, Good by Shoestring
I put Mark's videos on for years when going on walks by myself or when just laying down to relax. He was just a calming individual. Ive been on youtube since the beginning and have seen dozens of my absolute favorite RU-vidrs pass. Its inevitable but still sad. I continue to watch the content of all my favorites even after they pass on to the next. I do not think that death of the body means death of the soul.
He spawned a rival of interest in America’s railroads & a flurry of Amtrak travel, foregoing airlines, us included. Wouldn’t have ever had the courage without him. Ride on, Shoestring Mark, and God bless
RIP Shoestring, you leave behind SOOO many people who loved watching and following your travel adventures. I am so proud to have had contact with you through the videos that you made. May all of your adventures now be on the rails of gold.
Fortunate to see and experience marks videos. His calmness in solitude made me feel better about life, hope in tomorrow to carry on. Thanks mark for your positiveness, understanding silent strength. Miss you brother, see you on the west bound someday! Take care and God bless🙏👑🇺🇸🫡
Here I am at home with the heat cranked up and making sure my sherpa blanket is wrapped around me for max comfort, while Shoestring is out there like this. Respect.
Yes I have been waiting for a video from you. Going to be a good night tonight. Too cold outside 1 degree tonight in Fort Wayne Indiana. Stay safe and stay warm.
Going to be 95 f today in Minyip Victoria Australia today. I grew up in Michigan I sure miss the snow. Christmas is still weird sweating, wearing shorts and a t-shirt trying to stay in the A/C. Been almost 20 years here now.
i sort of stumbled across your RU-vid channel it made me remember some stories my dad told me about him riding the rails when he was in his teens with a couple of his friends, I'm 68 years old now, so that was a while back. He was 17 when he hoped a train in Iowa and started his way to the west coast to join the Merchant Marines. My dad had adventure after adventure during his life. He wasn't afraid of anything. I hope to see more of your videos.
Those 2 hanks of cord are to lift the bug net off of you. There are some loops on the bug net to run them though. If you don't need the bug net flip your hammock up side down and ii wont hes with you. A goo trick is to flip the hammock up side down and slip your pad between the bug net and the top of the Hammock. Welcome to to the hammock fraternity . :)
Great advice. He’d likely be warmer if he could create an underlayment underneath with the sleeping bag as well. Ive used those light weight silver emergency blankets in a pinch as well top and bottom.
I'm glad that you got over your latest round of health issues. I now know what that's all about, I got diagnosed with cancer back in June and between the constant blood lab draws, CAT Scans, MRIs and PET Scans, rounds of chemo and the things that the chemo did to me, its been a rough seven months now. I'm done with chemo for now but now I'm starting radiation treatments. I've moved into an assisted living place and it seems thst about all I do is sleep most of the time. I'm glad to see that you are now in good enough condition to getting back out on the rails. For me, I'm just hoping I can get out in the boat again to fish and do some boat camping this year. I hope that it wasn't too cold for you during this winter storm this past week. Be safe and may God protect you Shoestring! Take care!
Greetings Hobo Shoestring! it is so good to see you camping out, and in a nice little cedar grove in the snow. Your Ghillie suit is superb camo, especially with a few random local leaves stuck to it. Makes me wonder how many guys are running around in those out in the woods...and and no one the wiser! I liked the footage of the train passing in the dark, your headlamp illuminating the reflectors on the cars, the snow falling in giant flakes! Trains look magical at night. I like the way it feels when a train passes, and you are standing under an overpass, where the sound waves are really concentrated. You can feel the power of the engines vibrate your bones. G-d bless you, I hope you have another wonderful rail experience! :D
Woo-Hoo!!! Mark on the Move! Glad to see you back out on the rails, Brother Shoestring. And loving the Gillie suit. The VA just ran me through about a good 60 days of various appointments so I feel ya. Stay warm and stay safe out there! Here's to a great 2024! -Sarge
Your beard is getting white. Soon you’ll be just like the rest of us. Enjoy your stories. You should write a book with everything you’ve experienced. As far as the singing, “ Shoestring “ keep your day job. 😂 Thanks for sharing.

Hi Shoestring! I am so glad to see you back out and riding again. I hope you had a nice holiday season and that you're feeling good. I sent you a few small things (travel utensils and some magnifying LED glasses) to aid you in your travels. Stay safe and warm. Thank you for taking us a long on all your adventures!
I remember seeing him post this but didn't have time to watch it. If I am remembering correctly, this was THE weekend that it got SOOOOO cold everywhere for the most part LOL I am in Southeastern Kentucky. I'm about 45 minutes from Tennessee state line. I think we were snowed under this weekend, and it got like wind chill 10 below with temp 4 below. I had my heat on high, sitting in my house and I damn near froze to de@th!!! And this nut was outside!!!??? LOL I actually remember thinking I bet he's not riding trains this weekend as cold as it was. But I guess he was. Going to miss his videos. I used to look forward to him posting. RIP Mark
thats a good hammock! i dont know the brand but i recognize it as the one i got my son a few YEARS ago... 2020 i think. He put it up in the backyard between two mulberry trees and never took it down. it's still holding up strong. only issue at all is the fly net... sometimes, when not in use, a bumble bee would get wound up in it and chew its way out. they aren't supposed to be left out in the elements like this because of obvious reasons, but i gotta say i'm impressed with the durability.
God, i miss him already, i didnt know anything happened until i had gone through youtube shorts and found the RIP hobo shoestring, my heart hurts knowing hes gone, I was afraid this would happen after hobo stobes passing. Rest well shoestring
Brother, glad to see that you are back where you are most comfortable. You are looking strong as ever and you can hear the excitement in your voice. looking forward to seeing the next video, be safe, stay warm and remember, "Drink Water"
You are a trooper camping out like that and the legend continues. You are the real deal Sir Shoestring. Can't wait to see the train you get on this trip. Stay warm and safe brother..
Hi, Shoestring!!! And Happy 2024!!! I just saw this video of a camper using a hammock and attaching a sleeping bag over it. Really clever and another layer of warmth! Stay safe out there, young man. I wish ya all the best!!! 😊
Hey buddy, it is been so great watching you over the years. I am so glad you’re back our arms are forever wrapped around you here in Kennewick Washington Washington state on the mighty Columbia river.
Good to see you're doing good in good spirits in this cold weather ShoeString my friend! Also great to see that you're awesome ShoeString Army got you all geared up for the season!! Keep on Rollin brother! ✌️
One of my favorite channels to view. Just something about SS voice captivates me. I’m gonna miss you Shoestring. I hope to see you again one day. RIP ol buddy.
Shoestring is on the rails and all is right with the world…welcome back home Mark…if you ever roll through central PA you always have a friendly stop on your journeys…
Hobo, thanks for showing me what a gilley suit is, I've heard a lot of people talk about it, this is the first time I've seen one and you're wearing it. You're an inspiration to me, I really enjoy your zest for life! Be careful out there and stay warm and safe shoestring!
I once slept in a hammock at the lake, and in the middle of the night I was awakened by what sounded like human foot steps that kept getting closer and closer. Being pitch dark I couldn't see anything. When whatever it was that finally approached me, it just stopped like it was just standing there. I thought it best to just lay still and not draw attention because it was a pain in the butt to try to get out of that hammock real fast to confront what ever it was (hammock was a zipped in with top). Finally whatever it was just walked away. I went back and slept in the car with the doors locked the rest of the night. 😉😉
Whatever it was I heard dogs barking earlier like they were following it coming down the road, so think nothing of it I went back to sleep only to be awakened later with those foot steps. @@edwardsharpe6234
A Bogart or Boogin (as I was told they are called in Dorset) was trouping. I take it the thing felt scary. It was brave that you stayed, but wise that you got in the car. Sometimes I think these beings that approach and give us a bit of a weird turn are saying: "see 'ere. We're about our business tonight and see you stay well out of our way'! And if you do so, no harm comes to you.
My son does survival camps once a year for scouts. He uses a tarp between two trees as his shelter. I had him take a couple ratchet straps to go between the trees and hang the tarp over..
Shoestring. I have really enjoyed watching your videos recently. I am a 3rd generation railroader and attorney representing railroad employees for years. I worked as a RR locomotive machinist for 10 yrs and am a certified conductor and engineer. I have handled cases ranging from trespasser cases to RR employee injuries and labor disputes always on behalf of the workers. I’ve ridden many locomotives and trains both as an employee and attorney it would be great to say hello sometimes. Good luck and thank you.
