Every Frame a Painting was a series of video essays about film form, made from April 2014 to September 2016, by Taylor Ramos and Tony Zhou.
We officially announced the end of the channel in December 2017. Nothing sinister, we just felt it was time. This post explains it all: medium.com/@tonyszhou/postmortem-1b338537fabc
Thank you all for your years watching and supporting! See you around, folks.
it's like comparing classical music with electronic music, both are equally hard to create in their own right and they both got their place in the culture.
While many Jackie Chan films have bad stories, his stunt work and fight scenes are top of the class. And I refused to watch many recent American kung fu movies or fight scenes. I am one of the few who refused to watch Matrix and Kill Bill, because, they don't know what they are doing.
a man, a legend, a myth and an institution. We teach Buster Keaton in our filmmaking courses and trust me, every time I watch his movie I learn something new, I discover something new. One of the greatest of all times.
Fantistic,Excellent!! Growing up watching the WB and Chuck Jones cartoons. Now watching your story makes total sense why this is timeless. I'd watch them with my kids and the simplicity was easy for them to relate to. Great work, i'm passing this along to a artist friend of mine.
Ah. Yes. How to forget the time Jackie chan killed Jesus with a death claw to the holy nuts.

I still miss the days of Vancouver being a sleepy little logging town before It was destroyed by it's own "Sucess" 😢

There was a short-lived tv series called studio 60 on the sunset strip and Bradley Whitford was discussing filming locations and someone suggested Vancouver and he said "We can't film in Vancouver, it doesn't even look like Vancouver, it's more like Boston California....." lol
Its not surprising to see Danny Elfman, his theme at the beginning of Spiderman is the only thing I can remember. Those strings and horns eere pretty good but its true I can't remember the melody exactly
I watched The General ysterday, its in the public domain. I'm going to watch is again as soon as i have the time. Its not just the stunts, I feel like i can relate to him.
Something odd about those Avengers shots is how big everything is. Why does the shot need to be so wide, and why must they be in a huge room? Scenes are generally a lot more effective if the room is only as big as it needs to be. For example, Pulp Fiction has a lot of scenes with Vince and Jules talking. They're in a car, they're sitting across at a table, they're in a hallway. It's close and personal so you can kinda feel the energy of the conversation. Having the same conversation in a giant room or in an open field with a wide shot just wouldn't feel right. It's like someone said "we should put the avengers in a huge room so we can do more CGI!" If the purpose of the scene is a bunch of super hero CGI stuff, then yeah go ahead and make a huge scene of that. If you're trying to have a conversation, cut all that shit out and focus on the characters.
Alfred Hitchcock noted something very important many decades ago - most movies are just people talking. You are seeing pictures of people talking, so what's the point of the picture? The picture itself should be part of the art. An excellent example of visual storytelling is the intro to Rear Window. The camera pans over news articles that tell you about a guy crashing a car, who he is, what his job is, then it pans over to that guy in a wheelchair. Without saying any words, you know what is going on. In your example of how to communicate travel, the single best example was Snatch. The guy says he's going to Antwerp, he slams the phone down, flash scene of a taxi, flash airplane, flash him showing up, "shut up and sit down you bald fat fuck". It's so jarring but it's very clear he's in a different location.
