This song describes the heartbreak I felt letting go of my ex, knowing one of my friends was waiting in the wings who I knew was a much better match for her than me. The connection her and I had was fierce, but we were so different in key areas. She tried to get back with me a few times, and I knew I was going to lose her. It was so hard to say no. But I loved her so much that I recognized he would make her happier than I could, and I would not ultimately be happy with her long term. I still love her to this day, and feel intense protection over her when I think of her. It’s odd to love someone so deeply that you choose to let them go. One of the less selfish things I’ve done in life.
