I'm lara Butler and our family was a wine steward and due to the frequency of poisonings it was a very trusted position, due to the loyalty and unmovable defication to the crown that my ancestors displaye 7:03 d
My apologies for not replying here. I was in Ireland for a few weeks. This is so interesting. When you say your family was a wine steward, do you mean someone in your family was one?
@@RachelAGaffney I'm gonna play it all by ear. I've got a friend in Dublin who I'm meeting up with first then we'll hit the road to Limerick around the 24 of May of this year.
Borris village developed to house the people who worked in Borris House. Lady Hariette from the house, taught the local ladies how to make Borris Lace so they could earn some money during the hard times, which has been revived by the local ladies group. Biannually there is a Poets Festival in Borris House.
@@RachelAGaffney I will never forget my first time on the water. Now I started my granddaughter out and at 22 months her first fish was a Rainbow. When she was born I got her lifetime fishing and hunting licenses for her state. I can talk fishing for hours 😉 and glad to hear you still with. You are in a beautiful part of the world👍
I spent many happy years there as a boarder. I knew it was special even then. Boarders from all over the world and even whole families. Will never forget my time there.

Same - first thing I do with a new book is smell it. When a child I was thrilled to get books from Santa - so I would know how Santa’s Workshop smelled like of course;)
I am Wendy Elizabeth Butler , my grandparents were Thomas Butler and Ellen Murphy .. We were always told that Butler referred to the french Bottelier , server of wine (sorry if the spelling is wrong ) My grandfather Thomas Butler was born in 1900 on the estate of Castle Fogarty , Ballycahill Tipperary , My grandmothers family hailed from Wexford but settled in Shellumsrath Kilkenny .. both families had worked at Norelands and Mount Juliet ... I have a lovely old photo of my great uncle Tom Murphy with The Tetrarch ... a very well known race horse owned by Major McCalmont ... . A fascinating history thanks for sharing
Wendy, it is really lovely to meet you. Firstly, thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. What a fascinating background you have. The Butler family name goes back to Theobald Fitzwalter, an Anglo Norman who arrived in Ireland in the 12th century. He was awarded the hereditary office of 'Chief Butler' of Ireland' or "Boteillier". The French word "Boutillier" comes from "Boutellier" (different spelling) which means, someone in charge of the wine cellar. I would think they are connected but I would have to leave this to the experts but would love to know more. Lovely to mee you. Oh and Mount Juliet Estate is simply beautiful.
@@RachelAGaffney Thank you so much for replying Rachel , and also for the further history information . All so fascinating .. Before lockdown , I was due to visit Mount Juliet and Norelands stud .. and also Tipperary but all had to be cancelled due to the UK travel restrictions , Hopefully next year things will be different and I can visit ... I was invited by someone at The Norelands Stud to a personal tour and I had also wanted to give them a large framed copy of The Tetrarch with my Great Uncle Tom Murphy (the horse is buried there ) for their stables ... I also wanted to show them a copy of my grandparents marriage cert as my grandmother Ellen Murphy gave her current address as Norelands , so she must have been working there at the time ... There has always been a strong connection with equines within our family .. Last year I posted the old photo of my Great Uncle Thomas Murphy on a facebook page Kilkenny Down Memory Lane I think it was and a distant relative got in touch with me .. so that was really lovely ... when Great Uncle Tom was in his seventies he emigrated to Canada ... he died there in 2004 aged 104 !!! and she sent me the pics of him on his 100th birthday .. he looked so well ! and had hardly changed since I last saw him in the late 1970.s ... I do feel it is important to keep Irish history alive .. Our Butler surname was always impressed upon us as being a name to be proud of ... Very Best Regards Wendy
@@wendy5871 Absolutely fascinating. Of course, 'The Tetrarch' is a well known and indeed famous thoroughbred racehorse. What a fabulous family connection. Are you in Canada or was that just your great uncle? This is why I simply love what I do. I get meet and hear from people like yourself. I'm heading over there on Sept 22 for a month and will be hosting a Live Feed from Cork and Connemara for subscribers of the Wall Street Journal. I will be posting photos and videos on my Instagram and Facebook pages too if you care to follow along.

@@wendy5871 Derbyshire. Beautiful part of the country, Peak District ! I used to work for Copthorne Hotels and later Thistle Hotels so I spent a lot of time in that part of the country.
Enjoyable show Rachel. Good interview Neven. I would not have known about Irish Rosti nor potato boxty had i not been learning more and more about Ireland, as i have recently. : )
The goblets associated with the Coronation Banquet went to the Chief Butler. I descend from the Payne’s who were heirs of Ralph Butler in 1333. This record names Nicholas Payne heir, and his son, John PAYNE was Pincerna Regis till his death in 1402. New fan BTW. Just found this video!
Patrick, that is so wonderful to hear. I love meeting people with all these family stories. Have you seen the comment below from Jesse Fehrer-Butler? You both have great stories. Thank you so much fro taking the time to watch and comment.
@@RachelAGaffney thank you. I wish I had time to relate the story behind the Ellesmere CHAUCER passing from the family to the DRURY’s in 1568, that connection back to John ‘Pincerna’ who of course had purchased wine from the Chaucer’s and was succeeded by Chaucer’s son, Thomas. Chaucer and the Duke both married daughters of PAYN de ROET- and I now have reason to believe all of this was no coincidence as I have just connected John Payn’s family with the better known PAYNELS in Leicestershire! Proving that all of those medieval Norman “PAGANS” (Payne in all its forms in Latin is PAGANUS) running around were in many cases of the same early PAYNEL family. I hope to get back to the UK for an extended visit with renewed focus on Ireland with this new knowledge as that is where I will find my ancestor. Having recently taken an early retirement I now have the time if I wish. I now seem to know a person with some experience in this area! I have not read the comments be will certainly make time to do so.
Really enjoyed your episode about Kilkenny and the Mount Juliet Estate. I currently live on the Slane Castle Demesne and hope to move to Mount Juliet in the near future... you are an amazing embassador for all the wonderful things about Eireann, look forward to watching more... Hello from Dallas. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. That is very kind of you. I am currently working on 2 new episodes, Dressing the First Lady on Feb 16 and St Patrick's Centre a week later. I remember Slane very well. I vividly remember going to see David Bowie in 1987 ! I also love County Louth, I stay in Termonfeckin when I go over there. So lovely to meet you. Rachel
My sincere apologies for a late reply. It's absolutely fascinating to me, to see just how far and wide the Diaspora are. I sincerely hope you can visit Kilkenny sometime. It's well worth a visit. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Hello Dennis. Apologies for the tardy reply. Yes, Cavan and Sligo are historically the Counties where the name Gaffney originates from. I, myself am from Cork, but my roots go back to Sligo. How about yourself?
