GM guys! Wow, youve had a heck of a summer already! congrats on your promotion Bo, temporary or not, it will be great to have some additional income considering the issue with wynns summer job. Ugh, i hate when the employer tries to make it seem like the job is something different than it really is, they do that bc they know no one wants to do D2D sales! I hope u can get on with some summer work at your school wynn!
Keep your spirits up! I was so excited to pay off my car this month with extra $$ that had come our way (mission accomplished!) Then my husband bush hogged his phone 😢 and a couple other things came up. Powering through. Because of budgeting, I am able to take care of the other things without having to touch our savings. Congratulations on the jobs.
This is y’all’s journey and what works for you , works for you. I’ve been married for 38 years now and it’s a partnership. For us it has always been not mine, not his, but ours in all things. And girl, you are way more in depth than I ever thought to be.
38 years, wow! That's awesome! I'm sure things will feel more joint for us once the kids are adults. For now, it's hard to think like that when we're not married yet and the kids are with their mom half the week. I (Beau) only even met them 2 years ago, so this is a huge adjustment for all of us.
I’m salary but my husband isn’t. I guesstimate (pretty much like you have been doing) but I am one month ahead. So, once a month I put any extra in the savings. I believe @ayaplans budgets her boyfriend’s pay or at least part of it.
You guys are doing great rolling with the punches life is giving you. I have been trying to get a month ahead in my checking account as well. It’s not easy but I’m not giving up. I watch another teacher who budgets and she gets summers off too. She decided she wanted to be work optional for summer so she calculated how much money she would need over summer break and divided it by how many paychecks she gets while she’s working. At the end of the school year she has enough saved so she doesn’t have to work summers unless she wants to. It’s something to think about. It might work once you get a month ahead and school is back in session.
Thanks so much. That's a great idea! Even if he never used that fund, it would take a lot of pressure off. Last year, I ended up paying the rent all summer and we can't do that every year since it's more than half my pay. Having a dedicated summer fund would change everything. Thanks for sharing!💜
There are hidden long term costs to health from cutting spending on food and meals. I think we start buying clothing and anything that isn’t a perishable item on a replacement basis. We check the flyers in advance and go to the mall/supermarket with a shopping list and get what’s on the list only. Buy healthy. If it’s high in sugar, think twice. We decrease the frequency of going out to eat but increase the quality (and price) of food we eat in restaurants. Fast food and anything high in oil and fats are a no go. Dates become a walk around the neighborhood instead of watching TV or going to the mall. I think we think more seriously about building this RU-vid channel as an additional source of income which implies learning good video structures and editing. Also, is that an Amazon Prime subscription?? Why do you have that?
You make really great points! When we cut groceries, the unhealthy snacks are cut first. Part of our problem is we are both overweight, so we need to eat less anyway. We tried shopping sales, but a lot of it ended up expiring before we ate it. Clothing is already only bought when items get holes in them. Win especially wears holes in his clothes/shoes very quickly. I can't remember which video it was, but a while back I actually showed a pair of his shoes that he had worn all the way through the sole. He does that every 3-4 months and he wears EEEE width shoes, so they aren't very easy to find affordably. It's rough. We have Amazon Prime because we price compare with Amazon whenever we're buying things for the house. Also, Win doesn't drive so it can be difficult to do all our shopping in person. We'll adjust where we can and give your ideas some serious thought.💜
We don't count saving as spending because we reallocate funds sometimes. For example, I (Beau) used part of my emergency fund to pay down Win's debt (investment) one time and a medical bill (need) another time. The numbers would be off if I originally said all emergency savings are for needs. Same with if we changed the purpose of one of our savings categories. That money can always be moved around. It doesn't necessarily have to be spent on what we originally saved it for. I'd rather my actual spending be accurate so I can reflect and adjust based on what's leaving our accounts.
I totally agree with him, that nothing is a one size fits all, but you basically spend the first half of the video saying that you're going to do parts your own easy because you disagree. You need to do it so that you understand it and then make changes to make it work for you.
We understand his process, took the course twice, and have spoken with him personally. His course includes various scenarios for how to change things around as needed. We're following most of his advice, just tweaking where it makes sense to us. Feel free to follow along and watch our progress.💜
I just took the Hammer Audit Score. Got a 9.0. I don’t own any investment property and we still have about 14 months left to pay off our mortgage (final debt). There is a gap in the score though. On investing, it only asks if you have up to 1x your annual salary invested. That’s the “best” score. I have about 15x my salary invested. I feel that should take up some slack off the investment property. I’m not really looking to be a landlord.
Thanks for sharing this. I watch Caleb more for the entertainment value, but have been curious about the quality of the course too, as I have recommended it (without really knowing if it was good or nor - with that caveat, of course) to a few people. So good to know!! 😊
Definitely 50-30-20 doesn't apply to everyone, I'm more 40-10-50. Got 9 on his financial quiz. I definitely think a big goal in personal finance is getting to the point where I didn't need a budget - not to allow myself to spend frivolously, but more so because I've become used to a lifestyle that's financially sound. Every paycheck, I allocate an amount towards spending and an amount towards saving/investing and that's it - and it actually frees up a lot of time for me to pursue other things! Best of luck on your financial journeys!
That's awesome! We would love to get there one day, but it would require a lot more income. Just getting our needs under 60% would be a major accomplishment. I hope you accomplish all you're setting out for! 💜
Gm! Great check in, its ok to splurge on yourself every now and then. You didnt accrue debt to do so and you both did lots of great things w the return money.
I don't live anyone with sticky fingers, but I do live in an area where tornados happen so that's a huge reason I do not keep cash lol. Too risky. I do plan on using my prop money for visual of my sinking funds and savings once I set them up.
Yes, but Win got bronchitis and was sick for a while, so he wasn't able to save his half. He doesn't get paid sick leave, unfortunately. We expected everything to cost around $4k plus a week of missed pay for Win. The final numbers weren't terribly different, but some unfortunate things happened that cost us more than predicted, like the $600+ cancelation fee for a messed up reservation. We're still fighting that, but who knows what will happen.
Wow guys, thanks for sharing! Im sorry to hear about the wifi and data situation, that really sucks as well as those bs cancellation charges. I hope you get the money back for them. Did yall have a good time though? How was the weather? was the water cold? lol
Thank you for the kind words! It was fun and the weather was beautiful. We spent a lot of time in hot tubs rather than on beaches, so the water was lovely! The big regret was how much it cost. We could've taken the kids to Disney World for less and avoided a lot of the headaches.
Hi guys, great check-in. Sorry to hear about wynns tooth situation. Ive def had a root canal and crown a time or two and it was about 1500 without insurance. Glad you guys have the money to fix it and not go into debt, tooth pain is the worse.
You're right on both fronts. I'm tempted to comment on how lucky we are but luck has nothing to do with it. Beau planned ahead and planned carefully and pulled me in line to start doing the same.
Beau gets running hugs from the kids daily now, but they haven't reached the age of demanding the newest game systems or Jordans yet. It'll be here before we know it and we're ready. 😂
