Really! There is good money in repairs, someone needs to get into that business of just doing repairs. I haven't lived in an area like that, people need repairs and not dish out thousands for a new roof
Here in Georgia, I have taken off roofs that not ever had felt under the shingles and that were 16 years old with no leaks. shingles keep the water out not the felt
Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks Gary. Your explanation and camera view was perfect. At least you gave me the confidence to try and locate any loose/bad shingles. I have a roof leak that has developed after 8 years. Hmmm, I just realized I need to find the paperwork for the roof installation. I inherited the house. Thanks again.
Dude im screwed, i have a slightly sloped Tar and gravel roof, if i start leaking in this California Atmospheric river storm how can i fix a tar roof, the roofers dont even do tar and gravel anymore
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tvzADoue89M.html After removing the stone do this, we used to do this all the time in the 70's and 80's it's hard to write it out of what to do, I'll find some more video and send them and do this early in the morning before the sun heats the roof up
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6icWgmysL70.html At the 2 min mark is how you would remove the stone and then patch it like on the first video I sent get it nice and clean with a wire brush so the roof cement sticks Hope this helps, try to find the leak in the attic first if you can get to it. sometimes you don't have enough room
@@customit thanks for those videos and advice on the tools to buy at home depot, i will save these videos on my phone for the future since im not going to ever move out of this home, i have one question, you dont have to heat the Henry roofing Tar up to soften it up, it goes on cold, i remember as a kid in the 70's i seen those tar roofers with a machine smoking hot tar to put up on roofs, and you can smell it a block away, so Henry Tar spreads on Cold, again thanks for the info, now i feel better because im learning.
I thought when I put these videos up that a few would watch and if it helped a handful of people that would be great, never thought it would get this many views but it has been up for 13 years. I started a book on roof repairs before this video and it was supposed to be around 20 - 30 pages in a pdf format and it got to the point I could now find an end to it, I was putting how to repair skylights, all kinds of roof vents, chimneys, flashings and was trying to cover everything, needless to say, but it grew into a huge book but never found the end. If I were to do it again the illustrations would be a lot better but still very detailed, I believe I could do this and list the things that are covered in it so that people would know what they are getting. So the question is what do you think a fair price would be for something like this? After all these years it's come back and said, do a book. It would take hundreds of hours to do and some legal stuff but it might be worth it Thanks for any feedback, thoughts and if there is something already out there please let me know
I like 3 tab shingles because u know they are spaced correctly. Just got a O.C Duatoon roof, this roofer making so many mistakes, I'm going to have to look if shingles spaced abd overlapped correctly. Will he surprised if done correctly.
Depends on the shingle, some come up better cool early in the morning and others when hot, using a putty knife works well when they are hot, you need to be patient and do a little at a time making sure you don't tear them Hope this helps
Nice video, I'm still curious about how far over to replace felt with damage. I suppose going over a shingle on both sides will do the trick as long as you have a foot or two of overlap. Thanks!
Thank you Gary! Very straight forward and to the point. It would be nice if EVERY repair video was like this, but not everyone wants to be as simple as you. They gotta throw in their this and that......
@@customit thanks gary, my shingles are GAF and the claims team said with pictures, and the standard 10 year rule, you can prove the shingles lost their tackiness or glue strip ( which part of the shingle manufacture defect) they will cut me a check for labor for each shingle for a roofer and parts/labor, go figure! in your experience, the shingle should always stick down and not lose its 'glue' strip adhesive correct? just hoping my claim gets approved!
@@mml1224 When shingles get old, 15 years and up the strips become brittle from all of the heat, some shingles come apart easier when cooler like in the morning before the sun heats them up and some come apart when hotter. In saying that the strips in my opinion will fail over time but not in all cases, I have repaired 20 year old roof and I can't get them apart without damaging them, I think if they are not sticking and it's been 10 years since they were installed then it seems that there would be a problem
@@customit thank gary, very helpful! i am thinking about putting down roof cement glue to keep them down, the shingle is intact and tight, do you prefer ' beads or S pattern with the glue, which do you recommend, then you have to pat them or step on them i believe?
@@mml1224 A couple of dabs will do and press them down with your hand, and if you have any nails that you see that are close to the edge of the tabs make sure you seal them so that they don't become a problem later. I see it all the time where people nail the shingle to high and sometimes they get a nail lower than it should be, one inch above the tab is usually what is recommended
I have this video in my saved Playlist, listed under roof repair for the past 10 years and finally written a review of how thankful i am on how much your video has saved my roof. thank you so much
Thank you for taking the time to make the video. I feel more equipped to repair my own roof now as no company, "has the time" to do such a small dollar amount repair.
