Really underrated movie with excellent chemistry from Falk and Cassavetes. You simultaneously feel bad for Nicky yet even worse for Mikey, knowing that despite the fact that Nicky was an asshole to him, he was the one to kill him.
they both fancy that they're good people too, yknow? nicky, ever the raskolnikov, the terrified criminal repenting for his deeds. mikey, the bastion of justice, the level-headed conscience on nicky's shoulders. and yet, that's only in each other's worlds. they live and die for each other and forget anyone existed outside of them at all. the women in their lives are merely tools with which to win either each other back or to hurt each other beyond repair. they abuse and assault and maim and destroy -- they do not register their victims as people. they, in the eyes of mikey and nicky, are extras in the story of their relationship. when forced to interact with the extras, they grow frustrated. _hurry up,_ they think, _i need to get back to_ *_him._* misogyny and racism, of course, play a role in this as well. it is part of their machismo facades, their identity as people. this is one of the foundations of their relationship. the oppressed are boosters so mikey and nicky can always be on the same level. like a job or a trophy, hurting these people is something to show each other and say, 'see? i am better than you. i am worthy of you. please run away now. please take me back now.' are they so gay that they're misogynistic or so misogynistic that they're gay? i think it's a(n un)healthy mix of both.
AND IT'S THE FACT THAT HE CHOSE TO COME BACK. HE NEEDED HIM. HE CHOSE TO AMEND THINGS. THAT IS WHAT KILLED HIM. HE OPENED THAT DOOR FOR MIKEY BUT MIKEY WILL NEVER NEVER DO THE SAME AFTER EVERYTHING THAT NICKY DID AND EVERYTHING THAT NICKY WAS. NICKY LOVED MIKEY AND THAT IS WHY HE DIED. HE COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT MIKEY. MIKEY COULD NOT LIVE WITH NICKY. MIKEY COULD NEVER OPEN THAT DOOR. FUCKED UP
A person who have accepted his fate(death) but in the end he couldn’t face it. Afraid and screaming don’t want to die. Now he want to live. He deserve second chance. He need his friend.
When I saw this movie I got the “how many ppl have you slept with” joke. What I didn’t get was when he said 2 and a half but now I’m 24 and It just makes complete sense to me on what he meant or at least I think either way it’s funny af 😂
