Overcoming Dyslexia is a provider of The Davis® Method. Personalized programs developed to help people with Dyslexia, Autism, ADHD, Neurodivergent thinking and other learning difficulties.
My intention is to change the current paradigm of learning disabilities, and make Davis a household name. This is because I believe that the Davis method is the most significant advancement in education in generations. My hope is that one day Davis will be an integral part of education and mental healthcare and that Davis will be the preferred method of helping people with dyslexia, autism and other learning difficulties. This is because once we understand what Ron Davis discovered, we realize that it is as profound and fundamental to human beings as the ideas of Newton and Einstein. In my lifetime, I want Davis to be realized and accepted as self-evident.

What if theres an actual language that should be using thats designed to help them thrive? We should be the ones learning their language, not the other way around.
Interesting video! I’ve watched some of your other videos as well and they offer great value. As I am watching them I am thinking that we tend to think we all experience (or perceive) the world in the same way, and that couldn’t be further from the truth… And that could be the key to help others. Ask ourselves: How do they experience/perceive the world around them? And start from there. Anyway, I’m in the process of learning more from your videos. This is an interesting approach. You’re very articulate now, by the way.

It sounds the teachers are not using a real researched tested reading program curriculum. The SRA Reading Mastery direct instruction developed in the United States does work. It is not site word method that does not work for dyslexics. It is a scripted phonetical reading method that teaches more then reading but at the same time a method of reading in a systematic logical way that building the students reading ability. The curriculum i currently use on my students is a faster parent version called "teacher your child reading in a 100 easy lessons."

Thank you for responding to my comment. I am very interested in you story and the journey that you continue to endure with dyslexia. I myself am dyslexic also and have similar struggles. I am a retired teacher living in Mexico and teaching English (language /Reading / writing / and advance English) to native Spanish speaking individuals mostly children. I continue to understand my own condition and my use this knowledge to help others with their dyslexia if I encounter this in someone with similar situations.

Such a helpful explanation, Carl. As a fellow Davis facilitator, I can only agree with what you say - that Ron Davis claims and we have experienced - the way we work with clients identifies the cause of their dyslexia. Removing the problem at root cause means the 'learning disability' symptoms begin to fall away naturally. As you do, too, I am sure, it is a delight to acknowledge the strengths and skills the person has too as an ADHD'er or a dyslexic.
Hi, I agree I don't like the term either From the Davis point of view dyslexia is a much better word. However, I have to start somewhere as a Davis facilitator I like to start with the terminology that most people understand and then bring them to the realization of Ron's work and the Davis programs.

I have dyslexia I cannot pronouncate a word to good i can read but when i see a new word i get trouble i thought i was dumb but when i when on youtube i see this word dyslexia i say i find out what happened to me but i have all the leaning disability are little bit and schizophrenia make reading even worst because schizophrenia does all kinda thing to your brain even your reading skills i find this dyslexia is to hard to one man to bear i wish all of us could of read just like every one else but your video was helpful thanks👍🏿
If you did a Davis program to help with your dyslexia I know it would improve your reading greatly. I am not sure if the Davis method would help with the schizophrenia that would be exploratory thing for you, your doctor and your facilitator. I do think that it would not hurt to try (under supervision with doctor particularly concerning medication) as you could stop at any time if you found it was not helpful. If you do decide to do a Davis program make sure you are open and discuss the extent of your schizophrenia and your needs with your facilitator.
To the parents: Did you try the SRA direct instruction reading program reading mastery designed for parents call "teach your child in a 100 easy lessons" i have used this on many children to teach reading. It works.
Taking a quick look, it looks like an adapted phonic based approach that was developed it the 1950s and is not based on what is coursing dyslexia or any other learning difficulty. I personally I would not recommend it to anyone with dyslexia or to someone with any other LD. Having said that, if a child is not dyslexia or does not have a LD label of any kind then it may work for them.
@@eldonjanzen9822 No I have not tried it and I don't need to. As I said it is a phonics program and they are basically all the same. If a program is not dealing with the root cause of the dyslexia then that program is triggering the dyslexia and likely coursing more of a problem. The reason they appear to work is because the child is forcing themselves to focus so it looks like they can read. You may want to watch my other videos # 1, 4 and 11 would be helpful.
@@eldonjanzen9822 No I have not tried it. It looks like a basic phonics program and they are basically all the same when you take a close look. The problem with phonics programs is they are not addressing the root cause so, by definition they could also be creating more of a problem than they are actually fixing. The Davis program is addressing what is causing the learning problem in the first place. This is a very important point to understand, if someone has not understood this then they've missed the point about Davis.
@@OvercomingDyslexia it's just that this SRA reading program is very well organized and it teaches the basic reading and i would guess the expansion activities could be OG techniques. I understand that this reading program is not the end in it self but part a large experience with reading words. This SRA reading proram gives the children a systematic strategy of reading that he or she can use on other words not introduced in the reading program. I have taught so many children with this method and I have not been disappointed. It is ironic that I teach reading because I myself am dyslexic. The road of my life has been rough with many struggles. I personally do not believe dyslexia is a gift but a curse. Most of my friends and associates do not understand this condition. I forget names, I have problems with directions (thank God for Google maps) I forget or can't "see" in my mind the middle letters of words (to spell them, more then six letters long). Thank God for spell checking. I still get my right and left confused. So take it from a dyslexic, direct instruction is God sent. Remember DI its a tool and tools when applied correctly help solve problems.
I understand the feeling, I also felt the same way for many years. Doing a Davis program and then becoming a facilitator changed that for me. If you or someone you know is have difficulty I would recommend you contact a Davis facilitator and do a program. It will change things the better.

It's different but school has a lot to answer for in people's confidence in adulthood. You're right these negative paradigms are crap for everyone concerned. I think it will change in 15 years as the research is developing. 2nd I see a contrast between use of the term learning *difficulty* in uk vs learning *disability* in the US which I think has a negative affect on everything including research (there). Carl, your insight and experience are deeply appreciated from this mama of dyslexic kiddos! I have only just discovered the Davis method and feel I’ve stumbled upon a miracle. Your explanations and sharing your real life experience have made it easier for me to grasp Davis’ concepts from the book. I have enjoyed this so much, and wish I could have been one of the participants, because I have so many questions. I am working with a 10 yr. old boy who cannot read at all. A friend whose daughter was profoundly dyslexic told me about the Davis book. I read it in one night. I found you, Mr. Nigi, and watched your videos on youtube, and was so inspired. Last summer I took the beginning level workshop for the Davis Method. I have worked diligently to use the methods, with little success. I need to speak with you, if I possibly could. I think my kiddo has problems other than just dyslexia. Thanks so much for all the value you bring!

I’m 50 I was diagnosed in the early 70s my parents at the time with other parents with there children also dyslexic were in a fight with the school board back then they went to the media there was a teacher from the university in Sudbury Ontario who saw this on tv she contacted my parents she herself had dyslexia she knew how to teach children with dyslexia so she became my teacher I was taught in a different way how to read and write it took 4 years to correct I do not agree with anyone or any school saying dyslexia is a disability no it’s not it’s a different way of learning and can be corrected that mentality needs to change I can’t believe this is still looked at in this way wow I suggest to anyone who is a teacher or a parent of a dyslexic child to read the book The gift of dyslexia. It’s not a disability

I was always good with my hands like you, so I was lucky to find a full time occupation painting and decorating. I've worked in many other Industries, but I can't work in my industry forever. I started crying when you held up the letter A and explained the confusion about words that don’t have a picture I can attach a meaning to. It clicked in me and I felt like that child in school again, working so hard to keep up, often feeling confused and out of place (self diagnosed when I began hearing and reading of dyslexia, now in my 50s). Moving to a different country as a teenager and learning a second language, I think, helped me break out of the box of feeling stuck behind. Thank you so much for posting this!
Thank you, I am glad you found it helpful. I did a Davis program then I was 40 and then trained as a facilitator. It is never to late to do Davis and I would suggest you go to the main Davis website and find a facilitator closest to you. This could be either for yourself or for anyone you may be helping.

I’ve been trying to develop a multidimensional system that could piggyback unto our existing linear language systems. Linear language is good at giving directives in a multidimensional world of chaos but mostly ineffective at providing solutions. My system provides the multidimensional space from which language emanates multidimensional structure instead of linear lines to follow. This provides non-linear thinkers a puzzle solving experience instead linear directives.
Hi Dan, thank you for you comment. You may want to check Davis out is as it sounds like what you are describing 'multidimensional world' is already part of the Davis program. We describe it as picture thinking to our client, it is also the part of the gift side of dyslexia.
@@OvercomingDyslexia: my thesis suggests that dyslexics and multidimensional thinking is the correct way to think. By creating conformity to the linear world thinking it seems to diminish their gift. I’ll check out Davis work.
The Davis method was developed by Ron Davis who is dyslexic and autistic. You are correct about dyslexics being multidimensional thinkers, Ron believes it is the gift side of dyslexia and autism. However, Ron also realized that he lived in a world that is largely linear thinking and that all of us need to be able to understand the linear world. The Davis method helps people who are not linear thinkers to learn how to think that way with out disturbing or suppressing the multidimensional thinking and the benefits that come with it.
A LANGUAGE THEORY THAT OFFERS MORE FREEDOM Language has many mysteries that can be understood with a new theory of language. Some mysteries are ( language acquisition by infants, universal grammar, languages origin, and thinking in language). All these and more I won’t elaborate on, they can be studied independently. The question is to what extent has language affected the trajectory of the human species, and can a new language theory change our trajectory for the better. I believe it can, and with all the new technologies available it’s a great opportunity for us to do so. Language is the first, and most important cultural operating system. Language shapes the way we think, it shapes culture, it creates political systems and we try to understand our world through the language prism. Linguistic studies the origins and the evolution of language, but just like philosophy it doesn’t make much effort to change and improve it. So language left unchecked evolves towards simplicity. This evolved system needs to be challenged with new ideas and technologies. THE GOAL IS TO TURN LANGUAGE INTO A PUZZLE SOLVING EXERCISE FOR THE COLLECTIVE HIVE MIND First we must recognize the puzzle/playing field language emerges from. It seems to come from a mindful realm I call a matrix of possibilities from which our imaginative facilities creates possible worlds. The problem is that both the mindful possible worlds and the real world are multidimensional and we try to bridge the gap with a linear language system. This leaves us with a, we can’t see the forest for the trees situation. ANOTHER OBJECTIVE IS THAT THE LINEAR STRUCTURE OUR LANGUAGE USES IS INADEQUATE FOR FINAL SOLUTIONS. The world is full of perspectives but we need a user friendly space that will attract the collective and find agreed upon solutions, because the hive mind is much smarter and more compassionate then a ruling class. I wrote this as an introduction to my language project that I started several years ago I feel it’s important to introduce linear thinker to multidimensional thinking

I do not have an answer other than, the Davis method was developed by a dyslexic for dyslexics and to help people with learning difficulties. Meaning people who struggle with phonic, traditional teaching methods focusing ADD, ADHD and Autism. People who struggle in this way may find the Davis method more helpful. Excellent video once again. Sadly, some people know the price of everything but the value of nothing. My husband and I have had to make great financial sacrifices to afford our son's many autism-related therapies per week, however I cannot imagine how our lives would have been had we not done them. In the case of this program, I think having the expertise of a Davis facilitator would make a world of difference. We need to learn to lean on other people's expertise and experience. I would be interested in doing the Young Learners Program at home as a preparation for meeting you next year once our son turns six. Would you suggest that?
When we talked on the phone we did talk about your son doing the young learns reading program with a facilitator and the difficulties you/he could have concerning his autism. I think the same difficulties could arise if you tried doing the YLP yourself with the kit. Not impossible to do just challenging for you I think. Oh my goodness, I wish everyone could watch this video. Wow, I've been learning about LDs for years and no one has ever explained, for instance, how the symptoms correlate with trouble with the senses. Excellent video, so informative. 👌
There are examples of what we call Symbol Master, modelling words like "the" or "an" in Ron Davis books. When someone does a program the facilitator will have a training session will the client and the person who will help them at home to explain how to do this work.
I had my son watch this video with me. We really appreciate your life story. My son is 9 and his dyslexia is severe. He has 2 sisters (one of them his twin), who do not struggle with reading or writing, so it's hard not to compare himself to them and others and he gets very frustrated. The more I speak to him (and his sisters) about dyslexia the more comfortable he feels with himself. I am still learning about the wilson method and I've read the book. The methods we've incorporated from the book have worked amazingly well so far! He couldn't remember all the alphabet after years of repetitive learning, singing videos etc. After 1 day of making the alphabet all in clay, he could tell me backwards and forwards! ... Any way just wanted to say thanks for the videos!
Do you mean the Davis method? This is the method I use as a Davis facilitator. I am so glad you and your son enjoyed the videos. Fantastic to here about your sons success with the alphabet. This always happens once we have shown our clients how to be oriented and turn off or control the disorientation. The Davis method is truly amazing I am so glad it is working for you. I don't get stuck on the sight words, often I can't get the word from my brain to engage my mouth, its like I gears are slipping. Frequently I say "I cant see the word,but I just cant grap it". Often I discribe the thing, most people can guess the word, but it loses the flow of that Im saying or poeple often write me off as stupid because I can't recall the name of something common.
Hi Fathom, this is the trigger working backwards. Because people need the trigger words or sight words to connect the picture words together when we read, speak and think. If the trigger words are not understood by our mind, we cannot form complete sentences or connect our thoughts together. So we experience what I used to call a "brain freeze". I now know this "brain freeze" as disorientation. If you talk to a facilitator in person they will be able to help you to understand this better.
