This was wonderful to find. My mother worked on the track at Pompolona hut from 1966-72. Her name is Marlene..the creek was named after her. She was delighted to see your video.

What a wonderful video. Thank you so much. I love the fact that you were quite happy to be the last to arrive for the duration of the walk and got rewarded with those brilliant views. Patience as they say... I will hike the Milford Sounds next summer. Your video has given me a good indication of what lies ahead. Once again thank you.

Thanks for the great video and commentary on your trip - stunning! I enjoyed your dry Kiwi humour, and I loved the closeups of the Weka chicks and the Kereru in particular. ❤️ I live in Rotorua and this walk is on my bucket list. 😊

And the most important tip.....take LOTS of insect repellent!!!! Even for those people who think they are immune.

Better by far than any proprietary insect repellent is one you can make quite easily by yourself. It is a 50/50 mixture of Olive Oil and "Dettol" (a popular antiseptic solution). It may smell a bit awful, but so do many of the proprietary solutions, and if you happen to scratch yourself, the dettol's antiseptic properties will be appreciated. Also, the olive oil is good for the skin. Just shake up the mixture before each application, as it will separate. Then smear over most of the exposed surfaces -- and if you miss some, it won't matter. As with all anti-insect preparations -- do not get any in your eyes. I learnt about this many years ago before walking the Track -- and had enough time to go to the grocery shop and get a small bottle each of olive oil and dettol, then to the pharmacy for a spare bottle, then mix some. Easy, and it worked a treat! Even while sitting still it kept the mosquitoes -- those awful, dreaded, otherwise voracious, Milford Track mosquitoes, at bay. I enjoyed my walk without being bitten.

I see they have enlarged the huts. In 1984 (when i did the walk when I was 35) there were only 24 beds for independent walkers. Still looks fabulous. The walk down from MacKinnon's pass was the hardest. On the last day we had over 24 inches of rain.
