When she sings from the heart, as she does here, the subtleties she has taken from Billie Holiday and ingrained into her very being is oh so evident to anyone fully familiar with Billie's immense, inventive musicality. The same chills I get from Billie's singing, I get once again from Angelina, and there is no one to compare it to regarding any other singer I have ever experienced.

This is obviously a great song, because I liked all the different versions you highlighted, but when Angelina started singing the tears started to flow. We have been told by Toby Gad that Angelina's new song "Bad Valentine" will be out in Sept.and that other new songs will follow. We as fans are wondering if this will have a effect on when her album will be out. No word about her album in months. If "Bad Valentine" is not given a great promotion this time around it will be just another great song of Angelina's that "could have been, should have been" a big hit, and charted well, but did not. Since Republic Records seems to always be asleep at the wheel when it comes to promoting Angelina, it is going to be all up to Toby Gad to make Angelina into the superstar she deserves to be. If you are interested in Angelina's phrasing, you have to look at her performance of My Funny at Las Vegas. I have looked at a great many performances of this song, and Angelina's is the only one where the words actually fit into the rhythm of the song, instead of speeding up and slowing down all over the place. I think she pulled off a miracle of phrasing.
Alan, her version of Patsy Cline's 'Crazy' on tik tok is a great example of her not wanting to mess with a bona fide classic but at the same time influencing the lyrics enough so that, unbelievably, her version is scary good, meaning how in the world does anyone dare say her version is better than Patsy's!
So I'll say in general I can appreciate the concept of showing this generations two biggest female stars . I won't nit pick. It's not worth it to go thru some things that are a little off. I have many years in the music industry. I'm in America. I'll just take 1 issue that's borderline offensive. You said people only cried for putri because she is blind. SMH. that's very rude and completely false. PUTRI has the best voxal skills and techniques in the world today. Her transfer of emotions and voice inflection is off the charts. Her distinctive tones are exceptional because she is so well supported ,her upper resonance is phenomenal. I could get very technical. My point is that's why people cry. Nothing to do with her disability. She got rid of that label long ago. And lastly Putri has mastered the flute. ,xylophone. And electronic keyboard with all the bass and drum pads. Putri writes ,arranges ,composes everything primarily by herself. There are many experienced musical industry veterans. That are currently and collectively calling Putri the greatest female vocalist alive today. She has passed 100 million views alone on you tube. And as successful on Spotify, tik tok , apple music you really short changed Putri more then needed. Achievements matter. Putris also won. Numerous awards. That are important and Asia's version of grammys.
Thanks Alan for this video. I am just a music lover and have only learned a few things from professionals here on RU-vid. The professionals have analyzed numerous singing techniques used by Angelina, always being praised. I still listen to many other artists, but when I return to Angelina, I appreciate her music that much more. Obviously, she is making choices more to my liking.
From very early on I noticed and was impressed with her phrasing. It's not only the emphasis and intensity she places on specific words, but it's the timing on which she sings them. Many originals are sung in a rhythmic manner - words in rhythm or on beat. Angelina will go off beat and sing phrases timed more as one would speak, making the phrase much more relatable and therefore more believable. I've commented many times 'it's the phrasing, the phrasing, the phrasing'!

One more example I would give is her studio version of Adele’s “All I Ask,” where Adele sings “what if I never loooove again” but Angelina sings “what if I neveeeer, love again” For Angelina to he finality of it, of what it would be like if it never happens again, is what needs to be emphasized..
