Why tow in reverse? Could you use a rear hitch for long pulls, then flip around for pushing... Seems like a possibility of tensioner damage doing it this way unless you have the rear engine version. Either version you'll want to add an oil cooler with thermostatically controlled fan as these engines have a tendency to overheat their oil under high loads or slow speeds.
Yes I’m running a single Surefly and a slick. I have my warning set at 405 degrees and red at 425 even though the engine is 450. The only time it gets close to 405 will be in the climb in summer and all I have to do is lower the nose and the chts go back down. I don’t like running over 400.
@@Avionics_test_pilot we’re getting our engine factory rebuilt currently. Lycoming will give us a surefly for left side and a right mag. We’re gonna go ahead and put a surefly on the right once we hit the 500 hours on the right one.
R1S owner here, also in blue, love the color -- my phone charger works fine while I'm driving... perhaps I have an more recent model or something? (iphone 11 pro)
I have a IPhone SE and it worked when parked but would slide around when driving. I have a MagSafe case so the new charger holds the phone and charges. I have the only blue R1S in Little Rock but I have started to see a lot more around town. There were two white ones in the school pickup line the other day.
The number one problem IMO is the door handles. They stick out when unlocked, no secret when's it's unlocked. That design is horrible, cheap, and it looks awkward. Love the R1S though.
I love it. I think the problem with the turning comes from the direct drive axle in the rear. Im not aware of anyone doing this but it should be possible to modify a lawn mower differential to fit and replace the stock axle.
Thanks for the great video Evan, I appreciate the conversation because it adds more context. Couple questions: 1. Regarding the relay; did you use it because you were planning to add a third horn? I was thinking that, if the Rivian had two originally, a relay wouldn’t be necessary. 2. Does the relay add a delay to the second and third horns? I sort of hear the clown horn go before the other ones. 3. I doubt there is any noticeable difference but do you feel that your placement of the horns would make their sound be dampened by the frunk’s container? 4. Did you set the Rivian into any mode before working on it? Idk if it should be in “service mode” or else for safety purposes.
Didn't even realize the SUV version was out as I haven't seen one IRL yet. I see the pickups here & there - which is great. What do you mean the OEM wireless charger didn't work? It was, by design, not supplying power to the charger when the vehicle is in motion or your phone would just fall off so it didn't matter either way?
Does it have a security camera system similar to Tesla's? Does the heated steering wheel warm the entire wheel or just areas, like the 3 and 9 o'clock positions?
The security system is very similar to Tesla. It records motion while the car is parked and if you want it to record while driving You have to plug in your own hard drive. The steering wheel heats the top half and the bottom but not the sides. It gets pretty warm.
Outstanding video! I have found that the factory charger only works with my iPhone 15 pro (with a cover) if I lay it parallel to the dash, rather than perpendicular. This should not be the case, but I just wanted to pass this along to those who want to use the factory charger. Keep up the videos Evan!
found it, thank you. Although it could definitely fit in a 20x20 garage, I have to agree with the other comment. If you have about 2 feet behind the R1S, then you'd only have 1 foot left to spare in the front, since 2 feet + ~17 feet for the length of the Rivian would give you 19 feet, leaving you with only a little over 1 foot in front of the Rivian. Thanks though anyway. Pretty cool that the back opens even with the limited space in the back.
Thank you this is useful. You have more space left in the front compared to the back, so your garage depth has to be more than 20 foot. 201” (rivian length) + 23” (space in the back) = 18.5 foot.

Hope you enjoy your R1S. Fellow owner here, and I love mine. One of Rivian's best unexpected (for me) features (among many) are the regular OTA updates to the software that controls many aspects of its performance. Ride quality was initially one of my few dislikes about the vehicle, and the OTAs have made regular improvements on that. So much so, that it's approaching excellent status imo. Enjoy, and may it serve you as well as your RR apparently did.
This video and the horn video you did later are both spot on. Seeing the engineering that went into Rivian’s charger mat - that thing has to cost them $1,000 and you’re right - it has never worked for anyone. I bought the same TWraps charger mat the same week I picked up my R1S and it works grt but I also hate that both USB ports are filled. I’m not going to take the time to rewrite like you did but love that you’re showing us how to and calling attention to some Rivian changes for the future, ie the little pen holder slot in front of the charger pad???? It holds a few toothpicks in my car. ;) Solid videos!
Great video Evan. I remember folks talking about the change sometime between late 2022 into early 2023 when Rivian took out the second horn and how some were complaining. When I picked up my R1S in the Summer of 2023c I was curious and couldn’t believe the clown car horn they allowed to go in these beasts.No clue how the horn decision passed any team’s approval TBH?? I had to watch your video just to see how to fix this and unfortunately I don’t have the time but grt job walking us thru it. The outlet is another changed that happened to reduce costs, so thx for doing that piece too. Love my R1 and no vehicle can be everything to everyone but the horn was for sure a hungover Monday morning misstep in Normal for someone. Cheers
Thanks for the video. Do you know the size of the washer/nut that you used to fasten the horns onto the Rivian in that spot? I'd like to do the same thing because I agree the horn that comes on the Rivian from the factory isn't very good.

Evan, Thank you... look at adventurehightech stow n charge. also magsafe, already wired for the existing rivian plug and has a nice closeable compartment to take advantage of the unused space. May cost a bit more, but about 10 minutes to install. Best mod of mine so far.
Doesn't this unit serve another purpose when reprogramming or updating the key fobs? I think there was something about that which is why there is more complexity on the circuit board than would make sense for a charger alone.
I don’t think it does but I’m not 100%. It is on the can bus and when I go into service mode the charger is now offline but I don’t get any faults. I am looking into it. Worse case I solder the connector back on and reinstall.

Totally agree and maybe they could have removed the wireless charger and leave the 500hz horn if they were looking to cut costs. I bought the hella dual tone horn and replaced it. I didn't even use the 400hz one that Rivian has. Search for the DT connector which plugs directly to the Rivian horn connector. Great video.

The phone chargers work well for our pixel phones. Gotta put them in the right spot which is really easy but my phone stays put. I've heard others having trouble with it as well.
I have a 4 years old pixel phone and the charger works pretty good. I wish I can turn the charger off some times because it always charge my phone and I don’t like that. I like to put the phone there but not charging.
@@Avionics_test_pilot it's definitely an apple problem. I've been able to charge a myriad of android models but iPhone will not sync at all. On my android phone it will charge if you hold it in the air half an inch above a charge pad. iPhone seems to require a closer connection
Agreed. I bought the S00nish/Adventuretech one and I think it's totally worth it, looks a lot better, plus you don't have to salvage the power connector from the OEM charger.
@@gerrylum yes, the integrated power adapter makes it great fit / replacement. I'm also getting the full 15 watts of power to both phones using the Apple MagSafe Chargers (OEM).
Phone charger works always everywhere on my iPhone, hence all the coils. This is how phone chargers work, needs all the coils to be able to sit anywhere on the surface
