As a farmer these vehicles for us are useless, No guts, cannot pull anything, range with lights and heaters laughable. Maintenance much more expensive if you can get it! Towing it has taken in on a flat bed trailer. Try driving a EV in the winter and autumn or at night as the range plummets by 2/5ths. The cost of batteries and having them fitted is very expensive and the old batteries are classed as dangerous goods, flammable! Charging them if your like us on a generator not mains you've had it. As a rural vehicle no! Then for cities, yes
This all seems true to me but at the same time only true for now, a 2024 thing. I think these are adjustment issues, more a short term speed bump to the complete domination of EVs in the 2030s. EV tech gets better every year and production prices are falling in concert. Early adopters might lose out a bit on resale, but everyone else in the market should realise it's not their problem. Snap up an EV at a good price. Have to agree to disagree on buying a PHEV. Why? It's only after I bought an EV I realised range anxiety is a myth, and I live in Australia. Many PHEVs end up running on petrol and being a maintenance nightmare.
Thanks for the comment. I DON'T disagree with you with most of your points 😊 1. Ev range anxiety is a myth as I mentioned in the video. 2. I said the best value car in Ireland at the moment is a 3 or 4 year old Tesla M3. 3. Agree that PHEV don't suit everyone. But 50% of commuters in Ireland are within 16km of their work place. It's entirely feasible to charge at home and commute cheaply on the batteries. They don't suit heavy motorway driving, so not for everyone. But the stats show in an Irish context they would work excellently. Factor that in with the fact they are about €15000 cheaper than an EV it's a strong argument for them. You make a good point about early adopters. It should be a bell graph like any new technology. I'd argue in an EV context, the early adoption phase ended about 5 years ago. So it's worrying that there's up to 52% depreciation on 12 month EVs at the moment. We should be exiting the outer edge of that bell curve, yet there seems to be still instability in the market. I'd love to come back in 1 year and do the same video again and see if this is a natural self correction or if eV sales are still sluggish? Thanks again for the nice comment. Have a good day!
Not sure about your Tesla Model 3 price figure of €38k, they start (according to Tesla website - & Tesla do not discount) at €41k before options. Tesla M3 wasn't €48k last year, I bought one, including options the price was €45k .But getting back to the point of the video, 2 main issues, the Irish government tried to push EV on people, and have suffered a backlash due to this, & sadly the sheer noise of anti EV groups is unreal - even some dealerships, that really should know better, are just telling lies about EV & used EV. I see the Merlin car auction EV that you picked was a very used first gen Nissan Leaf - the worst of all EV. We own 2 EV, and save €250/mth on running costs - charging at home.
@marktoby8113 I test drove the entry level model 3 in Cork in late April 2024 and it was €38000 registered privately. They have since increased, you are correct as my family member bought one the start of July. Thanks for the correction on the prices. It's something I only noticed when I put out the video that I was 3k out. You are correct. The Merlin Auctions case was a worst case scenario I agree. However.... a 2012 vehicle is far too soon to be only scrap value. An ICE equivilant would atill fetch about €6000. I have 2004, 1991 and 1972 cars here that run with fine with little maintenance. I hate to see that early EVs are essentially scrap. We can just hope that Gen1 EVs deserve to be forgotten about and that later revisions will have much improved longevity and can reach the 20 year mark like an ICE. I didn't want the video to be an EV bashing piece, but rather an explanation of a volatile market. EVs are impressive and certainly have their place in Ireland, depending on geography and commuting distance, etc. You'll note at the end of the video I call out a 2019 or 2020 Tesla 3 as being the best value used car you can buy at the moment. Thanks for the comment, hope you enjoyed the video
I'm not convinced on the wording. I personally only know of one person who moved back to an ice car from an EV. Could the uptick in ice sales be people moving from another ice car? Now that the post pandemic supply chains have stabilised, your not waiting a year for your car, people held off their purchase. My place of work as 30 EV charging points, if your not plugged in by 7am then your not getting a spot. Buying a new car of any kind is a money pit.
@MosesKaldor You make good points, I don't disagree with you. In Ireland specifically the Irish Government had bet on continuous steady EV growth until 2030. Since ICE car sales are up 25% from last year the implication is that less people are swapping to EVs. That's worrying from the Government's stand point as Car Sales in general are up from last year. Perhaps it's a temporary glitch while world shipping stabilises. Only time will tell. However if you read the news in the last week, you will see VW and Toyota increasing investment in ICE cars. To me that also suggests a lack of confidence in EVs in the current climate. Buying a new car at the moment is expensive business for sure. 👍 Thanks for the informative comment
@@HobTecCars VW and Toyota are just hoping they can buy time because they are behind the curve on EVs hoping to get the most out of their ICE assets in the meantime. Wouldn't see their comments it is as a reliable analysis of the future market, especially Toyota.
Europe wanted to sell German cars all over China for the last two decades, and when the Chinese learned to make better cars, the Europeans are preventing them from selling their cars in Europe, and then Europe calls themselves democratic, freedom and equality loving blah blah blah.. Until Asia was under developed, Europe and America kept on talking about globalization, global village, global market, border less market, open market etc etc. Once Asians started making better products, Europeans and Americans now accuse Asia of over producing, dumping, etc etc. Why can't you westerners learn to compete and win?
@vsr3777 I totally agree 👍 Open competition is very healthy. By the way I'd argue Japan (Asia) has been making superior cars to the rest of the world for the last 60 years!
@mikesaerial It's the exact same process for 3zz in an E11. Only difference is the 1zz injectors are needed and that the TPS wiring SHOULD be plug and play
@@HobTecCars Thank you. last question, will it not be running lean when i use 1zz injectors? because as you've said , it will run leaner when you dyno-ed it.
PHEV will only make sense for people who do small mileage and will plug in every day... and are willing to pay for the inefficiency of a car with 2 drive systems that weigh more than just one efficient one.
Agreed that PHEV does not suit long driving. The CSO figures say the average commute distance in Ireland is 16km. That means that 50% of commuters in Ireland could be commuting for free on an PHEV. New PHEVs are offering 60km range on battery. It's a win / win for the average commuter.
Thank you for this great video sir. Did you notice any changes in the long term and short term fuel trims? i am planning to slap the 1zz throttle body and airducts on my mums car lol
@superjojo555 Thanks for the nice comments. Short term the fuel efficiency is less than normal. Maybe a -3 or -4mpg. But longterm, after the ECU learns the setup I found my MPG improved with the 1zz modifications. After 200 miles the ECU learns the setup. I saw a slight improvement of MPG. Maybe +1mpg difference. That improvement in fuel efficiency may have been down to my cleaning of the parts and having new gaskets fitted.
Rolling out biofuel in a lot of countries would be a great start, nevermind making it cheaper :D It's even hard to get the stuff in large enough quantities right now, and will be essentially impossible in the long run. We need HVO100 et al for the spaces where EVs REALLY don't work - and won't for a long time, if ever - and individual motorized transport is not one of them.
Hi, We don't get the ACTION package in Europe, so I have never seen one in the flesh. However, I am 90% confident the same instructions would apply since they are an OEM skirt. For example, my car was a JDM Japanese Import, yet I was able to fit SideSkirts from UK car. So the chassis is the same.
Most PHEV aren’t great to drive unless you spend huge money and they’re not economical on long journeys. Electric cars are very refined and great fun to drive
I disagree on that point. A Tesla 3 in my view is a far less refined driving experience vs a high end PHEV hybrid. EVs are too heavy for a pure driving experience (in my view). The 2 aren't comparable. A EV weighs almost twice as much a PHEV. How the cars react in tight corners under braking is completely different. Yes Hybrids aren't great on long drives, especially motorway driving. But if your commute is <60km a day you are essentially getting the benefits on a EV for about 70% less of the price. IE, save €15000.
@@HobTecCars in some respects PHEVs can combine a lot of the upsides of both. Range because of the energy density of fuel, EV acceleration, quietness when driving on battery etc. But they also combine all the negatives: You have two complicated drivetraines, which means more stuff can and will break, you have an additional battery which is just more ressources needed when the car is being produced, the battery is also small which means limited range and more wear and tear on it compared to a well managed battery in a pure EV with the same battery chemistry, because for the PHEV to get decent electric range you will have to fully load it, which is pure stress for the battery. On top of the impact on the production side the emissions while driving are also unfavourable: If you drive them wrong the CO2 impact of a PHEV will be as bad or worse of a petrol or diesel ICE vehicle ...and if you drive them right the car will have to force you to burn stuff, because your fuel will go bad otherwise and stuff ;) I agree that a PHEV makes sense for some people - and in countries where fuel is cheap it's especially tempting- in the next 5 to 8 years, but in the long run it's a really dumb idea.
BYD announced that one of their biggest factory will be built in Turkey Q3 2025. That means, the additional EU tariff will not be applied. MG is also planning to built another EV factory in Turkey too.
It's probably because of the EU ban on ICE vehicles from 2030. I personally don't think that will happen. Low C02 Hybrids are the way forward in my view
@@HobTecCars 2030? I thought 2035 was the EU one, no? Some countries are stricter though. The UK wanted to be as well, but we shall see... ;) Technically the EU doesn't ban ICE vehicles in 2035, just to be clear. It mandates that they be net zero. All new cars and vans registered in the EU are set to be zero emission and therefore would have to be run on E-Fuels produced from green hydrogen- which is a terrible idea, because even if we had them in enough quantities, which we don't, it will be at least 5 to 7 times more energy intensive to filll them up compared to just charging an battery EV. Well, you could use biofuels but you just don't have enough of the stuff and - like hydrogen - you will need it in other areas more desperatly.
Well EU member countries signed on to the Paris agreement. The EU has also multiple bills and therefore laws that require it to hit certain reduction goals. Those will not be possible to achieve without achieving emission reductions in every area - including transport and mobility. Why push them? Because it's a classic hen and egg scenario - how and why would you finance all the infrastructure without EVs on the road? You need to start eventually.
@jhkcreates8462 Thanks for the detailed comment. Really excellent points made here. The EU and UK committee to 80% EVs by 2030, which is an effective ban. www.forbes.com/sites/neilwinton/2024/06/20/european-2030-ev-sales-targets-slashed-again-raising-ice-ban-doubt/ I didn't know about the technical net zero. I guess technically it's not an EV ban. But at this point it's hard to see any other solution since EV vehicles are leaps and bounds ahead of other alternatives. I agree about the problems with Hydrogen, it just moves the problem up the chain. Essentially until we crack Fusion power, there is a partial energy deficit somewhere in the supply chain. Whether it be fuel creation, transportation, or storage. Thanks again for the great points.
@Lowgradenarcolepsy In theory yes. But the numbers are so large. Most cars have about 55 microns of clear laquer applied. If you used a machine polisher and a strong compound the MOST you'd remove is 5 microns. So that means you'd have to machine polish your car 11 times before you damage the paint. Most cars are lucky if they get machine polished once in their lifetime. A good question though and worth highlighting.
@charlienevin293 I sanded it with 1000k grit sand paper, used plastic primer of a white colour. Finally used Toyota Super Red 3e5 as the colour on top. Used a laquer then to seal it all in then
Thanks man, think the garage that serviced it last didn't put the undertray back on right because that went as well doing 120 on the motorway lol. Would you remember if that undertray ties in with the bumper via a bolt or it holds by itself independent
I still have and use my Black Satin ’99 G6 1.6 6 speed, and love and enjoy every minute riding it. Every time i go to the garage to fix something, mostly tires there are always some mechanics asking me if i want to sell it, this starts in 2001 😅 specially the young guys are interested.
Helloo, great video and modification, but what type of water cooler you have? With the factory cooler there is no enough place for the main cooler hose, so I can't do this mod.
Thanks for the compliments. Not sure what you mean by water cooler? I am running the standard cooling system on the E11 Corolla. The Radiator hose from the radiator to the engine will fit fine, it is a little tight, but I promise it is fine.
for my e12 I just simply used Avensis parts, because is just plug and play, no modification is required, and Corolla verso air hose! also plug and play!
It's 90% likely this is the issue. If you don't have tools or a garage I'd recommend a mechanic doing it for you. Show them this video and it has all the steps and parts you need
@@HobTecCarsyes imma have to show them this video lols I hope the mechanic can fix it Lols I’ll keep u updated have a great day or night where ever ur from lol
@@HobTecCars @HobTecCars I remember watching your build very closely because you have a lot of knowledge of Toyota and all the rare parts. Would you believe you and some guy in the UK inspired me back in the day. I had 2001 Corolla SR, you know basically the face-lift G6R. It a was nice red one with a genuine TTE stamped spoiler, red G6R seat belts and stupidly rare white TTE alloys, produced by MiM. Just changed my profile pic to it. Glad I found your channel, best of luck with it!
That's really cool to hear. I know the other guy you are mentioning. His username was steven252, he still runs a store building ZZ engine wiring looms. Your car looks lovely, on Irish plates too, very exciting. The MIM is a lovely wheel for the E11, essentially a WRC spec. I want to do a video on the full E11 lineup at some stage. It'll take a while to put together. I want to do one on the Toyota Levin ae111 next. I will definitely buy a G6R someday. Just need to shift a few others cars :)
Very cool. The interior reminds me a lot of the JDM EK9 Civic Type R, but the technical specs are more akin to our USDM EM1 Civic Si. The yellow is gorgeous.
This cost me about €70 total in materials. Full video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ISYorRx2wAw.htmlsi=7ZcF9d-tiOLMTHIq Most shops I know charge between €60 to €90 per wheel!
Geat instructions there lad. Im based in ireland myself and run a channel around repairs and with a few corolla videos in there for good measure. I daily a tsport but my mrs has a 4zz 05 hatch and i have often wondered about the specifics of how to go about the 1zz mod. One thing that would be important for me is a completely stock look so would be interested to know if the 1zz air pipe to the airbox is a straight fit of whether a reducer would be needed. Did you ever see any negative effects from running this mod over time?
Thanks for the compliment, appreciate it a lot. The 1zz airline for a Celica will fit, but best to trim a bit of the end of with a saw as it's really too long in the 4zz engine bay. This was the mod will be OEM looking. No negative effects I noticed on my car. Ran the mods for 4 or 5 years and drove 35,000 miles with them. If anything.... my car ran better with them.
Hello! First of all - great video I’ve got an E120 (e12 5 door) with the same engine (4ZZ-FE) and have a few questions. I’ve managed to source a celica 2002 throttle body and inlet manifold , part numbers all match up. Regarding the wiring of the TPS - you say you can source the male connector from the celica loom to then plug the wires into - if i cannot source one of these what do i do? Also - what size diameter is the silicon hose if you or anyone else knows? Did you give the inlet and throttle body a comprehensive clean before you put them on too?
Hi thanks for the compliment much appreciated. I can help you out a lot I think. So first thing is first. I've never done this mod on a E12 but the process should be 90% the same. A good friend of the channel has bought the 1zz male TPS connectors from Aliexpress. The part links are in the description. They worked perfectly for him. He hand wired his 4zz TPS loom into that connector. The Airbox pipe diameter I used for an E11 was 76mm in diameter. This was a perfect size for the 1zz throttle body. On the Airbox size it was a little loose. But a simple Hose clamp worked perfectly to seal it tight to my airbox. Finally, yes I comprehensively cleaned the Throttle Body, IACV, and Intake Manifold before install. I recommend doing it if you have the time. My car honestly ran like a new car after, I think it made a difference. Follow me on hobtec_cars Instagram and message me there for any further help I can give.
I’ve sent you a message over on instagram. I’ve managed to source a male plug for the tps from a celica. However is the idle air control valve plug changed at all or will that be the same as what is on my car already?
I'm thinking of doing a front conversion on my 6gen celica because the front is really 90s and really clean, but I have to wait at least until I finish paying the loan for it LOL
@@HobTecCars nope, I'm in the process of research right now, since is my daily, I will have to do it right and it won't be cheap since you also need bonnet, headlights, side panels and core support
