We explore one of the most forgotten JDM cars of the 90s. The Toyota Curren is a JDM Legend in its own right, yet it is one of the most forgotten Japanese cars. Does it deserve JDM icon status?
My sister bought this car since 2012-2013 and she still have it but rarely driven cause of engine and gearbox. At first i thought this car was common outside my country (i live in brunei, its a small country) but since i check some video on yt, i realize that the curren is a rare car. Also my sister one is the curren xs 1995 with the 3sfe engine and automatic.
Wow that's cool, I know of Brunei. I visiting Maylasia and Indonesia in the past. Some really beautiful scenery and nature in Brunei. Indonesia and Maylasia drive on the left too side like Ireland
@@Synaps4 the 3sge one is really hard to find, especially in Brunei cause of the total unit that have been imported to the country (less than 15-10 unit I think) but good thing my sister bought the car for $2.5k Brunei dollar (around $1.8k USD)
It's funny to hear these are a rarity, here in NZ, you can spot these pretty frequently, more so than a 6g celica. Unfortunately, they're usually in pretty bad shape as they're used as cheap daily drivers. I've always liked the front on these though, it looks super aggressive with the right body kit. Good vid!
Thanks for the lovely compliments. I lived in NZ for a few months and I daily I saw some lovely Jap Import daily drivers. In Ireland even a rough condition Curren would make an excellent sale price because of its rarity.
Find me a full front clip swap 😭😭 looking for a 5spd 6th gen Celica in USA later this year, I'll definitely grab one if i line up a Curren front clip for it
dang, this is my first time hearing about this car. It seems like a very neat car! A shame that it is nearly forgotten now. Thanks for the documentary!
Always thought the front end of the Celica was pretty ugly, and I gotta say the Curren looks significantly better. I imagine plenty of people would be interested in it as simply a better looking alternative to the Celica.
So basically, this could have been sold here in the United States as the Lexus version of the Toyota Celica. I wish they had actually done that. That would have been a very interesting luxury sports coupe.
That is an interesting idea! I think I would have preferred it to the vs the Toyota Camry. We didn't have the Camry as an offering in Ireland during the 1990s era. If the Curren was not discontinued from 1998 onwards in would have gotten the 3SGE BEAMs RedTop with 201hp. It would have been quite the car.
I'm thinking of doing a front conversion on my 6gen celica because the front is really 90s and really clean, but I have to wait at least until I finish paying the loan for it LOL
@@HobTecCars nope, I'm in the process of research right now, since is my daily, I will have to do it right and it won't be cheap since you also need bonnet, headlights, side panels and core support
Nice car! I wonder how hard and complicated for importing the car into Ireland from Japan. I heard VRT might be super expensive also hard to get the car insured? Another thing will if the parts be hard to find. It funny I always ended up want the car that is not usually on the road in Ireland.
The process is not that difficult. I've not done it myself yet, but I've had friends too it. There is 1 Toyota Curren for sale in Japan now with 51,000 miles and Grade 4/5. It is selling for €8174. The transport and insurance to bring it to Ireland would be about €2000 to €2500. The VRT is capped at €200 for 30 year old car with maybe €45 for VAT. If you VRT'd that car today you could be looking at 2k or 3k. So essentially. I'd wait until next year to bring one in. Finally, the 3SGE in the Curren is a common engine. You'd have no gassle for parts. (Not that it'd let you down anyways) Since the Curren is essentially a Celica, there are UK specialists supplying brand new Celica brakes, suspensions, etc. So essentially you'd be covered :)
@@HobTecCars THX Man i appreciate it. I i own one, and it is only one piece in Czechia :D that´s why i ask :) Can i ask you where are you from? My tip is Poland 😁
@@zdenekrichter1393 Ireland! We have lots of AE111's here, thankfully its not uncommon to see one on the roads here. That being said prices are rising a lot for them!
i have one with a 3sge engine ....i hit a guard railing with it tho cosmetic damage only i got all the parts the handling is weird on this car i must say its very sharp
Thanks for sharing friend. So you still drive this car today! You are lucky to have the 3SGE, its a beautiful engine. What part of the world do you live in?
I'm sorry for not replying earlier yet has many notifications I love Ur channel I love in a small country in the Caribbean called the Commonwealth of Dominica aka the nature isle. There are a few more owners of the st206 model here one is even manual @@HobTecCars
@@jardelcharles2180 Wow that is amazing. Looks like a beautiful country, only 72,000 people, but lots of ST206 for you guys! I assume your cars are RHD (right hand drive) even though there is a French influence?
Thanks for the comment, have you a source for that other than forums? I see people claim it in forums, but its omitted from the the original brochures. See here -> www.gtfours.co.uk/stuff/205_brochure/13.jpg It was a colour on the Gen5 and Gen7 Celicas for sure though.
Hello, channel author! in our group we saw your video, we are from Russia. We own the cars that are in this video. If you need more information, I'm ready to send. I have this car and it’s parked under my window, and there are 130+ owners of this car in our group.
Thanks for the comment. I hope you didn't mind me using the footage. I credited everyone in the video description. I was amazed how much of a following there are of the CURREN in Russia. 😊
