I am homeless, In Sarasota.. getting burned by the sun in 2023. Hour after hour it gets warmer and warm, i am considering getting some more… panhandling by the sea.
Thank you so much great video. Didn't know hardly any of this. I lived there from age 4 and grew up there. And I love Sarasota. We always went to the Ringling museum on field trips. Don't know how many times I've been there with the school. I'm sure half a dozen
I thought there was a line , Mile after Mile I love it more and more I just adore that Lido shore. Went to Lido every April for a week or two , drove down from Massachusetts. My grandfather rented a room downtown. We would rent a cottage across from the beach. Too bad there are no pictures of the casino and pool and the towers If I were rich I would have a Winter home there and a Summer home in York Beach ME. my two favorite places . Went to Morrisons (I believe) for dinner.
How very cool! MA boy here too.... Grew up summering in York Beach! Lots of family there going back to the 50s!... Moved to Sarasota 4 years ago. So, life is York when we visit in the Summer, Siesta and Lido in the "endless Summer" the rest of the year 😉
I was born here grew up here remember when they tore up the bricks from Maine street and they were used as land fill out off 17 th st. I think where they eventually opened Happs before it moved from down town my older brother got his first MC from Hap motorcycle down town
They had summer sessions where we would hang out in the cafetorium and then go on a school bus to Sun-N-Fun for swimming lessons and arts&crafts. Gave our moms a much-needed break I guess haha! I earned a life-saver certificate at the pool!
I did 1st thru 5th grade here...1963 to 1968. I remember the JFK assassination announced while in Mrs Lottridge's classroom. Third grade I had Tilly Coe. Fourth grade L.L.Parker
In 1954, my mother was definitely having fun in Sarasota, www.heraldtribune.com/news/20180202/his-mother-only-woman-to-ever-escape-sarasota-county-jail?fbclid=IwAR0sEynamXw1MOuJVkyHYkD-LxEUBj7vk6qMV8WN2PPT0iWFWGxoIa883uI
I lived in Sarasota during the 1950s (from the age of 8 to 13) and practically lived on Lido Beach. I have very fond memories of the beach and casino. I have a few photos with my mom and brother on the beach there. Thanks to all who worked to preserve the memories of the Lido Beach Casino.
My grandmother was a Smack’s Girl. I have the cutest picture of her in that same outfit and saddle oxfords. Thanks to this video, I now know what the “S” was for, as the rest of the restaurant name isn’t in the photo.
This song was played at closing time every night at a "hole-in-the-wall" gay bar called Stingers located on the NW corner of 1st and Central. After "last call" and you knew it was time to duck out before all of the overhead lights would be switched on. Stingers was located in downtown - walking distance from the other gay bar called "The Upper Deck". Back in the early 80's when I was newly "out" at the age of 16 with my older brother's New College ID as insurance if I got carded. The building was demolished in the mid-90's, sadly. I still have a couple of packs of match books I saved. The phone number listed on the cover of the match book is: 366-5878. No area code needed to be dialed for local calls in those days.
Why do the Northamercan commentaries seem to come from a homosexual? They all do and it does make for a good comeback. It also dimishes the value of the documentary.
Let me offer you some free advice… Please learn how to write using proper grammar. Please learn how to form a coherent thought using proper sentence structure and punctuations. Please learn how to use spellcheck. It really “diminishes the value” of your ignorant hateful comment when you come off sounding like a total fucking dumb ass!
Visited the Casino many times during Lido Biltmore stays as a kid. Still go to Lido Beach every year - the guys at the current snack bar make an awesome cheeseburger!
Wonderful video-thanks for all the work and dedication-can't wait for the Historic Homes Tour on March 2 in Laurel Park-many people will get to look at the Fountain then.
Great video -- a lot of work and dedication to get this accomplished. What a fantastic tribute to Don Smally. The community will not be the same without him.
