By 1933, Southside and the rest of the city's schools were closed for lack of money. Only those students who could afford tuition were allowed to return. Enterprising students developed money-making schemes. Coat hangers and cola bottles were collected, and odd jobs were sought.

They had summer sessions where we would hang out in the cafetorium and then go on a school bus to Sun-N-Fun for swimming lessons and arts&crafts. Gave our moms a much-needed break I guess haha! I earned a life-saver certificate at the pool!

Graduated 5th grade at Southside in '91 !! Best playground in the city at the time lol

I did 1st thru 5th grade here...1963 to 1968. I remember the JFK assassination announced while in Mrs Lottridge's classroom. Third grade I had Tilly Coe. Fourth grade L.L.Parker
