Thanks - I truly love the form factor. Just wish it held up better. The new version has ripstop in it - so I am planning to get it and do a comparison review. Thanks for following and liking.
With your last name you might already know, but in Dutch gravel and grind are two (pretty similar) sizes of small rocks. Deep grind is not beginner friendly though. 😅
I know - we even road the route the weekend before and there was a fully functional gravel road at that spot. LOL. But … life is full of surprises. The Grind was a play on coffee - but after that weekend - i think it better suites our gearboxes. 😀
Haha, pretty much. On the rare occasions when i went bush riding with mates,id always try let someone else lead the pack...they are my big cobweb remover 😂,my bowling ball...if a pack of 10 comes the other way lol...an they can also be useful for gauging the water crossing depths 😅
Great summary thank you. The whole time I'm watching I'm wondering "Can my Gen 1 KLR do this?" I think the answer is the bike would not have a problem, the rider may be exhausted by the end.
Spot on. The single track trails are crossed by two tracks quite a bit, which was really nice because as soon as we got tired, we just popped on a two track until we built up our energy and then pop back on another single track. I wouldn’t hesitate taking a first gen KLR.
Custer’s Family Campground. It was fair priced, had a shower house and restaurant. Nothing fancy. You would have loved it . Maybe not the single track - but for sure day 2
Rev it has a newer version that is much more robust and has pockets for armor as well as a big front belly pocket. It is the same basic pullover style but more of an adv jacket and not just a rain overcoat. The downside is that it is bulkier and doesn't pack down as nicely. It's a trade off I guess.
Had a set of these, they did fine on the first day on smooth single track. The 2nd day I went about 2 miles on a whooped out trail and the front strap's mounting "square" tore away from the bag Kinda forgot they were there I guess. Bags mounted on a 300 XC, riding at my usual "B" rider desert 80% race pace on the pipe and skipping the tops of the whoops with about 4 pounds in each bag when it happened. Clearly I asked way too much of them. Such a shame as they are still all pretty shiny and new, and in the trash can as I write this. I really like the layout with two compartments and the bags and their zippers are well made. Beefier strapping and mounting system would be good for morons like me who haul ass and hope they will somehow stay attached to the bike though, or I could just slow down some when using panniers 😆
What a bummer - great feedback. I have yet had a rear bag set that handles aggressive riding, whoops, trees, etc. The bouncing of the weight loosens the straps enough to end up with rubbing and rips, or far enough out of placement to snag on everything around me. These are pretty much only worth it for light DS /ADV riding. Look close enough and you will see my attachment straps have been re-sewn at least twice from tears and rips. I guess I should have commented on that :(
great review, almonst noone talks about his personal experence in the reviews I saw. I live in Sicily and here the temperature go from very low to very very high. Thanks for sharing.
Impressed with Knox. I never heard or considered them before. So can you insert the Knox CE2 armor in the Action Pro Shirt? Does it form fit? Thanks for review.
Yes. That is what I did. I upgraded the armor to the CE2 in my shirt. They have an abrasion resistant shirt as well if you want more road riding protection.
What's your opinion on the classic protectors like the Leatt 6.6 etc? I find mine comfy when riding but super annoying for stops and taking on and off. But with this Knox jacket, I'd be worried about impact protection, especially around the chest
Great question and definitely a dilemma. I use both - but differently. For basic ADV & Light DS riding I use the Action Pro Shirt with the upgraded armor and the Knox Chest Protector and feel comfortable with that as impact protection now that I added the chest insert. It is as pretty similar comparison to the Leatt ReaFlex Stealth shirt. ------Puncture prevention still makes me nervous though - so when riding in the woods where puncture is a concern, or soft dirt where I need to slide and not stick to the ground - then the hard shell Roost Protector is still my go to. In the summer wearing a roost protector and the shirt is just to hot and I will shift to elbow and shoulder pads, but in the winter months - the blend of the shirt with the armor keeps me toasty and safe. Unfortunately there is no good slide/puncutre/impact/breathable/ADV to Single track protection product. Mix, Match, and Ride.
I am happy with my REV'IT! Cyclone 3 H2O Rain Jacket (hi vis). The neck is a little tight. For $60, I can't complain. It fits over my Klim Dakar jacket. I also have the pants and I use them at work when it rains.
I checked it out on Rev’It’s website and it says they’re made with ripstop now. $180, but currently out of stock for all sizes except medium. And they only had 2 left of those. Great review! Think I’ll get one when they make more.
The Urban Pro MK3. It has slide protection built in. www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/knox-urbane-pro-mk3-armored-shirt It never really made sense to me - but I find using their thin base layer helps does help keep me a little cooker despite the extra fabric.
Great and detailed review, I’m just a road rider and can’t decide whether to go the action shirt or urban pro. Which way would you recommend to go, basically go under my leather jacket?
Road the Swinging Bridges in central Missouri with a few buddies on DR 650's. Did the Smokie Mtn 500 last spring and the Tunica through Arkansas TAT in 2021. Also do an annual touring ride out of the Perryville area into central Missouri. Just convinced one of those street riding buddies to buy a DS bike and now looking to find some good dual sport rides near southeastern Missouri. We are out of the Edwardsville area and Southern Illinois looks interesting, but always prefer Missouri. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Hey - I have several tracks in that area if interested- I am helping with an event last weekend in April called cabin fever which will have several loops. Also check out Adventure Palooza held in April. I usually have the gpx files on my webpage- but removed several while I rework them. Feel free to reach out directly steve@314adv.com and I can get you some stuff. Also - consider joining out FB group 314ADV - we do group rides in that area if interested.
@314adv your not stupid it has to be properly buffed (remove said bumps) , then it has to be cleaned , then you can use either a hot or cold glue and tech two way patch, I sent you a fb message of the brand and company that sells what you need !
I would call this a casual “rally book” navigation style solution. I have used it a couple times without real issue when with friends - but I would not consider this a race ready solution. To ensure you always get the right button - you would really want individual physical buttons.
@@314adv thanks for your reply. They sell those buttons on aliexpress but no Bluetooth . Maybe this Bluetooth controller can be attached to those buttons. Maybe, not sure…
Yup - this is an Annual ride every May. There are several annual rides each year in MO (Cabin Fever, Adventure Palooza, Middle of the Map, Ozark 200/500, and Falling Leaves) and a ton in Arkansas (Natural State Escape, Rally at the Rock, and more i cant remember. Pretty much any riding south of I-44 in MO is pretty darn fun.
