Without watching this video I’m guessing that Dave or whatever his name is opens the consumer unit door and presses the test button where he sees one. The device trips and off camera he provides Mrs.Miggins with a handwritten invoice and takes £37.99 of her for services rendered and then get in a white transit and spends the cash in a local massage parlour and throws the receipt in the bin. Also at 1:02 he says if the device doesn’t trip he’ll be happy to help. What this translates to in trade speak is “ I’ll be happy to rewire your bungalow for £15k, I can start it now I’ve got some rolls of twin and skin on the trannie outside, me and Robbie’ll get this place shipshape before you can say “ that’s me life savings down the swanny!” “ Edit: Ok I’m back his name wasn’t Dave but something similar like Mick. Yes low and behold just as I predicted, I should become a sooth sayer. Just because the device trips doesn’t mean it works it just means the tripping operation created internally for tripping the device works. It has zero bearing on if it’s gonna trip if your in the bath with an electric fire. Watch this RU-vid short of a Thai guy touching the live wire coming from an earth leakage device an prove they don’t always trip as intended in a real world scenario. You here him say “ Mai Dat “ with translates to “ not Cut “ as he goes in for another go. ru-vid.comkzHW-B2g_Og? You’ve got to admire the Thai guy money is tight out here in Southeast Asia and they can’t afford electronic RCD testers so this is how they have to do the testing so they can tick ‘ tested ‘ off on the sheet.
My mate (who's a bit close to a pound) asked me to check the light in his brand new refitted bathroom because the light stopped working. They've been using camping lanterns for weeks! I found one of the pins in the bulb holder had disintegrated. Trouble is the entire fitting is so old they don't make them anymore and it requires replacing the whole thing not just the holder and the two connecting wires. I took one look at the mass of wires coming out of the ceiling and thought 'Na, pay some money and get a qualified sparks in I'm a DIY'er FFS!'
Same here, and currently it turns on when it’s off… but know we missed putting the reds in the loop. Gonna have to guess some more about the black wires but at least earth is working!
Depends on a few things to be checked first, when extending any circuits it is recommended that you consult your local electrician, that is something which requires you to be qualified.
Great vid, about to do this with a 40 year old rose so imagine cables will be arse wise with the colours - i'll let you know how i get on - after the light switch and dual gang plug to dual gang plug with USB - if you don't hear from me again - it didn't work!! But hey great vid and subscribed! Thanks
Can you kindly explain what the rose screws on to? My ceiling rose is hanging loose from the ceiling and I can't seem to find a bracket that I can use to screw on to.
Hi Haduiz The ceiling rose would usually screw directly to the ceiling. The appropriate fixings will be needed depending on the ceiling type. Hope this helps
If a neutral and earth were wired incorrectly, then would that be identified? What issue would that cause? Would the earth act as neutral or trip an RCD?
I wish you had the camera attatched to your forhead then i would be able to see what your seeing. I have no idea from this video im basically watching a man wire a light than actually learning how to fit it. Cut your face out and point the camera more to the light wires
My new pendant from IKEA only has a little connector to connect the live and neutral wire? How do I connect that up with the other wires in the ceiling rose?
I’ve got the ceiling rose like the one your using, with the blue and brown wires, I’ve got the old style black and red wires hanging out the ceiling. Do I connect the red and black wires to the ceiling rose bit that has the other wires in?
There are too many people that won't take a chance as they're dead scared with electricity. Also it's a good thing to pass on knowledge, we're not going to take it with us after all. ;-)))
Thank you for your feedback, simple tasks like this can be carried out by anyone, we would rather that they did it safely as we see many dangers. That is the point of the videos.
Totally agree. Videos like this are so so useful. I showed me not to muck about with my light fitting as it was not as easy as I thought. Don't think the guy will be short of work, people are waiting months around here for one. Top guy, thanks very much

jimmy Hard Nails You'll have 3 wires (feeds and switchline). Identify the switchline and mark it because you don't want to mix the switchline up with the feeds. Strip all 3 cables which will give you 3 neutrals (blue), 3 lives (brown) and 3 earths (no sleeving). Find the neutral from you switchwire (the one you should have marked) and grab some brown sleeving or brown tape and put it on the neutral wire from your switchline which indicates that the neutral is a permanent live. Put that in the live terminal. That should leave you with 2 neutrals, 3 lives and 3 earths. Put earth sleeving on all the earths and put them in the earth block. Then put all 3 lives in the live terminals (the 3 in the middle) which will leave you with 2 neutrals which you put in the 2 neutral terminals (the 2 on the left side). Thats that, done. Pendants are really really easy when you know what you're doing, I'm 18 and have only been doing electrics for 6 months and I can do them in my sleep :)
I forgot to add that you will only have 2 cables in your pendant if the light is the last point in the circuit. It's exactly the same process except you will only have 2 lives, 2 earths and 1 neutral and 1 permanent live. Also if the wiring is old colours, its still exactly the same process except your live will be red and neutral black.
Hi there, I am sorry I don't know what is available in your country I am afraid but with access to the internet you should be able to find anything you need. Good Luck. Mark.
Hi there, this would be a case of fault finding, to locate the fault and rectify. I will try to get a video out on this for you. Check back soon and thank you for your request.
