I’ve got the ceiling rose like the one your using, with the blue and brown wires, I’ve got the old style black and red wires hanging out the ceiling. Do I connect the red and black wires to the ceiling rose bit that has the other wires in?
My new pendant from IKEA only has a little connector to connect the live and neutral wire? How do I connect that up with the other wires in the ceiling rose?
Can you kindly explain what the rose screws on to? My ceiling rose is hanging loose from the ceiling and I can't seem to find a bracket that I can use to screw on to.
Hi Haduiz The ceiling rose would usually screw directly to the ceiling. The appropriate fixings will be needed depending on the ceiling type. Hope this helps

Depends on a few things to be checked first, when extending any circuits it is recommended that you consult your local electrician, that is something which requires you to be qualified.
jimmy Hard Nails You'll have 3 wires (feeds and switchline). Identify the switchline and mark it because you don't want to mix the switchline up with the feeds. Strip all 3 cables which will give you 3 neutrals (blue), 3 lives (brown) and 3 earths (no sleeving). Find the neutral from you switchwire (the one you should have marked) and grab some brown sleeving or brown tape and put it on the neutral wire from your switchline which indicates that the neutral is a permanent live. Put that in the live terminal. That should leave you with 2 neutrals, 3 lives and 3 earths. Put earth sleeving on all the earths and put them in the earth block. Then put all 3 lives in the live terminals (the 3 in the middle) which will leave you with 2 neutrals which you put in the 2 neutral terminals (the 2 on the left side). Thats that, done. Pendants are really really easy when you know what you're doing, I'm 18 and have only been doing electrics for 6 months and I can do them in my sleep :)
I forgot to add that you will only have 2 cables in your pendant if the light is the last point in the circuit. It's exactly the same process except you will only have 2 lives, 2 earths and 1 neutral and 1 permanent live. Also if the wiring is old colours, its still exactly the same process except your live will be red and neutral black.
Great vid, about to do this with a 40 year old rose so imagine cables will be arse wise with the colours - i'll let you know how i get on - after the light switch and dual gang plug to dual gang plug with USB - if you don't hear from me again - it didn't work!! But hey great vid and subscribed! Thanks
My mate (who's a bit close to a pound) asked me to check the light in his brand new refitted bathroom because the light stopped working. They've been using camping lanterns for weeks! I found one of the pins in the bulb holder had disintegrated. Trouble is the entire fitting is so old they don't make them anymore and it requires replacing the whole thing not just the holder and the two connecting wires. I took one look at the mass of wires coming out of the ceiling and thought 'Na, pay some money and get a qualified sparks in I'm a DIY'er FFS!'
There are too many people that won't take a chance as they're dead scared with electricity. Also it's a good thing to pass on knowledge, we're not going to take it with us after all. ;-)))
Thank you for your feedback, simple tasks like this can be carried out by anyone, we would rather that they did it safely as we see many dangers. That is the point of the videos.
Totally agree. Videos like this are so so useful. I showed me not to muck about with my light fitting as it was not as easy as I thought. Don't think the guy will be short of work, people are waiting months around here for one. Top guy, thanks very much
