Hi, my name is Cynthia and I am a storyteller at heart, an avid blogger, a self-taught videographer, a bite-sized video aficionada, a bespoke wedding movie-maker, and a video production company owner.
My journey started in 2011 when with no financial assistance and absolutely zero experience in the field, I conceptualized, filmed and edited KICKIN’ IT WITH THE KINKS, a documentary about the love and hate relationship that women from the African descent have with their hair. To this day, it has been screened in the UK, US, Canada, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Nigeria, Zambia, Namibia and Rwanda. Not long after that achievement of a milestone, the subsequent video blog I created also garnered praise from high places as at October 2013. The platform received the Award for Best Blog of The Year by the BEFFTA (Black Entertainment, Fashion, Film, Television and Arts).
My RU-vid channel is a mishmash of everything I do. Hope you will enjoy the trip.
Started to watch but couldn't relate. My hair is locs and before that natural. I went to the hair dresser for the first time in years for a change as I normally do it myself.
This documentary was great until you got to ol girl at the 31:00 mark. She has no clue and she's spewing a bunch of anti-American bs. Black American's are not grasping for anything.
Natural african American women can look feminine soft ladylike and beautiful. However African American women that wear huge wigs and weaves can look like drag queens and shemales.
We’ve all been brainwashed!! Men and women. I’ve been loc’d forever… love it, and maintenance for my really spiraled hair is almost nonexistent. No cost! 😊 And I get compliments everyday! Took a while to figure out how to care for it… cause my mom didn’t know, she wore wigs. My grandma was bald. I think it was chemicals that caused it. Now that relaxers are linked with cancer people may think twice!! It is not normal to want to wear someone else’s hair…! PS My hair is also naturally gray!! 😀 Hang around people who love the real you!! We all need positive feedback 😊
Beautiful documentary. I am embracing my natural hair texture. This journey has been a beautiful one so far for me. Thank you for this amazing documentary.
I'm so proud of you all to go nature with you hair. Well done. We are making people that don't like us reach by spending lot of money buying extension.
Kunta Kinté is a character representing resistance. African Americans and Black Canadians appreciate naturalness because it’s a symbolism of belonging to the space we’re in and an acknowledgement of our biological selves. I hope that person has come to minimize being a stranger to herself.
sorry gave this a thumbs down @ the 30 mark explains it all. Ain’t no difference black is black! If this one female thinks this way then i feel all she was just the ignorant to say it. was feeling the doc til that part because as much as i disagree that is the mindset of them Great job UK.
Thanks to my daughter in law Keziah Lewis-Thorpe I Michelle Otego Roper not only when back to my natural hair but I also got dreadlocks and loving it, but I like most people made every excuse in the book why going natural is hard to maintain, But my daughter in law pursuing and pursuing convince me to let her put in the dreadlocks extension mother's day 2019 to start my locking process and she took out the dreadlocks extensions on the 25th March 2021, NOW I AM ROCKING MY OWN HAIR AND LOVING IT, TO BE HONEST I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE THAT I HAVE, THE MOST TALENTED AND LOVING DAUGHTER IN LAW IN THIS WORLD, SO SHE TAKES CARE OF MY HAIR FOR ME, But being real it is really going to be hard if we put that mind block on, but if we really really want to do it, we would find ways and means to do it. This is food for thought but especially for my Black African Descendants People Anthony Thorpe Nadine Dowell. A BILLION AND MORE THANKS TO MY DAUGHTER IN LAW KEZIAH 💃🖤🎵💚💕🎂🌹🍾✔️🇹🇹👌🏿👍🏾
As a natural, - I spend $0.00 at the salon each year. - $35 per year on shampoo. - $20 per year on deep conditioner. - ~$30 per year on various oils and shea butters. Total: ~$80 per year on natural hair products. I spend around 5 hours per week washing, gently finger detangling, and styling my natural hair. My hair is very thick and growing long. Total hours spent maintaining my natural hair per year: ~260 hrs. There are 168 hours in 1 week. There are 8,760 hours in a year. Consider spending ~$2300+ dollars per year on weaves, sew-ins, and this doesn't include relaxers. Also consider the hours it takes to maintain and sit for 8+ hours for install regularly. The health of the hair is also damaged during this process. Things to think about! 🌼
The girl at 30:17 with the gold scarf is looking at that girl like "Oh really?" She knew what she was saying was messed up, and she tuned her out for the rest of the conversation 🤣
its only Africans that are angry about what they have evolved to be... since it's hair that is their problem today.. lets discuss it, "ITS NOT YOUR HAIR" the lady should have responded back, & SOOO??? I am as black as black can be! if I choose to have blonde straight extensions, thats my business. & if I choose to go natural (which I am today.. also my business. STOP BLAMING WHITE PEOPLE FOR YOUR INSECURITIES ABOUT YOURSELF. No white person walked up to you and told you to do your hair in a certain way, YOU CHOSE THAT LOOK... F*@KIN TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS!!!!
What do you mean by natural hair? Aren't you proud to say: I have curly hair that you have to use another word (natural) in this case? Natural really means: not artificial.
I just think as a black women , we need to love ourselves first, stop trying to fit in. After all this is the hair that grows out of scalp its beautiful
I love a head of beautiful voluminous 4c natural hair and hate people being made to feel so uncomfortable in their own skin. Society sh!ts me to tears.
Interesting film. I disagree with he lady who wore a yellow T shirt stating black hair is the weakest and dry automatically. Is so off. So many of us lack the insight of loving our natural hair. I been natural for 20 years its liberating.
I think it is sad to see that some people really think that natural hair has to look "neat" to be presentable. I myself have my afro out almost every day, it is way less time consuming than all of the weave, braids, relax and such. My afro is beautiful, messy and also a lot more comfortable.
Root 2Tip girl is incorrect on a few facts. Black hair does not grow the slowest. All hair grows the same each month. Typically about 1 inch per month. The problem is the 1 fact that she mentioned that she did get correct is our hair is weaker. Because our hair is weaker, it is harder to retain its length. Our hair grows no slower than any other hair on this earth. We are just prone to more breakage. You have to take care of it to retain its length and health.
I just found this video and I enjoyed your documentary immensely. I wear my hair natural, weaves and flat ironed. I am more of a natural hair wearer and I advocate for all friends and family to wear their hair natural, natural hair is freedom to me.
The lady in the wig shop has no concept about black hair, black hair is strong and will grow much faster than most hair if we wouldn't put all those harmful chemicals she was selling in her shop, try Sister locks sista🤣
So insecure creating a whole documentary on black hair like for one it's a waste of money and two no one cares just the people with the insecurity so go away
White woman have many hair issues as well. My hair was always straight and to flat. I always got perms to make my hair more full. Just keep in mind ladies ,whether you are Black , White , Asian or Indian we all have hair issues. Yes their are some fortunate people who are blessed with just great hair , but they are not the majority, That is why the hair industry is so prosperous.
@愛HiImAmii I am so sorry , I did not realize this was a segregated video. Can you imagine if I said the statement you just made to a woman of color who just trying to say , I can relate ,but just in the opposite way. No worries though, it wouldn't even cross my mind to do so. Have a wonderful blessed day.
