I use to wear cotton all the time and never knew why was so cold. Granted in the begining after 20+ yrs of riding I found that i had good caring family members and they would present me gifts at xmas and would be fleece or insulated thermal etc.
Why did Osprey replace all of the heavy duty plastic buckles with much flimsier buckles on their new packs? I just bought an Osprey Atmos AG 50 at REI for $315 (July 2024). I like the pack, but what is the advantage of the flimsy plastic buckles? Gregory still uses the heavy duty plastic. The weight difference couldn't be more than an ounce; did they really save lots of money? Also Osprey replaced the strong elastic cords that hold the hiking poles (as shown in your video) with much flimsier cords that will break after a few years. I've had an Osprey Stratos 36 and my wife has had a Sirrus 24 for ten years. They are great packs (and they both came with built in rain covers). Why the quality downgrade on the new Osprey packs? Did this happen after the company founder sold to Helen of Troy in 2021?
I'm 5'10 and 160 pounds - do you think I should go for a M or L. I would personally want it to be an athletic fit but not be restrictive, mobility wise. Thanks!
We are going on an Alaskan cruise in June with what I’m told is going to require waterproof layers. The weather is rainy, since that area is considered rainforest. We will be hiking. Which jacket would you recommend? I want breathable, dry, not bulky and longevity. I’m not opting for the PFC free.
I bought the Men's Atom hoody in a size small (I'm 5'7", 140 lbs) and it's disappointing compared to my Wife's Atom hoody from 5 years ago (named the Atom LT hoody at the time). I noticed instantly the material felt thinner and cheaper. The fit of the new Atom is also very boxy and I would not consider it "fitted" at all. I have an older Beta shell in size XS which I find can be tight in some spots so I ordered the Atom in size S, which turned out to be quite roomy. I definitely could have fit an XS and it still probably wouldn't be "fitted". The fit of Arc'teryx overall seems to have become boxier which is quite disappointing. I used to be a big fan of Arc'teryx gear but will have to reconsider ordering any more gear from them due to their decline in quality, unpredictable sizing and fit, and poor customer service.
Was thinking about getting something lighter than my Aether 65 but, NO. I love the Aether because you can get in from bottom, top and front. It's a bit heavier but with a Load range 30 - 60 lbs, you know you get the stability.
Thx for all the reviews on the new Beta, Beta SL, Beta ARs, I couldn't find any other useful reviews on the new 2024 models. It's really nice to hear about the length, this helps me a tonne. I thought the AR might be nicer than the SL because of the durability and improved hood, but it seems that the hood is actually not that nice and the length is so short. Not good for me :) 185cm.. So I guess I'll go with SL again!
@@juice132 it’s really hard to tell based on the website. Probably more durable but I don’t see anything justifying the plus version unless it’s a colour you want
@@WillFaulkner Thanks for the reply. I use a RAB Phantom rain jacket now which keeps me surprisingly dry but I don't like that the outer shell gets drenched. Might have to live with it for portability though.
When you put on Beta AR jacket, I am sure you sometimes use the hoody. Does it happen to get blown off when you go downhill at a high speed? Do you think I should go with a storm hood version instead of the drop hood one? Since I like the look of drop hood and I have a Beta LT, so I kind of don't want to buy another Beta jacket with a storm hood.
@@juice132 if I winch in the hood it will stay up when I ride. I don’t know if a different hood is worth buying another jacket unless your balling with money loll
@@KingFozzie1 yea for me it’s about 8kg. If it’s mostly clothing your fine. It’s electronics and shoes that weigh alot. However I don’t think airlines care much about carry on weigh. It’s usually more a size issue and they generally target suitcases
Outstanding Review! Your very thorough review was information dense, well spoken, fair & balanced, detailed and informative. I appreciate your thoughts and efforts in producing an excellent product review. I liked your side by side comparison of you wearing 2 different Arc'teryx jackets while putting your hands above your head & moving; great visual comparison. I also appreciated your thoughts on sizing. Thanks Will!
Hi @willfaulkner If you were to choose between the beta 2023 vs 2024, which would it be? Is the 80d compared to previous 30d really a big deal when it comes to durability?
Great review, thanks! It's funny though, here in Sweden the Canadian Goose jackets are (or atleast were) considered to be THE premium winter jacket brand. Fjällräven has obviously had a great marketing campaign internationally to reach this brand recognition. They are also quite popular here in Sweden, although they're at least as expensive here as they seem to be in Canada. When us swedes that are now in our middle age we're growing up in the early '80's, pretty much everyone had a Fjällräven backpack to school (the model called Kånken) and it was not at all considered as premium as they are now. I'd say at least three out of four kids came to school in a Fjällräven Kånken (perhaps it was not as popular in southern Sweden as it were in the north, though. Fjällräven is made in Örnsköldsvik, a northern city) Keep up the good work!
I got a couple questions, hope you can answer. How often does it needs to be dwr compared to the old one? Is the new 40 - 70 for the beta lightweight more durable than the 30d non epo?
I just tried this jacket on in the store and quite liked it for the features. I didn't love the fit of my body (tall, slender but curvy female medium build), and tend to wear really oversized garments, of what would be considered the "correct" size for me and actually found the best size was the men's XL. At this size, it looked very fashionable. The sleeves however were VERY long, as you mention, but you can use the velcro at the wrists and have a sort of ruched effect where the fabric gathers. It's not the look for everyone, but it worked for me. However, I have two questions: is there a comparable lightweight jacket with similar features at a lower pricepoint that you would recommend? AND: can you recommend a good resource for learning about how and when to re-proof a water resistant jacket after wear? Thanks so much!
Also, my main use of the jacket would be for dog walking, walking around the city (thus the lightweight and armpit zips are great for dealing with transitions from outdoors to indoors) and hiking.
In terms reapplying dwr, it’s really baes on when you notice the jacket isn’t beading water. I’ll usually notice it on the shoulders or arms and just spot treat if they aren’t beading in this areas
I got a 65LT. One point about holding trekking poles is that they can be twisted into the ice axe loops and held tight with the top strap. It’s not convenient to move them on the go but it’s very secure- you’ll never lose them
this video had too many ads, and you made 10 minutes plus for RU-vid ad revenue, could be a 3 minute video. I think if you make more compact videos it will help with your subscriber count. To summarize and save you time: Likes linen Doesn't like thick jeans Likes wool Use packing cubes
Are you using it for downhill skiing? Generally a Columbia jacket will do just fine unless you are doing something that requires specialized equipment.
Those type of sandals are a disaster waiting to happen. I've seen too many people with damage, cuts etc on the front of their feet as most 3rd world countries don't have good footpaths etc.
My main question is; if the revised beta has a 80d construction throughout, wouldn’t that make it more durable against general wear and outdoor use compared to the AR’s 40/80?
There is nothing surprising about the fall of Arcteryx. I’ve already heard from several friends about the decline in quality in their equipment. And the huge number of fakes only makes the situation worse
