Just a normal dude who fly fishes. Not great at it, but I love it and want to share it with others. Spend most weekends with a fly rod I pretend to know how to use, and catch fish in spite of myself.
I spend most of my time fishing streams in and around Eastern Kentucky for smallmouth, largemouth, hybrid striped bass, panfish, and rainbow, brook and brown trout.
I fish this a lot. I never have much luck with decent fish usually chubs lol. Have a property just down the road from there. The trick seems to be catch it fight after they stock.
@@606OnTheFlyIt’s crazy low right now. I’ll be there this weekend may have to check it out in some other areas. Few other streams near by I need to check out. Had good luck at the lake with the fly last week for how hot it was.
@@606OnTheFly appreciate your reply thanks . I’m going to need to beef up my gear . Think I heard you say you use 8-10 lb fluorocarbon . I have 4 lb and a lot of trout gear .
Hey man just stumbled across your channel and I really enjoy it. I’m thinking of taking a trip to the red river gorge, which of the creeks would you think would give me my best chance at a brookie?
Brook trout in there are very tough. I’ve caught a handful, but there’s really no creek that seems to hold them over. Best shot is to find them after they’ve freshly stocked
What's the difference between a creek, and a crik? A crik has more tires in it. 😄 That reminds me of the creeks I used to fish in MO. I wish I was into fly fishing then, but I wasn't. I fished them with ultralight gear. They had so many longears and smallies in them it was hard to not catch anything. Largemouth as well, but they weren't as common.
I remember reading somewhere they used the walleye from the Rockcastle river as brood stock to reintroduce walleye to waters they had been historically.
Ive fished that creek a few times. hidden gem for sure when they stock. If you ever want to chase some trout together, i live in lexington and fish all around.
One of the best places to start is fish and wildlife’s website, pick the county you’re in and they show access points to the creeks, rivers and lakes in your county. Can find some gems there
Try a hopper dropper or oros indicator so you can see more strikes. I’m in western Kentucky, and we get a lot of the same hatchery fish, and they eat bright nymphs like it’s their last meal.
Very sentimental place for me right there. Me and my Grandpa spent a lot of time together in that same spot. He passed away last year, weve actually scattered some his ashes around the area along with all his other favorite places
Great fishing in the gorge. I live about 15 minutes from the gorge itself. I know that place like the back of my hand. Ive caught several species outta the beautiful red river.
@@606OnTheFly your in for some good fishing most of anywhere but the red River is better for just fishing for whatever species. The Indian creek side is great for trout tho. In the Red River I've caught 2 very nice 38 in and 40 in muskies. Small mouth are everywhere so you should have some great luck.
The most beautiful place on earth for me I remember going 10 miles walking deep deep back in those woods catching monster trout everyday with my cousin skipping across those rocks taking a bath in it sleeping birds chirping the smell water coming off the rocks the most beautiful place on earth to me when I die I want my ashes to thrown into the cranberry river it doesn't get no better for me no stresssssss no worriessssss just you mother nature at peaceeee❤❤❤❤❤❤
I believe the eagle claw featherlight is a good rod for the money and you can never go wrong with a scientific anglers line. Reel it's not dispensable and flies are up ti you. Great video by the way.
I would like to come and fish with you sometime. I live in Northern Kentucky and can be at most of the places where you in fish in under 2.5 hours. I don't see that you have a business email on RU-vid, and it is not a good idea to give our information on the comments.
February Hatchery Creek is winding down. Especially with this warmer weather we have. I wouldn’t recommend fishing in the summer. The carpet grass makes the creek virtually unfishable. I’m one of the few that fishing here using a spinning rod and I’m constantly putting the hurt on them. Always have 1 18+” and several nice ones.
I don’t remember exactly when I went last time but it was completely grassed up. It’s awesome you do well down there, it’s humbled me the few times I’ve been
I honestly don’t know too much about it. I know it’s basically the outflow for the water the hatchery uses for Cumberland. Kentucky Afield did a video on it when they built it in 2016 or so I’ll try to find it
It was good to meet you too, I was thinking yesterday as I left I didn’t even get your name. I’m hoping to make coming down there a more frequent thing. You’ll have to show me how to actually fish that creek
Good video, glad yall had some luck.👊👍 I fished down there about 3 weeks ago and caught several. The creek fishes better when it's up & slightly stained. #12 & #14 pheasant tails, hairs ear nymphs, scuds, rainbow warriors & #18 zebra midges. When it's really up & somewhat muddy, drifting streamers works really well. The warmer it gets the algae is a big problem and fishing sucks. Probably one of the best campgrounds(Kendal) in Ky if you want to stay multiple days.
I really appreciate the tips! It’s a bit of a haul for us so it’s kind of a when we have the time situation, but getting my first fish out of there has me wanting to go back a lot more often
I love muskie and fly fishing bc the names are so iconic yet so odd to outsiders. "I was plumping the ol bumble ball on a butter stick and COPPER JOHN came a RUNNING lookin for a Jake or grandma! Told him figure 8 that ernie or I'd bust his wooly bugger all over with a 3 weight orvis til his backing showed!"
Oh, I always fish multi-species, its harder to get skunked that way. I usually bring two rods with various flys to add diversity to my fishing/channel. Then again I fish for fun and my videos are not for subs, but just because I love to share my journey, it takes the pressure off getting videos/ content out and keeps fishing from becoming a job or chore. Just have fun and people like me will watch if they want.
That’s a good way to look at it. I did move a lot on this trip I just didn’t share it. The issues here are low water, and erratic weather. Hopefully soon I’ll find some more time to make some trips. This place is just close to home and I’m able to hit it quite often
I don't have the same issue at all. If I'm not catching anything after 20 casts I'll do one of two things or both. Change flys or move spots. I have an Orvis 8wt, Orvis 5wt, and a 2wt Redington Butterstick. The Butterstick is by far my favorite and I catch the most with it. Although, I usually only fish if its 45F + if fishing for Bluegill, Crappie, and Bass. Trout fishing is different. I am no expert at fishing for trout, but when I trout fished Trout in Arkansas, the water stayed close to the same temp all year round because of the speed the water was moving enough to maintain temp coming out of the damn. I don't know your water temp, air temp, barometric pressure, cloud cover, and seeing only 2 or three of you videos I've only seen you fish that same stretch or river. Maybe the fish there are pressured from overfishing? I am constantly moving when I fly fish. I only stick to a spot if its producing fish. Even then I move after a time to not overpressure that spot. Sorry for the paragraph, I love fly fishing and would love to see you succeed!
