This was my 2nd ever trip to Hatchery Creek at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery near Lake Cumberland. The fishing was tough, but a few fish made it more than worth my while. Fly fishing in February can be tough, however it is well worth the trip!

Try a hopper dropper or oros indicator so you can see more strikes. I’m in western Kentucky, and we get a lot of the same hatchery fish, and they eat bright nymphs like it’s their last meal.

February Hatchery Creek is winding down. Especially with this warmer weather we have. I wouldn’t recommend fishing in the summer. The carpet grass makes the creek virtually unfishable. I’m one of the few that fishing here using a spinning rod and I’m constantly putting the hurt on them. Always have 1 18+” and several nice ones.

I don’t remember exactly when I went last time but it was completely grassed up. It’s awesome you do well down there, it’s humbled me the few times I’ve been

Good video, glad yall had some luck.👊👍 I fished down there about 3 weeks ago and caught several. The creek fishes better when it's up & slightly stained. #12 & #14 pheasant tails, hairs ear nymphs, scuds, rainbow warriors & #18 zebra midges. When it's really up & somewhat muddy, drifting streamers works really well. The warmer it gets the algae is a big problem and fishing sucks. Probably one of the best campgrounds(Kendal) in Ky if you want to stay multiple days.

I really appreciate the tips! It’s a bit of a haul for us so it’s kind of a when we have the time situation, but getting my first fish out of there has me wanting to go back a lot more often

Love your channel. I am in Corbin area. I fish there frequently. Great to see Hatchery.

I appreciate that! I don’t get a ton of opportunities to get out that way, but every time I do I gain a little bit of confidence fishing it

It was good to meet you too, I was thinking yesterday as I left I didn’t even get your name. I’m hoping to make coming down there a more frequent thing. You’ll have to show me how to actually fish that creek

Best time is after stockings in the spring and fall. Cumberland seems to always produce

@@606OnTheFly appreciate your reply thanks . I’m going to need to beef up my gear . Think I heard you say you use 8-10 lb fluorocarbon . I have 4 lb and a lot of trout gear .

Any idea on the plumbing of that river? kW, lift, GPM.... Never seen something like this.

I honestly don’t know too much about it. I know it’s basically the outflow for the water the hatchery uses for Cumberland. Kentucky Afield did a video on it when they built it in 2016 or so I’ll try to find it

Not an easy creek to fish. The top section is easier. To each their own. Public water.

I view this creek more like a golf course. lol. For me I live very close to here and have to either fish the tailwater there, travel a few hours away, or not fish. It’s good to practice and not get rusty between trips. Also even though they’ll eat anything I do like to test out experimental flies I tie up. It’s good to have it. I’ll probably teach my kids how to fly fish here. A resource yah know?

@@photopersonal9491 a good way to look at it. It’s a long haul for me, just neat learning a new place to fish
