Funky Kong changed because he had to. And he armed his brothers and sisters to keep them safe. That man was willing to go full warlord to save his family. Funky Kong is a damn war hero.
God damn this was a well written video, was a really eye opener and made think in a lot of different perspectives about this mother series and mother 3. Never thought this right now was the future of the mother series really when it was clear. This video really made me respect itoi like never before as well. Him saying “the lives we are living now happy or sad this is mother 4” like heck who else would say something like that like itoi!? Great video, and me really appreciate this series and the creator
Great video! Your bit about the correlation between stoners and gun nuts is something I struggle to get people to understand. But if you know, you know. My dad's a Funky.
thank you so much!! recording my next script here pretty soon :) if you like vids like this, i recommend my Future of Mother video next, or Videogame Intros. Have a lovely day!!
What confuses me about this whole thing: People act like emulators don't exists. You can play Mother 3 using the device you're reading this. The fan translation is excellent. Yes, having an "official" way would lower the hurdle for most people to try that game out. But why do people seem to care so much about this aspect?
I wouldn't say that anyone is acting like emulators don't exist. The only anti-piracy opinions I have seen are from weird, holier-than-thou Iwata Soldiers who will stand against piracy every time Mother 3 trends on Twitter. Following that, you have the crowd of people who say, "Everyone who wants to play Mother 3 has already played it," and then about a thousand think-pieces come out, and ad infinitum until we die. I am pro piracy for every medium, for every property, for everything that anyone wants to use it for--ESPECIALLY when a company like Nintendo isn't offering its full library. But the fact remains that a lot of people won't pirate, don't care to pursue piracy, or simply don't know how and won't be changing that anytime soon. The majority of the gaming world is not you and I, but millions of people whose primary gaming experiences are either curated from Steam or experienced through consoles. People like you and I see piracy as normal, and I've been using emulators since I was 11 years old. But that isn't the norm for most consumers, and I think sometimes the sheer quantity of normal folks who don't pirate games is vastly underestimated by people who've been pirating since before Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts came out. So, for me, removing the hurdle for most people is exactly the reason--why would I not want more people to enjoy a great game? I don't see that as a crazy opinion, nor do I see it as ignoring the existence of emulators. When I read a great book, or see a great movie, I want to share it with people. Good art comforts the disturbed and disturbs the comfortable. I think Mother 3 is good art that deserves all the attention it can potentially muster. Though, I'd say my video totally failed if I wasn't able to answer your question within its run-time, and so for that, I apologize. I was certainly proud of this video when it came out, but my opinion has changed since then. Anyway, for me it comes down to the reason why I was happy when Secret of Mana 3, or Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon, or Final Fantasy 1 and 2 were finally localized. I believe that Mother 3 is a great product that many people would enjoy, and it would make me happy to see it given a mainstream release. I don't think it will ever happen, but the fact of the matter is that a lot of people (especially young people!) expecienced EarthBound for the first time when it came out on the Wii U, and that was awesome to me.
Personal grudge, but the reason why someone opens their mind and end up being alone, is bc they finally saw the world for how dangerous it is, you can continue living, but if you can make your suffering go down, then so what if I don’t talk to people as much as before?
Just found this blog/vlog/pod this week, and I've been starving for a Mother 3 travelogue walkthrough series (was actually considering making one myself) - this is so damn good and hope you keep up with it!!!
You can also use Funky mode to explain why he hates adventures in a different way he's got the most health and all of the abilities of the other Kongs combined maybe he hates them 'cause they're too easy for him?
I didnt expect such ending to a video about a gorilla with sunglasses but i loved it Funkey Kong is Fucking Cool man. One of my favorite side character.
There needs to be a game where Funky Kong has the staring role and to justify it since he hates adventuring, the plot could involve all the Kongs being kidnapped and Funky Kong has no choice but to put aside his dislike of adventuring to save them. It should also bring back the Kremlings as Nintendo STILL seems to hate them despite King K Rool being playable in Ultimate since they replaced the Kritter goalies with Boom Booms in Mario Strikers Battle League.
Another reason for Funky Kong in Tropical Freeze I’ve heard is that freezing the seas of DK Island and the waves that he surfs on would be a fast way of pissing off the most powerful Kong.
Ngl, i only checked out earthbound simply because i just want to see The Beatles’ references in that game, but then i just became really addicted to that game man.
38:34 INHERENT VICE MENTION AUTOMATICALLY 10/10 VIDEO I mean it already is a 10/10 video without the clip but yea holy shit imagine if funky kong was thomas pynchon's inspiration for doc
lol, i originally wrote a much longer section about weed and paranoia and the "Pynchonian Primate" concept but ultimately opted for this version. glad you liked it :)
I really hope they localize Mother 3, despite the fact that 17 years have passed, and STILL no localization..... Although, Mother 3 won't get localized. But I hope it will officially get localized because whenever I try to install the Mother 3 fan translation, my Mac OS just won't let me.... Then again, it's impossible to download ANYTHING on a Mac, so double oof.
46:05 "He's not the same monkey, but he's still Funky." is ironically one of the most beautiful and though provoking lines I have heard. Well done sir.
This was a great video essay about my one of my favorite Kongs in the DKC series! (Dixie is in the Number 1 spot while Funky comes in a very close 2nd!) The hypothesizing you did for DKC2 and why the Kong Family would suddenly be charging for their services lines up with a similar theory that the channel Transparency did for their DKC3 video essay "Dixie Kong's Gender Trouble". I'm not sure if you've seen the video, but it's a great watch! You make a great point about the believability of laidback, pacifist surfer-dude Funky Kong taking a right turn into the wannabe militiaman civilian who stockpiles food rations for the "impending apocalypse" and has more military-grade assault weapons than a gun store owner, because I've seen that happen A LOT around the city I grew up near (I lived near San Diego my entire life which is well-known as a surfer's paradise because of the near-perfect temperate weather we have year round, and because we have so many beaches that are within a 20 minute radius of downtown) and it's usually around the time when these surfers begin to spend more and more time smoking weed, and believing that they are "expanding their mind to the truth of the world", they fall down the "Red Pill"/Manosphere podcast rabbit hole and replace their surfboard collection with a vast collection of firearms. I'm rather glad that Retro Studios brought Funky back to his chill, enviro-concious surfer ways, because we could've gotten the timeline where Funky turned into a gun-toting version of Bluster Kong from the cartoon - and nobody wants that! 😂
