Described as “phenomenal” (The Times) and “devastatingly beautiful” (Gramophone Magazine), award-winning choir Tenebrae, under the direction of Nigel Short, is one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles renowned for its passion and precision.
I’m a lifelong atheist but I’m ever grateful that the rebellious Mozart basically sneaked this out of the Vatican to be heard by the public outside of Rome for the first time, almost incurring the wrath of the Pope who had previously banned its performance or even transcription outside the Vatican. It’s heartbreakingly beautiful.
To the ads about converting to Christianity/Catholicism: pls stop, I’m trying to build a DND character with religious trauma and needed the mood set to create the character sheet. Gods damn
“Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me. Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom. Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the bones which You have broken rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins And blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise. For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. By Your favor do good to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem. Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, In burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar.” Psalms 51:1-19 NASB1995 bible.com/bible/100/psa.51.1-19.NASB1995
All this time I always found myself in search. I left Islam and converted to Christianity. This was the biggest step I ever took. It made me feel the light of Jesus fully.
@@alonamaria279 I bet there is enough of this sound out there without any religion behind it. But hey, thanks for another recommendation as to why I will never be a follower of christ. You guys are so pushy and judge everyone that doesn't have the same beliefs, not my style.
As a traditional Catholic, I understand your perspective and respect it. However, this piece of music, like many others composed for sacred settings, is deeply rooted in religious tradition and liturgy. Its beauty and emotional depth are intertwined with its spiritual purpose and the context in which it was created and performed. Sacred music, such as this, is an expression of faith and worship. Its composition, lyrics, and performance are meant to elevate the soul and reflect the divine. While you can certainly enjoy the music for its aesthetic qualities, its full essence and intention are inseparable from its religious origins. If you're looking for similar choral or classical music without the explicit religious context, you might enjoy secular works by composers like Arvo Pärt or the choral arrangements of Eric Whitacre. These pieces often share the same ethereal quality and emotional resonance. I hope you continue to find joy and inspiration in music!
Magnificent. This captures the spirit as well as the letter of the piece in a way that some equally polished versions elsewhere singularly fail to do. It's an incredibly beautiful motet and getting the performance it deserves here.
