Come join us as we begin our journey toward being more self-sufficient. We're making a lot of changes, learning new skills, and we'd love for you to follow along. We're novices, not experts, but maybe we can learn from each other along this journey. Our hope is that we can encourage others to get started toward the same goal of providing resources for themselves; whether you have a farm or live in a neighborhood. We believe there are things we can all do to be a little less reliant on big box stores, and provide our families with food resources that are so much better for our health and well-being. Let's have a lot of fun in our successes and our failures as we start out on this journey together. We're glad you're here.
I canned pineapple in my electric canner and I can tell you I found the pressure canning easier because it needed less water and my broth and spaghetti sauce were the first two things I ever canned.
Hey I was analyzing your youtube channel. Every video you have is amazing .but video views are very low because you don't promote your videos. This results in less video views and subscribers Reply
Thanks for watching. Glad you found that helpful. I wish we had a Costco near us. The closest one is an hour and a half away. I have noticed, from other people’s hauls, they have a strong focus on providing organic options. Sam’s doesn’t quite have that same focus, so I have found azure to be very convenient and beneficial for us.
definitely going to try those applesauce muffins. YUM. Funny how people ask questions about things like the tee shirts, etc.. and I'm going to add : I want to know about that dish towel you had the boiling coconut oil sitting on. lol. It looked so soft (and cute) I have had "over achieving " and "under achieving" ovens... and now always have an oven thermometer in my oven. (currently have 2 in mine.. cuz one was out of whack some how) you can get an oven thermometer $7 and its so worth it. I've had ovens that ran 50 degrees hot to 25 degrees cool
Thank you for watching! The towels are very soft, indeed! They actually came from my local grocery store Food City. I don’t have any tags on them to tell you a brand name. They’re not the most absorbent of dish towels, but I love them. I use them a lot when I’m canning to assemble jars and then rest them on when they come out of the canner because they’re so thick. I appreciate the oven thermometer tip, I’ll have to pick one up for myself and see just how accurate or not my oven actually is. 💗
An Instant Pot is a Pressure cooker. And you can use it to can certain things in a smaller size as long as the pressure you need to use is 10lbs or less. Get educated on it.
I asked for the same canner for Christmas and I did some broth and spaghetti sauce. My biggest problem is I have recipes I like and I thought it would be easier to translate over to canning recipes but haven’t found a great way to make sure they are safe. Looking forward to seeing how you like it.
not a canner myself, but how exciting for you. I think that's a good way to start pressure canning with this machine. Funny sometimes, the things that bring us joy. ..lol. I would be over-joyed to get a new washing machine...lol.
I'm definitely gonna try to make the salmon bowl dish. I've made the chicken dish, not served with pasta tho. We really liked it, it was super rich. I grew up in MIchigan (not far from Canadian border) and although we didn't eat poutine... we did eat Fries & Gravy. The popular diner in our small town had the best Fries & Gravy, brings back memories.
I have the cold now and I am miserable. I want food but I at the too sick to put in the effort 😂 Love cinnamon raisin bread even though I don’t love raisins. I have a really old bag so I just might have to try. I usually plump them in hot water first too 😂
I have never, but I’m going to try them this year. I only found out in the last year that you can. I had an idea last night that they might be good with a hot bacon dressing, what do you think?
Those were panko bread crumbs. I will try and note prices on my next haul, but some rough estimates on this one are : sugar $30/25lb, oats $30/25lb, jasmine rice $50/25lb, chocolate chips $39/5lb.
Great start!!!! Canning is heart and soul gratifying🎉 🙏🏻🙏🏻♥️♥️ b sure to take the rings off b4 storage in case of seal breaks,,rings can help them reseal ,thus food goes bad sometimes w out knowing 🤗🤗 keep up the great work 🤗🙏🏻
Hey, hello, great haul 😊 was wondering. Do you have a link to the shirts that you're wearing the ones that have the Christian logos on it? I love that a prayer Warrior shirt. Do you have a link or where did you get it?
A lot of the shirts I wear I make myself. I can link the SVGs that I bought on Etsy. The prayer warrior shirt is actually a school shirt from my son’s school. They have a student group called Prayer Warriors.
The first time I did the pantry challenge was as a couponer… it also made me nervous because of FOMO. I couldn’t look at the flyers because I would have been at the store. I realized at that point that I was probably a bit addicted to the game… but that also these “savings” I was working for weren’t really savings if I just spent the same budget and put the extra in my basement. You need the “use it up” cycle of that system to make it work. I’ve now switched back to canning and preserving instead of couponing and still do the pantry challenge. I’ve worked up to the 2 months. Things I realized along the way - my family doesn’t eat as much as I think they do, my stockpile is unreasonable 😂, I buy with intentions and cook with comfort, and 2 months is not a very long time. I clean out all my cupboards, and freezers and create the “last chance” boxes of things that need to be used by the end of Feb or they are getting tossed (a whole lot of weird flours this year 😂) Thanks for the video!
I battle FOMO too! 😂 I had to avoid checking flyers and things as well because I knew the temptation to hit a good sale would be too much! Thanks for watching 💗
Sounds like my old pastry brush. I can highly recommend Oxo’s pastry and basting brush. I like the small one for inside the house. If you’re going to use it on a grill, a longer handle might be better. New subscriber. Thanks for sharing
Hi Samantha. I started to watch one of your pantry challenge videos (number 4 I think) then decided to go back to your first pantry challenge post. Hence ending up here. I too live on a small urban plot, in New Zealand, much smaller than yours (10th acre) including the house, but we manage to grow a lot of our own food. There’s only the two of us now, both kids have grown and have left the nest. All the very best as you develop your urban homestead and your channel. ❤
I can imagine that it is hard to do with a 9 year old who wants certain things. I know my teenager would be done when we ran out of ketchup 😂 I stock up in the summer when there is sales so we hopefully have enough to last through the winter. I didn’t do a pantry challenge but I did try to finish freezer things and successfully defrosted the freezer. It is amazing how much fits now that it is ice free and I used up a bunch of older stuff that got shoved to the back. I am going to go buy some chicken tomorrow to cut up and restock the freezer to use when we finish all of the chicken that was already there. We only have one bag of ground beef and one bag of steak tips left which are both on the February menu so we don’t eat only chicken all month. Can’t wait to follow along with your channel.
It’s amazing how things can “hang around” in our storage for a long time! I think that box of linguini had been on my shelf for two years! 😱 Thanks so much for watching 💗
I'm doing the challenge too. While reorganizing my freezer, I found a forgotten pork loin. So will be trying your recipe sometime soon. Thanks for sharing and good luck on your channel!
My name is Peggy Meeter. I am 80. Never to old to learn new recipes. I am from Missouri where my three children were raised on the farm. I watch Ozark Family Homestead and love it.
I will have a “canning pantry” tour video coming out soon that will show you what all I canned in my first year. I do plan to share freezer meals ideas with you along the way, because I incorporate a lot of that in my meal planning. As I begin to restock my freezers from meat sales etc. in the coming weeks, I will start to share the kind of freezer meals I like to keep on hand, as well as trying new things along the way. Thanks so much for checking out the channel 💗
Part of the fun is seeing what people do with just what they have at home. More creative substititions, the better! Loved the new idea for using a can of cranberries!
Hey, good start, I would love to walk along with you. I just subscribed to your channel. I would love to have a channel too but I could never see myself talking into a camera! I found you due to the pantry challenge hash tag 😊
