So happy to find contents like this ❤. I am really strugling with feeding my baby. In less than 5 days he turns 4 months old and i have tried it all 🥲 and right now i'm having the worst time to be honest. My supply has dropped like crazy because baby is not latching at all anymore. He got used to the bottle since day one and we were at the hospital for about the whole first month because of his illness. He used to latch but didn't seem to get milk out of the breasts and i was always engorged. Due to the stress my milk supply dropped overnight and i continued tripple feeding for about 2 and a half months. Breastfeeding pumping and formula supplementing. Now that he is older seeing that the milk does not come from the breast easly and in a very small quantity, he doesn't latch at all and gets fussy all the time. Cries a lot everytime i put him on the breasts. I really hope i could manage to increase the supply and get him to feed directly on the breast. I don't know if it is possible and i am afraid i am way too late to do that. 😥

Hi Mary, Thanks for your video series on OS/FL. They are really informative! I have read your responses to comments in your videos too, and they are truly helpful as I can relate to some of the questions that viewers had posted. I hope you could enlighten me on some matters as follow: 1. Does baby suffering from reflux due to OS/FL tend to struggle clearing out secretions (e.g.; saliva) especially upon waking up? My baby tends to grunt, move his head left and right, and cough out or gag when waking up-not always but often since i suspect i am overproducing. 2. Me and baby exhibit the signs of OS/FL that you have mentioned in your videos. Hence, i started 3-hour block feeding. It makes the other breast really engorged and painful before its turn to be fed on, but i am managing it with cold compress and i am refraining from pumping it out despite the pain and pressure. A. In a 3-hour block feeding, supposed that the designate breast to be fed on has not been emptied during the 3-hour period, should i left it be and proceed to the other breast during the nect block period? B. I wonder how long does it usually take for block feeding to work in controlling my milk supply? C. Would the absence of engorgement be the indication that OS/FL has been corrected? D. What is the risk of developing mastitis with block feeding especially that the other breast is left unlatched on for approx 6 hours in a 3-hour block feeding session (with 3 hours being the block feeding session and another 2-3 hours before baby usually demands for another feed)? How to prevent it from developing? 3. From your videos, i gathered that lactose in foremilk makes baby gassy and irritates his GI tract. Is there a way to avoid this while mommy addresses the OS/FL issue or does baby just have to deal with it while the issue is being addressed? How bad could continuous ingestion of high amount of foremilk affect baby? Looking forward to hearing back from you. Would really appreciate if you could spare your time to clarify my concerns. Thank you!

My baby is 2 months and 10 days old. I made a mistake by introducing the bottle too soon. I didn’t keep her on the breast often enough when she was a newborn. She struggled to latch correctly, which affected my milk supply. I didn't realize I needed to do more skin-to-skin contact to help increase my supply. I’ve been using a pump, but I can only collect a little milk during each session-about 20-30 ml total. In the last two days, I've only been getting around 10 ml or even nothing when pumping. I've been putting her to the breast more often recently and working on breastfeeding. However, she often falls asleep very quickly and doesn't nurse firmly enough. But when I feel my breasts are full and engorged, the baby nurses strongly and steadily. However, as the evening approaches and the milk supply decreases, the baby tends to nurse weakly and doesn’t want to feed. I'm wondering if I can increase my milk supply now that my baby is over one month old. I would be very happy if you responded to my comment.
@marycahillclc

@@nguyetanh1245 The best way to increase supply is by having baby at the breast as often and as long as possible. Put baby to the breast before and after any bottle feeding. It’s very normal to have way less milk in the evening. Our evening milk is higher in fat. Baby’s usually nurse much more often in the evening. They can be fussier in the evening too. Hi. I’ve had to start giving my daughter top ups of formula as she wasn’t gaining enough weight. I had to do this in her first 2 weeks as she wasn’t latching properly but I exclusively breast fed for 5weeks and then she got weighed and had only put on 5oz 🥲 she was born 6 pounds 5 oz and was 6 pounds 10oz at 7 weeks, plenty of wet and dirty nappies, really happy within herself but as she wasn’t gaining enough weight they said I need to top her up after each feed and I’m not able to pump enough to just top up with breast milk so I have to give her formula now as well. Im pumping after each feed and only get 2ml- maximum of 15ml. I’m topping her up every other feed or so and She gained 7oz in 6 days! I haven’t had her weighed this week yet but she clearly wasn’t getting enough from just breastfeeding. I really don’t like having to give her formula and I’m trying to eat better and I’ve seen a slight increase since trying fenugreek (literally only 2 teaspoons over the course of 2 days) but I’m really stuck as I wish I could exclusively breast feed again or at least be able to pump enough to top her up with breast milk 😩 she’s now 9weeks old any advice? Xx
@marycahillclc
@marycahillclc День назад
@@BelleAmorePizza Sometimes supplementing is necessary. Don’t be hard on yourself about it. You’re doing great! ❤️ If you haven’t already, I would see a local lactation counselor to do a weighted feed. You can do this at home if you have a scale. An average feeding from the breast is around 2 ounces. It might be higher in the morning (3 or even more ounces). In the evening it will be lower (could be around 1 ounce a feeding. Afternoon and evening milk gets less in volume but it’s higher in fat). Feeding from the breast for an exclusively breastfed baby is an average 24 ounces every 24 hours. This is for babies who are 1 months to 6 months old. Formula fed babies need more in ounces though because it’s not absorbed as well. The foods that you eat and even supplements, don’t increase your supply. Fenugreek can even reduce supply for some moms. If baby is having 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours, you know they are getting enough. Though if baby is not gaining well, something is obviously wrong. Supplemental feedings are sometimes necessary. Especially for newborns. When baby is having lots of wet diapers but slow weight gain, it is usually a sign that mom has a forceful letdown/ oversupply. I know that may sound crazy because baby isn’t gaining weight but low or high weight gain is one sign. Low weight gain is the most common result of oversupply. Most moms with an oversupply can pump a large amount but there are moms who don’t respond to a pump. Is she choking or at least gulping very quickly during a letdown? Is she having tummy issues? Reflux? Green or goopy poops?

@@farhanamuhammed3994 Breastfeeding with a forceful letdown can be very painful because baby will try to bite down and slip out to the nipple to try to control the flow. Once supply gets more under control and baby can get in a deeper latched position, it usually feels better. As far as time to feed, every baby is different. If baby seems satisfied after 5 minute feedings and is always having 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours, then you know baby is getting enough. If you’re still having pain, you might see a local lactation counselor to help with latch. Have you watched my 3 part videos on Forceful letdown/over supply? @marycahillclc baby Girl is 1 week 5 days old, she was latching really well on Right side but not left and causing nipple to "slope" look like a ramp, causing the tip of the nipple to get a sore, she then started to refuse both nipples by 4 days old, went to hospital that night she'd lost 10.2% of her birth weight so we were put on a feeding plan which is working however the pump they gave me I didn't know the flange was too small till it was too late and it started to split my nipple on the side I have a new pump as of yesterday and have noticed a significant difference and can already see/feel the benefits of changing I am slowly introducing her back to breast and she is taking it well (on the right side which is the "healthy" nipple) I was tossing between an electric pump or Haaka and went electric (hospital grade with correct flange this time) I've breast fed all my babies (I have now got 5, 4 boys 1 girl, all but one boy was tongue tied, little girl just has small mouth no tie) all have been vastly different, myself and our local hospitals lactation consultant noticed her mouth on the inside is smaller than my Left nipple and was/is the cause of the way she was latching on it.

My baby was born premature so my milk had not come in enough for her at the hospital so they had her on formula. We have continued to bottle and breast feed her but the breastfeeding can be really inconsistent. I’ll get her to latch and she can suckle for 5-10min and fall asleep for a little bit then want to feed and we can go for another 5-10min but then she gets very fussy. I’ll try to get her to latch and she either cry’s and pulls away or try’s to suck a moment then pulls back. I’ll message my breast for a minute and I’ll let down milk, so there is still some there. I’m not sure if my let down slows or what the issue is. It also happens when I hand express my milk lets down in strong bursts, kind of like a water pistol. I’m not sure what the issue is, I really want to move my baby to full time breastfeeding but this has been the main issue.

@@imnowan1363 you can ask all the questions you want! ❤️ Baby’s tummy is sometimes bigger after formula because baby takes in more than breastfeeding. Bottles let the milk or formula flow fast so baby’s often don’t realize they are full and over eat. It won’t harm baby to overeat but some get a tummy ache later. Our bellies get big when we overeat too. (It can be uncomfortable for us, and it makes us sleepy too) When we breastfeed, we know baby has had enough when they come off the breast. Breastfed babies who are older than one month old, may skip pooping for several days. Sometimes up to 2 weeks. This is because breastmilk is more completely absorbed and utilized. There is less waste. If a breastfed baby isn’t pooping and seems to feel fine, their body is still using those nutrients. Making baby poop when they’re not constipated, is taking nutrients away from baby. Babies who skip poops for longer stretches, usually continue to do this. If a baby is ever receiving anything other than breastmilk (like formula or solids), they should be pooping every day. Definitely talk to your doctor if you’re concerned but it’s normal for some breastfed babies to skip poops *All babies should have 6 or more wet/pee diapers every day. ❤️

Hi. I became a mother for the second time. First time due to some complications I don't have enough milk supply. But this time I really want to feed my baby breast milk but I am not sure if my supply is enough or not. My baby is 29 days old and I have a C-section. So in hospital and after that due to my condition I use formula milk to feed my baby more often. But now I want to shift him to breastfeeding. I feed him for a whole hour but even after that he is searching for milk. I don't know if this is because he has gas or burp is stuck and that's why he is opening his mouth or this is because breast milk is not enough. And then in this condition I offered him a bottle of formula and he drinks it like he has been hungry for centuries. And after sometime he is spitting milk. I don't know if it is because of overeating or what is the underlined issue. Please guide me what I should do.

Hey Mary, hopefully you see this comment. My baby is just over 2 weeks old now. He’s breastfeeding well (good latch, audible swallows, lots of wet and dirty diapers), but my doctor recommended supplementing him with breast milk/formula to hopefully get 450ml/kg/day. My question is how do you suggest I supplement? especially since I don’t know how much he’s getting at each breastfeed. He breastfeeds for 20-45 mins usually. Here's my review from taking Mary's lactation advise: The challenge I had was that I didn't lactate on time so I hadn't been feeding my baby breastmilk exclusively like i had planned to & my baby was overfeeding on formula. Just 4wks old, she was eating 120ml per feed and sometime more. I felt like my breast milk supply couldn't keep up because everytime i tried to feed her from the breast, she would spend hours & It really stressed me out. Long story short, after watching Mary's video on paced feeding, transitioning to breastmilk & how to increase my milk supply, and also getting tips from her, I am now exclusively feeding my baby breastmilk with more ease & she doesn't eat so much anymore. But started losing quite a bit and then less diaper output and getting really lethargic. We started supplementing about 8-10 oz of formula a day. I have done everything to try to increase supply but never pump more than 2 ounces every 3 hours. Got him back on breast only and then supplement with formula and watching weight and things. So stressful. So wish my milk were enough so we didn't have to play guessing games on how much to feed little guy. I have tried the weighted feedings but he wiggles a lot and the scale bounces between a few ounces so it makes it pointless. Help please! @@emmajames139 If you’d like to keep doing both breastmilk and formula, that’s totally fine but here’s a video to help increase supply while still giving formula. 2 ounces in a pumping is low but baby can usually get more out. Just watch wet diaper count if you decide to wean off of formula. If you had a great supply in the beginning, then you can almost always get back there. Try hand expressing. It will be slow at first but when you get the hang of it, you’ll get more. Be sure to pump, every time baby gets formula. Remember this phrase if something goes into baby something should come out of you” When using a manual or electric pump to increase supply, add lots and lots and lots of breast massage. If you start pumping on a regular basis, you’re pumping needs to be around the same time every day, plus whenever baby has formula. It takes 3 to 5 days to start to see an increase in supply when you’ve been pumping on a regular basis. In the beginning, that will be small and more slowly increase if you are consistent.
