I wish I found your videos with my first. I hsd terrible low supply, but I never even knew/thought/correlated when i had to go back to work that bottle fed vs standard breastfeeding meant potential overfeeding to the point it affected what an actual good supply of breastmilk was. I feel like the education for upcoming moms with breastfeeding/milk supply is not addressed well enough during prenatal appointments! I know providers arent LCs, but I think LCs should definitely be more involved in the ewuation BEFORE baby is born! Thank you for this info, I learned something knew for my second child

You are so right! There is so much wrong information out there and too little education. Even doctors give wrong information. I wish more moms could see an LC while pregnant instead of when the problems start. Hospitals have cut back so much on lactation services. Classes aren’t being offered and if you need help, it can take weeks to be seen. By that point, moms have stopped breastfeeding.🤱 😢

Hi Mary, First thank you so much for your help.My son is 3 months old and he just started daycare at a very well reviewed location with teachers with good experience. I have been back at work since 4week postpartum. I breastfeed whenever I am home and my husband who was on paternity leave was feeding the baby 4 oz every 3 hours when I am at work. When I am At work I make about 4oz every 3 hours but sometimes less. So I still do a MOTN pump for a little extra as needed.The daycare asked me to start giving them 6oz bottles and I don’t make nearly that much. They said he still looks hungry after 4oz. I feel like the daycare is pushing for more milk so he is happy and sleepy and I don’t want to ruin my breastfeeding on the weekends with the baby. I don’t want him to start expecting 6oz

I am so sorry that I’m just now seeing this. You are pumping an amazing amount. Feeding a breastfed baby with a bottle, is usually best done by Pace Feeding. This way baby is not overfed or underfed. Baby will be able to tell you when they are hungry by pace feeding. Here’s a link to my video to explain more. Paced Feeding ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NIDWewaslOQ.html

I watch all the videos out there so see what will help me and I’m stuck only getting the most 1oz and that’s with both breast. I know I’m not alone though, plenty of mamas get so discouraged watching oversupply videos, at least I do. I haven’t given up but god does it take a toll on the body. You’re so right! It’s very sad when moms see those over supply moms then they think that their supply is low when really it’s perfect. 9 times out of 10, moms believe that their supply is low when it’s not. Tell me a little bit about your situation. How old is baby? Are you exclusively feeding from the breast? Or an exclusive pumper or both? Why are you pumping? To increase supply? To store? To feed in a bottle?

@@rebecahidalgo1585 oh no you don’t. Most moms with an oversupply are way more prone to clogged ducts, and mastitis. Their babies often don’t want to latch because it’s like drinking from a fire hose. Sometimes those moms need to become exclusive bumpers if they can’t get their supply lowered/under control. Their babies usually have a little bit of tummy issues. Bad gas, spitting up a lot and reflux. Some of the babies are high weight gainers (that’s ok) but many are low in weight gainers because baby is getting less fat. mom’s with a forceful letdown/oversupply, surprisingly have a harder time than mom is with a low supply. Thank you for your reply Mary. He is 1 month and 5 days old now. He weighs 2.48 kg at birth. After 2 days he weighs 2.37 kg and after another 2 days he weighs 2.30 kg. However, his weight drops to 2.05 kg on his 7th day. So the pediatrician advised to do mixed feeding. On his 1st month, he weighs 3.4 kg. Im not regularly pumping as I am on maternity leave and readily available for my baby. I am doing breastfeeding and formula, but I think my baby is taking more of the formula. I am also not sure if I have enough milk and I am afraid that baby may lose weight so I opt for mixed feeding. But I am planning to switch to exclusive breastfeeding (if I have enough milk) I am doing your tip of dividing the formula into two so we can do more latching for 3 days now, but baby still keep wanting the 2nd formula. Does this mean I have low milk supply? Can I do something more to increase it?
@marycahillclc
@marycahillclc 4 месяца назад
@@llamado9813 That’s great that you are going back and forth between breast and bottle in a feeding. Try to do that every feeding when possible. It will take 3 to 5 days to start to increase supply. Keep track of baby’s wet diapers. He should always have 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours. Do you have access to a baby scale? Doing a weighted feed, where you weigh baby before and after feeding from the breast,. This will help to know how much he’s getting. He should be getting 1 to 3 ounces of breastmilk per feeding. It’s usually more in the morning and then lower in the evening. That seems like a low amount for baby to take in, but they need less breastmilk than they do formula. This is because breastmilk is more completely digested. Babies need a larger amount of formula to get the same nutritional benefits. If you don’t have a scale that you can use, your doctor may let you come in and weigh baby, nurse him and then weigh again. It would be good to meet with a lactation counselor if possible. She would definitely be able to do a weighted feed. ❤️

I have been following you on this channel for a bit now. Thank you! I have a 5 month old and went back to work full time when baby was about 2.5 months old. Do you have a video on or can you talk about how moms can deal with going back to work and how that can maybe mean the end to a breastfeeding journey? My baby started refusing the breast (we haven’t had the best nursing journey but there was at least some nursing on the breast) and baby only wants the bottle now. I’m exclusively pumping because trying to go back to breastfeeding when we can (eg weekends) has just been frustrating. I also thought it was very nice to hear that pumping 1 Oz / hr is within the norm, which means that I don’t have an under supply (which I thought) but rather my baby gets more than he needs (he has since he was born - was fed with formula at the hospital on day one and two since his blood glucose dropped and my milk hadn’t come in yet). Now I’m mostly able to feed him with pumped breast milk but he does get formula as well.

@@marycahillclc oh that’s a whole story haha. My milk didn’t come in until day 5 I believe and he was already eating from the bottle (he got formula at the hospital and he was probably eating up to 2 Oz pretty quickly), so I felt like I had to play catch up. I was pumping in the beginning and not Nearly getting as much milk as now and we had issues with latching. While two different lactation consultants at the hospital showed me what to do this was all so new to me and we were exhausted and tired and it was just so much that I did not feel like I knew what I was doing when I got home on day 3. Since he started crying when I tried to breastfeed him and I got frustrated I only tried a few times before I reached out to consultant again, the first consultant was recommended to me but she only did online / video consultation which wasn’t very helpful and also she was very biased to breast milk only/ breastfeeding only I felt like. She did mention he may have a tongue tie and some muscular imbalances around his jaw etc. a few weeks later I got another consultant, in person, she was a lot better. She also did say that he may have a bit of a tongue tie and she showed us what exercise we can do to strengthen his suction/ better his jaw movement/ muscles. I was able to breastfeed him some (maybe twice or three times a day), latch got better, but I wasn’t exclusively nursing, there were bottles. But he was open to both, switching back and forth easily, I did not feel like he got enough from me though. It started when I went back to work at around 2.5 months. Bottle use went up and breastfeeding went almost down to zero. I was able to after work in the beginning at least once in the evening, but eventually timing was off - by the time I got home he already ate or was asleep, then he started to refuse the breast one day. I got discouraged again. He refused it again when I tried again another day and so forth. I only got him to feed once or twice when he was still sleepy or in the middle of the night when he was sleepy and I was nice and full with a fast letdown. It just got less and less and now I’ve given up pretty much. It’s very hard emotionally to accept but it’s also extremely hard to try to make it work with being gone all day. I don’t know how to make it work although I would like to, it’s emotionally very tiring, tiring to try and him and I get frustrated again and emotionally difficult to accept the fact that our breastfeeding journey was Rocky and brief and just to be grateful that I can give him my milk in another way. I’m doing my best, I know. I haven’t watched your bring baby back to breast video yet but I will today. I also feel like at around the same time he was getting more and more aware of his surroundings and also easily distracted so that may have contributed to it as well. Increase in bottles, not fast enough let down so he got frustrated etc… a whole set of things. Sorry this was a long one 😄

@marycahillclc Год назад
@@natp1877 I like a long story 😎. That gives me more insight. That’s very normal for mature milk to not come in until day 5. Before that, we have colostrum and then transitional milk. There definitely are times that baby needs supplemented but that often starts before it’s really needed. Even with the low blood sugar, doctors won’t let it ride for a few hours before starting to supplement. I wasn’t there and I’m not a doctor so your doctor may have been correct in the decision but it can often be corrected by baby at the breast and lots of skin to skin. Did we talk about forceful letdown/oversupply? That may have been a major factor in all of the issues. How many ounces in total were you pump in the beginning? For that extra pumping, I would just pump more at around the time that baby eats. There’s no need to do extra pumping in the night unless babies eating that often in the night. My body makes more milk by how much we take out and it makes that extra milk at around the times we are usually taking it out. If baby is not needing it that often in the night, it would be good to get a few minutes of extra rest.

@marycahillclc 3 месяца назад
@@amina-tl5du if a mom has a forceful letdown/over supply that is not under control, it can sometimes cause reflux. Even if mom is an exclusive pumper. This is because mom’s milk may be higher in lactose. Pumping 27 ounces a day shouldn’t be a problem though. (24 ounces a day is average for a breastmilk fed baby to take in from 1 month to 6 months old. Formula fed babies take in more as they age because they don’t absorb it as well as breastmilk) If baby spits up, it can look like a lot but not really be that much. If baby will willingly take in more milk, then they may turned that extra. Reflux is a symptom of something else. Doctors often refer to it as a condition though. Sometimes giving formula can help reflux when we don’t know the cause of it. Reflux will usually get better over time. You may be able to go back to exclusively breastmilk later if you want. Theres nothing wrong with feeding formula. It’s a great alternative to breastmilk and sometimes necessary. Just talk with your doctor or local lactation counselor if you have concerns. ❤️

I’m not sure if I’m reading correctly, but it sounds like you are expecting to have a larger amount in the morning if you’ve gone a longer time since your last pumping session . Is that correct? Many moms believe that they need time for the breast to fill up. This is actually going to reduce supply. You may feel more engorged, but encouragement is not more milk. It’s inflammation around the milk ducts. To make more milk you have to be removing milk on a regular basis. If possible, I would add another pumping a little later. If you stay up until 9 or 930, I would pump at around that time. Doing lots and lots of that breast massage, stimulates your breasts, telling your body to make more milk. You can even do breast massage on top of your bra and shirt. You can add that several times throughout the day plus massage just before pumping. Adding heat before pumping will speed up your letdown. When you’ve been consistent about massage and pumping times, you will slowly see an increase. In about 3 to 5 days, you should see an increase in supply of maybe just one ounce total for the day but with consistency, you will start to see a little more each week. It’s important to be patient with yourself. ❤️

A mom with a forceful letdown/over supply or a mom who is less than 6 weeks postpartum, will usually pump a lot more but “normal” (perfect ❤️) moms, see 1 to 1.5 ounces an hour (while awake). The amount will usually be higher in the morning and much lower in the afternoon and evening. Have you been seeing that amount?

@marycahillclc thank you so much 🥹 yes.. I'm 7weeks postpartum exclusively pumping every 2 to 3hrs. Getting 1.5 to 2 oz from both breast combined. Supplementing with formula as I see needed. have a sugerical history so I'm trying to be grateful im producing anything at all. I've had the help from an ibclc. Baby wouldn't latch from the start.. gets extremely frustrated even when i try nipple shield. it's mentally and physically exhausting.. hoping he will become an exclusive breast feeder eventually as he gets older.

Lactation treats don’t work anyway so no problem. 👍 PCOS can affect a mom’s milk supply but if it was going to be a problem, it would have been a problem from the beginning. Since you had a supply in the beginning, you can get back there but it’s a big commitment. You’ll have to -pump on a regular basis without skipping pumping sessions. -add lots of breast massage before pumping. The video will explain it in more detail for you. Remember that it takes 3 to 5 days to start to see an increase and it will slowly increase from there if you’re very consistent. Even just a small amount of breastmilk, benefits baby for the rest of their life. Being a pumping mom is hard work. You are doing an amazing job mom! 🥰

How many mls/ounces are you pumping every 24 hours? It’s usually best to go up a size if you’re having pain. Your nipple should move freely in and out of the flange tunnel but not pulling the areola in. Some nipple cream can be rubbed on your nipples to help the nipple move easier. If your nipple is “elastic”, your nipple will almost touch the end of the tunnel. Is that happening? Hand expressing can usually get out more milk and it’s not painful. It takes some practice but once you get the hang of it, it goes just as fast as a pump.

@@kerryholbert4151 i think that you already are doing this but just make sure that you pump as often as she eats. If she gets formula, you should add an extra pumping or do a mini power pump session. This is where you pump, massage breasts for 10 minutes then pump again. Applying heat before pumping can speed up your letdown. Try hand expressing or pump, then hand express. A baby who feeds directly from the breast, takes in an average of 24 ounces every 24 hours. This is for babies from one month to six months old. If baby eats quickly from a bottle, they may need to be “Pace Fed”. This gives baby just what they need but at the same speed that baby would get fed from the breast. Your output is a little low but you are definitely making milk. Just be sure that you stay consistent on pumping and always add lots and lots of breast massage. Also, hold baby skin to skin as often as possible. Pumping is a lot of work and can be a struggle. Baby feeding at the breast gives more stimulation to tell your body to make more milk. You can be an exclusive pumper, but you have to keep telling your body that you need more milk by adding stimulation. Most moms can make enough milk for their baby, but occasionally there are some Moms who just can’t produce. These moms usually produce 0 to 1 or 2 ounces. Most moms that I work with that can pump close to 20 ounces, can usually increase that amount. I don’t want you to give up but I don’t want you to feel like you are a failure. You are doing an amazing job! There’s nothing wrong with giving baby some formula. The benefits of giving even a small amount of breastmilk, stays with baby’s body for the rest of their life. How was your delivery? Did you have any retained placenta?

He’ll be 8 weeks this Wednesday. He was 9 pounds and 8 ounces via c section when he was born. Lost weight while we were in hospital before discharge. We went to lactation on his 5th day and they said he lost a lot of weight he needed to gain before he gets reweighed 2 days later. They gave us formula. Because he was falling asleep on my breast and was not participating in feeding. But when we went home he ate so much formula and seemed satisfied for the first time. I was so sad and felt guilty. We have been feeding him formula since with breastfeeding. I’ve been pumping ever since and been inconsistent with it without realizing that it’s wrong. But noticed increase in milk supply but still not enough My doctor prescribed Reglan. It increased again but still not enough. I would get milk in the mornings around 60 ml and afternoons around 20-40 mls.

@@marhar5973 Please don’t feel bad. You are doing a great job mommy! It’s very normal for babies to loose weight in the 1st days. Babies from a traumatic birth like a C-section will lose even more weight. The biggest reason for this is water retention. If you were retaining water, so was baby. If you were given IV fluids, you and baby will both have waterweight that you will lose in those first days.. Many doctors don’t take this into consideration when they look at how much weight baby has lost. Your lactation counselors might have been able to help you pump for some extra milk to feed sleepy baby, but sometimes formula is very necessary. The very best way to increase supply is by having baby at the breast more. Check out the video that I linked above. It will help to increase supply and very slowly wean off of formula. Baby will be able to let you know when they don’t need as much formula. You’ll know that baby is getting enough if baby always has 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours. And in that video, I explain how to go back and forth several times in a feeding between breast and bottle to increase your supply. You can do this mommy! ❤️

It’s so frustrating to me at how many millions of dollars supplement companies make off of Mom is wanting to increase their supply. The very best way to increase your supply, is by having a baby at the breast more often. When I can’t happen, you can add pumping with lots and lots of rest and massage before and during the pumping session. Does your baby latch at the breast? How old is baby? @@rajdeepsinhvaghela7212 1000 ml a day is well over what baby would take in if breastfeeding from the breast. Babies from 1 months to 6 months old who are exclusively breastfed will take in approximately 24 ounces (720ml) every 24 hours. Formula fed babies will take in more because formula isn’t absorbed as well so baby needs more in formula. Have you been able to pump 1000ml a day for the past 8 weeks? What signs did you see that showed low supply? Are you choosing to exclusively pump for personal reasons or was baby not latching well (it’s totally ok to be an exclusive pumper. @@rajdeepsinhvaghela7212 I will link a video here that will help you to wean off of formula slowly. You can let baby tell you when they are full, and no longer needing formula. You’ll need to do this technique at every feeding. You’ll be offering the breast, then some formula and back to the breast and then more formula all in one feeding. After a few days, baby won’t want that second amount of formula. I know that it seems scary to not know exactly how many ounces are going into baby, but you will know for sure that baby is getting enough if you always see six or more wet diapers, every 24 hours. Breast-fed babies eat small amounts more often. This is the way that breast-feeding is supposed to work. When baby wants to eat more often, it can make mom believe that her supply is low when it really isn’t. Babies will cluster feed in the afternoon and evening. During cluster feeding, baby may want to nurse nonstop. You can know that your supply is still good because baby is satisfied in the morning. Again, baby will always have six more diapers every 24 hours to let you know they’re getting enough. ❤️ Once you are feeding exclusively from the breast, if you randomly pump after or between feedings, you might only see a few mls or just drops. This will make you believe that your supply is low, which again it really isn’t.
