Menlo Grohman is one of my best friends, and he started his mission about two weeks after I did (I served in the Tempe Chandler Service Mission). I was actually planning for the longest time to come to PHX Sky Harbor to greet him with his family. The only reason why I didn't come was because I got a stomach bug and was vomiting pretty badly. But regardless, I'm glad that Menlo's back and I've been able to hang out with him again.
His void was filled by another missionary from Congo Brazzaville in the same mission, Ghana Cape Coast! He answers to the name of Elder Bazolo ... Thank you very much and it is magnificent!
I don't really know except some missionaries are allowed to come home a few weeks/couple weeks early if they are going to start school. Seeing as he came home right before the fall semester that is probably why :)
