The Failure of of these systems resulted in the loss several P-51 mustangs in WW2. It seems that the planes were not equipped with the correct 'Uplock' mechanisms.
Lot complex mechanism would be reduced if replaced by elongated ~mudguard size of tyretrain isolating inner deck machine exposure , & a simpler retracting mechanism with tyres along Axis of plane similar to nose wheel...
Most later 47s used the Lycoming VO435. V for vertical So i suspect there were some differences in the oil pathways and perhaps no thrust bearing required. I'd love someone who really knows to explain it.
There are several variations of the VO-435 in 47's. All more closely related to the GO-435 with a separate gearcase for reduction gear. Some models with transverse accessories. Your model number suffix would describe layout much like the VIN on a car.
