Yeah bro Verizon intentionally leaves phone features out of recognized tablet IMEIs in their provisioning systems to prevent people from adding a tablet line for 30 dollars a month on their accounts (business accounts in particular) and having phone calling features billed at the cheaper price. It prevents gaming of the billing system. Once the phone number is on the tablet, the end user would call Verizon and disconnect the newly generated tablet number....and BAM!!....phablet for Hella cheap! Samsung's native dialer on tablets do not connect to Verizon's network because Verizon intentionally blocks out the key calling features that allow that SIM to connect to the calling portion of the network on a tablet IMEI's native dialer. I know this for a fact, as I worked for Verizon for 13 years

8 inch tablets are already slim pickings LTE or 5G versions are even fewer but are out there (I just bought the Doogee T20 mini) Add in the requirement for physical buttons and I think you might be out of luck. You might have to decide on what is more important and pick 2 of the 3,

I was able to easily source and acquire a replacement (or in my use case, 2nd/additional) battery for the Tab Active 3, but also could not source one for the Tab Active 5. Compounding the problem, the battery for the 3 is not compatible with the 5. Backwards compatibility is an important concept that is apparently lost on Samsung. Consumers want to be able to stay within the same product line and utilize already purchased peripherals. I use two batteries consistently with my Avtive 3 - especially when travellings and when on long bike rides. The option to open the unit up and pop in a fresh battery for double the longevity is a major selling point. Not sure why this wasn't considered foe the Active5. Big missed opportunity for sure.
@markmoreno7295 the tab active 3 has 4gb of RAM, and you can enable RAM plus feature for an additional 4gb of virtual RAM giving you 8gb total. For the tab active 5, if you buy the 128gb version you get 6gb of RAM, if you buy the 256gb version you get 8gb, and you can also enable RAM plus for an additional 4gb virtual RAM, so with the high end 5 you could rock 12gb. @@make.and.believe yes it does help, and it is great news. I have an iPad mini but I don't like the ecosystem nor the apple ID. I don't like the absence of battery changes. So I am looking for alternatives. I only wish this new Samsung had an oled screen like my S10. That would cinch it. I also don't like the way apple organizes photo files. But the one great thing about Apple is the language capability such as when switching back and forth between Japanese and English. Maybe, as a bonus, this tablet has language?

I'll be sticking to my Active 3 and giving the 5 a miss until Samsung comes up with a substantially better tablet. I'm on my 2nd Active 3 after dropping my first one under my ride on mower while mowing my backyard...ha ha, it wasn't rugged enough for that mishap. Whoops !
@techbuyer yes, the 5 was definitely faster. For me it came down to the LTE version sold in the states not making calls, so I returned my 5 and a, M still very satisfied with the 3 wifi version as my daily driver. But it sounds like you are in Europe and the EU mode, shouldn't have that restriction. In your shoes I would probably go with the 5. Let us know what you choose and good luck!

Disclaimer: for those in the back, AVOID THIS TABLET. IT IS ONE OF THE MOST OVERPRICED PRODUCTS I HAVE COME ACROSS AND IT IS NOT WORTH YOUR TIME UPGRADING TO THE ACTIVE 5 FROM THE ACTIVE 3. Heyo just a heads up bro, after digging the comments section to address one comment under my own review, I cannot recommend this tablet anymore and I will say that you dodged a major bullet wjth the X308U model. If youre willing to import a X306B model while not having any US warranty, then I would suggest doing so. But anyway, good on you for avoiding this tablet and shame on Samsung for cutting corners here. I am now heavily regretting purchasing this tablet and selling my Active 3 a week ago. This tablet isn't worth it anymore.
I received my Tab Active 5 two days ago and went through the same ordeal. I'm still considering returning it, but I have found a carrier specific work around that i may be able to live with. T-mobile has an app similar Google Voice, that allows you to make and receive calls and texts, using your number, to any device via the app. Although I feel that I invested too much money into this device to not have it work the way I expected, It seems to be my best option for the moment. Apparently just another example of a company trying to maximize profits at the customer's expense.
good video, thanks for sharing! i am able to pop out my Simm card from my fold 5 and use it in my duo or in my tab6 lte version and also my ipad pro12" lte version.. you need a tablet which has 'LTE" and wifi.. they are seperate antenaes.. lte = cellphone wifi = modem in your home anyways it sounds like a settings issue so you needed tech support not sales,.. and if you did contact tech support then you need to have the issue escalated anyways it already exists and we have been using them for years and years (the tablet phone) 48:53 "connecting it to a phone" = paying for a cellphone service which gives you a Simm card which you then place into the tablet to be able to use the lte antennae for the cellphone towers to work with the tablet my issue: the fold 3 broke within 12 months (the folding screen protector peeling off) the fold 4 broke within 13 months ( the inner folding screen became intermittent, turning off whenever and back on whenever it wanted ) the fold 5 (today, now.. i suspect i have less than 5 months b4 it breaks) so my interest is getting rid of the folding part (the part which breaks) and therefore replacing the fold with an 8 inch lte tablet. ill probably simply go back to the note series non- folding phones which never broke for me. All this to avoid feeling forced to trade in the fold for the new year model before last year's model breaks. which is what i have done the last 3 years.
Hello - I spent 49 minutes of my life watching your review - While i did like the unboxing and basic features section - I think you need to better educate yourself on how to make a device your own (regardless of form factor) - I am on the fence as to whether or not to take the plunge as Samsung devices come at a premium price - I have always been a latest greatest device guy - (last one being the Z fold) but when it drops and cost more than half the price of the device to replace the screen only - It becomes a no go for me - This is not meant to be critical of your review - I enjoyed it very much - But - I disagree with your overall assessment - Study the OSI model and try to understand what any device does when it has a data connection - I spent many years at IBM as a senior consultant and can say without question that every data connection can be "massaged"
Hi! Thanks for your feedback. I totally agree with you on the price challenge. The folding phones are an especially difficult investment in my view due to the inevitable crease issues. I'm not sure what more research I could have done prior to purchase though, as I called Samsung business to verify the devices ability to make calls using LTE sim before I ordered the tablet, only to find that this wasn't indeed the case. Are you implying that there is a way to make the tablet do this? Is that what you mean by massaging? I would be curious to learn how if so. I was able to make calls using Google Voice and Teams, however I was unable to call or receive calls using the SIM's cellular plan. I was also unable to install (even via sideload) alternative direct dialing apps like Google phone which should have enabled this capability. I've heard here in the comments that there is an international model.of the tab active 5 that does not have this limitation - and indeed Samsung does sell an international model but not directly in the US. One would need to get it from a 3rd party seller which can get sketchy. Also, I haven't yet heard reports of the international model working with American service providers. When I finally got someone from Samsung to admit that the limitation was intentional in order to keep people buying phones the representative also noted that the limitation was in place not only as a software control, but as an agreement with the carriers. He mentioned AT&T and Verizon specifically, and noted that in the fine print of the Samsung website that even the 'call and text on other devices' feature won't work for these carriers because they don't want users to have the ability to make and receive calls from devices other than phones. Since this vid I have upgraded my phone and I can verify that this last part isn't true. The call and text on other devices feature does work on AT&T in California using my tab active 3 (wifi version - no sim). So the guy might have been mistaken or lying - not sure. Anyway thanks again for your feedback. I would love for this to work and would definitely be interested in learning if you have a method you can demonstrate or knowledge on something I've missed. Bloke, top vid. A couple of things. An absolutely well articulated, informative and free of unnecessary fluff vid. Firstly, lucky man, hot wife. Secondly, great short-cuts and tips for us non-Android flogs. Lastly, I too bought this Phablet for calls and am awaiting delivery. If SS has FUA with this limitation, I will boycott all tech companies and revert to Morse code until they sort this shite out. Otherwise, top job fella and go the Raiders.
Holy crap how did I miss this? Thanks for bringing it to light, I assumed earlier that you can make phone calls on all cellular models sold in the world but Samsung is trying to cut corners with this tablet. I am not pleased with Samsung at all and I have changed my review of this tablet to do not recommend.
@@make.and.believethe US only sells X308U models, so you will have to import the X306 models internationally or buying that specific model through eBay.

That's weird.... I'm running a S9 Tab ultra, 5g, 1tb internal memory and 1tb sd card... I'm in uk using a Vodafone sim card in the tablet. Calls work fine...even the the auto message answer side works fine....all aspects of the S9 ultra behave like a phone... BTW I'm watching your vid, cos I love my xcover 5 phone, and the s9 tab is too ridiculously big to be portable.....so I thought I'd combine all the tech into one device. I believe the agreement to limit this service on tablets is between Samsung and American carriers, however it may also e tend to Canada. If I were up for carrier hoping I might have tried a SIM for Mint mobile, as Ryan's company tends to buck the bigger carriers on stuff like this. But unfortunately I am locked I to AT&T for the time being. Ah capitalism....

Your carrier does not block out key calling features necessary for your tablet to connect to the calling network of your provider. American carriers do this to force you to have 2 separate devices for 2 separate purposes
Excellent detailed review - really appreciate it. Here's a question for you: Would this tablet make sense if it has to be used only on Wi-Fi without the need for LTE (Sim) and for basic needs like watching youtube, do bit of web browsing, etc. at a stationary location? In fact, it'll be nice if you can consider testing the Wi-Fi only version too. Once again - thank you. I would 100% recommend the WiFi version. The Galaxy Tab Active 3 WiFi version is my daily driver, and the 5 improves upon the form factor, OS update life and UI significantly. I would not recommend spending the extra $ on the LTE version, but yes absolutely the WiFi version of the Active 5 is an amazing tablet capable of doing everything you need and more. Also- if you aren’t familiar with DEX, check out the end of my video on the tab Active 3 for a demo, it’s a total game changer and the Active Tab series does it really well. Much love!

@@prithvi9727 it worked fine for me. Some TVs won't work with wireless but most smart TVs or TVs with roku sticks should work. If wireless doesn't work you can use a wired connection with a USB C to HDMI cable. I hope this helps!
@prithvi9727 to be fair, I only tried wireless as I have a Samsung smart TV. I have returned the tab 5 at this point so I can't test wired. You may want to ask someone here in the comments section who has one in hand to verify. :) I am seeing rumors that wired Dex might not be supported due to a change from USB C 2.1 to USB C 3... I'm not sure why that would prevent wired Dex though...

I also got the camera2 probe app and it's showing limited support. It has manual focus but not auto focus You might want to use your phone for photos unfortunately, or get an iPhone if you want the LDAR sensor

Just plug and play. Active 5 is for rugged users who want a *good tablet*. Ayo, im guesing you saw my comment about this tab on the Tab Active 3 video. Glad you made the review of this tablet! I love this tablet too, but it has 3 flaws. 1. Mono speaker - not good for watching videos 2. Weight - this thing is ridiculously heavy for reading ebooks and textbooks for class using one hand 3. USB 2.0 here vs 3.1 on the Active 3: we lose wired DeX and have to now use Wireless DeX only with our TV's. I tested this three days ago but its honestly trash Otherwise this tablet seems like an upgrade to the Active3. I wouldnt say excellent, but its decent if you dont need to use Samsung DeX 44:51 I am on visible and it does work on the Verizon network. I believe it will work on the AT&T network because it filters through Samsung's servers. The only reason why it doesn't work is because the US network carriers can decide which bloatware can go on the android phones (but not Apple because Apple is huge and has larger leverage than the network carriers) and they deliberately choose to uninstall the apk/app that is responsible for this feature from Samsung. Although AT&T lately now has call and text on other devices reinstalled. Also, this is dependent on if you have a Samsung phone or not. If you don't, it will not work. Also, if you want to make calls, you can install Google phone and replace the Samsung phone app. Maybe it will work
Fully agreed. And as my 3 works so well I'm hard pressed to upgrade. Dex is a huge feature for me. The one thing that has me is that the OS for the 3 won't be getting more updates, so I won't be able to use the device apps for work, but I can still work through citrix so there is a work around. Thanks for weighing in on this.

Its a beautiful upgrade from the Active Tab 3, but a total rubbish to just have lte that cnt be put into maximal use. For now i have put up my AT3 up for sale so i can get a foldable that gives me the option for partability, wide screen usage and full phone calls and text usage. Thanks for a very detailed video.
Absolutely. I'm a bit stuck on where to go next to be honest. My AT3 is still my daily driver and I love it, but it's wifi and so I'm tied to a phone hotspot for connectivity on the go. I loved the upgrades in the AT5, but it would also be a wifi tablet tied to a phone since the 5gLTE version doesn't support actual 5gLTE functionality. I'm hesitant to go with a foldable for 2 reasons: 1) I'm confident the screen is going to break. 2) I have doubts about using it as a dashboard (unfolded) on my bicycle, like I do with the Active Tabs. To get a real 'phablet' it seems you have to go back to something like the Galaxy Note 20, which won't be receiving OS updates after this year - and I need to be using the latest OS for security reasons for my business use. Hoping someone out there has an idea I'm missing - or maybe a new company will hit the market and release a real phablet - preferable a rugged one with good hardware specs, supporting the current Android for the next several years.

Hence the reason to ditch the AT3. Sooo painful because the AT3 is the best tab i have ever laid my hands on. Another thing is that these Actives dont support Camera2api which Gcam needs to function to at least enhance its image and video quality. If you need an all rounder you will find it in the 10inchers, unfortunately i dont dig them one bit. They are too big to handle. Chinese brands like the Alldocube and Oukitel have nice 8inchers but very mediocre features. Alldocube iplay 50 mini pro & oukitel rt3 or something like that. No fingerprint, no flash..... They suck too

I just got this tablet from the US, i am currently in Africa and should get it soon but i noticed that the version i got sm-t577u/ds has a dual imei that means its lte thats supports dual sim cards but....... It doesn't have an earspeaker. I intend using it as my primary or daily driver but since it doesn't have an earpiece/speaker, would it still usable as a normal phone? Would it have a dialer to make phone calls ?
Hi! I use both Google Voice and Microsoft Teams to make calls from the tablet. I also use Google Meet for video calls. All of these work as VOIP over wifi without a carrier service. I would think that if you have a SIM with an internet/data plan that would work too. My version is wifi only so I can't test, let me know if this works for you:) I hope this helps!

That's a strange take. I'm not sure what you mean. I don't sell these, in fact Samsung doesn't even advertise them direct to consumers they sell them as enterprise machines for business. I am also so impressed with the product that I'm about to buy the newly released Active5. What exactly about the product do you find 'inferior'? Curious.

I have recently purchased an EB7 from a pawnshop😂 it actually works really well the only problem I’m having with it is the battery indicator with it saying fall or haft left it will just shut off. I am hoping deep cycling will fix that problem as well
It should Also one of the great things about this bike is that replacemt/extra batteries are only about $100 from swagtron. I picked up a second that I keep strapped to the rack I added to essentially double the range.
Inside my panniers - that are waterproof of the most popular make - I use stuff sacks of various colours and sizes for all different uses, electronics, waterproofs, food, stoves, fire kit, first aid, clothes, bike tools etc. I then built a power station with a ammo box for the solar units and another with 2 x 12v motorbike batteries in parallel - I have a board on the back with lights for brake and turn signals. But I made everything so the trailer can be taken down and packed away. Mine is a cargo trailer made by an el cheapo Chinese company with no name but it's solid. My next upgrade is the wheels for something better for off-roading. My solar panels are fully flexible 150 watt x 4 I put them up on a frame when I stop somewhere.
Absolutely, as soon as I see it on the market. That being said, my 3 is still my daily driver and preferred device, so no plans to retire it. Cant wait for the new model. Keep me posted if you see it available before I do!
I plan on getting the Galaxy Tab Active5 when it releases to replace my iPad mini (6th generation) and Tab S7. My iPad mini died on me twice and the Tab S7 will stop receiving security updates in August.
If they release a 5 I will definitely be getting one too! Here’s hoping. I replaced my iPad Mini with my 3 and it was the best decision I’ve made in a long while.
@make.and.believe The good news is that Samsung recently announced the Galaxy Tab Active5. From what I read, it will come in 128 GB and 256 GB of storage. The 128 GB model will have 6 GB of RAM, while the 256 GB model will have 8 GB of RAM. It will also come with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Samsung did not specify which processor they will use, but my guess is that they might use the Exynos 1380.
