Hey there cool kids!
Today we're tackling part 1 of a 3 part build, where I'm taking an old chopper style single speed bicycle I got at a garage sale for $10 and turning it into a custom electric motorcycle. Part 1 will be restoring the bike to functionality, Part 2 will focus on the electric engine, and Part 3 will be dedicated to finishing work.

Just in case you were unaware, the brakes that you needed to purchase are especially made for the Schwinn Stingray model.

Yeah they were not easy to find and definitely not a standard size. I ended up using 135mm classic linear pull brake calipers from a brand called Sunlite. Those did the trick! 😀

That "hold over hand rail bar" that you have mentioned is known as a Sissy Bar. And the seat is named a banana seat. And no, it is not for two people.

Thanks! Yes I finally got to the bottom of the mystery of this bike and am now a stingray lover for life! Deeply involved in the culture. Looking to acquire an original at some point. In fact I am restoring and converting another chopper now with the original green paint job. I am so behind on video editing and posting lol. Have to get caught up. 😀

I believe that is a stingray I bought a 2005 Stingray today off of marketplace I gave $85 for it well that's what she wanted I gave her $120 so she bring it to me but I've got it broke down painted and now I'm trying to figure out how to mount this bbr tuning motor I have over to it

Both your tyres are on the wrong way around, if you hit a wet road or a puddle on that, you will instantly aquaplane and the bike will slide from under you, the arrows in the tread should aim forward, also, your front reflector is upside down, and you need an "outer cable" on the brake line 🤣 i have never seen that done before in my life

Hey thanks for your feedback! I've long since removed the reflector and replaced with a headlight on front and taillight on back. I also replaced the front tire with a new 29 inch one (original was 24 inch) and it doesn't have the arrow treads. The rear tire arrow treads do point to the rear, but the rim is definitely on properly (it can only be with the chain gear on the right), so at some point before I picked the bike up the original owner must have changed the tube and put the tire on the rim backwards. Crazy, but I am not totally surprised- it was in pretty rough condition when I got it. I will have to flip it back when the tube needs changing. I just finished installing a mid motor electric conversion kit and its a fantastic ride. Will post a vid on it here eventually. Have an awesome weekend 😎

@@make.and.believe yes the previous owner must have put the tyres on the wrong way, instead of ejecting the water out of the sides of the tyre, it will funnel it to the centre of your tyre and the force will cause you to aquaplane (like you are on ice), definitely make sure your tyres are correct before adding an electric motor though, it can be deadly

@keyproductions100 totally. I am fortunate that rain isn't much of an issue here in SoCal, that would not have been fun. I will definitely do this soon, thanks for the heads up! I was eventually planning to replace the back tire (it is pretty worn down) This might be my catalyst to go for it. You rock!

How do you not know that this is a Schwinn Stingray Chopper? The tire itself says Stingray

Yeah actually that should have been a sign. I have so many tires though with so many brand names on them, and rarely do they line up with the brand of the bike, so I didn't make the connection. This was also my introduction to stingrays of any variety, they weren't around when and where I was a kid in the 80s. Now that I have another one with original paint though, I can see that schwinn went all out on the logos and branding for the 2004-5 chopper series. Probably looking to capitalize on the nostalgia for the original models. It's really a shame that schwinn sold off to another company. These bikes are awesome!
