From experience of this singer, sounds about right. I've noticed speeds a little below 78 stated in early catalogues. First time I've heard this in English & didn't know of Macdonough's operatic talent as I've mainly heard him sing ballads. They've achieved a good balance between Harry & chorus, bet it was crowded around that recording horn!
@colonelbogeysfauxcow
@colonelbogeysfauxcow 15 дней назад
76 seems to do it for acoustic victors, I like that it’s in English because it’s one of the few operas I understand. Macdonough seems to have a quiet range as he did ballads, this, and popular. A patriotic that he did and I hope somehow turn up is him doing “Goodbye Dolly Gray” on 7” inch Victor monarch from around 1901, first time I heard him. He does a very good job here, 5 guys around right next to the horn with an orchestra behind them.

@@colonelbogeysfauxcow Yes, opera is a tricky to follow if not in English, especially on record. With a well known aria, I can enjoy in another language, especially if its the great Caruso!

Speed certainly sounds about right. Harry's voice seems to have got sweeter with age, some of his early records sound rather screechy, wonder if he was trying too hard to compensate for the 'deafness' of early recording equipment. A nice Easter Hymn.

@@colonelbogeysfauxcow EMG Colonel was one of the most knowledgeable collectors I've known & had an excellent ear for speed. Sadly, he passed away shortly after his last upload. Long may his channel stay up, for the info we can all glean. 76 seams an unofficial acoustic norm once record sales became established, but those from the turn of the century seem all over the place! Here's a very slow early Climax from our friend 'Mac' ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5Ql3Wn-tYjw.htmlsi=a6CtP_iKKGAg4mOQ Think it still may be a bit fast. Early 'Winner' records were sometimes recorded fast, but with much variation. Think the 78 norm was settled on sometime in the 1920's

Yeah these early records were a huge step in sound quality compared to the Berliners. I don’t find that many of these early records are badly recorded or sound bad, though if the condition is bad enough then it can really make these records unlistenable. Though a 1902 George Robey (which was recorded in the same day along a dozen other records on his first day) that I uploaded was utterly trashed but was still quite intelligible! My latest upload is a disc from a year later which is phenomenal in sound quality and surface noise. Thanks!

Only ever seen this 1903 tearjerker as sheet music, so good to hear it sung in true music hall style. Edith Manley is mentioned in Michael Kilgarriff's 'Sing Us One Of The Old Songs. Sadly, no bio details, but it gives two of her songs as: Silver & Gold, When Daddy Returns. No other info given.

You realize this is making me wanna collect 78s, right? shame I only have a few! that st louis shuffle is a nice one, shame about the issues with it! mound city blue blowers! what a great one that is. Good old Red Mackenzie and it's one I haven't got! and yeah it's a cazoo. That California ramblers was one of the first of theirs I had, UK issue though. Didn't expect that Kaufman to be as good as it was :d maurice shevalier does my head in! He basically speaks with a ridiculous French accent on purpose. jame's 2 o'clock jump is such a classic, wore a copy out as a kid on a portable columbia gram! it's been a long long time is famous cos it was in a videogame. You should probably sell it you'd get more than $50! that Hal Kemp brunswick is nice! That French Samba record was delightful :d awww, Jack Kaufmann is a broken down tramp without money, bless him I once found a load of maybe 30 German Polyphon records in a charity shop, nothing interesting musically but a random thing to see in Yorkshire! That hum sound sounds like your cartridge. Does it happen when your finger is near the wires near the stylus? How the heck did a sleeve from Otley get there! that's an hour from me, it's in Leeds aria. Very strange! with a broadcast twelve in it too! I have an almost complete run of broadcast four-tune going spare but I doubt I'll ever sell it. Little grey home in the west is a favourite. that Thelma Terry is a nice teritory band side, quite rare and great! Your story about breaking a record reminds me of bringing stephen's collection home, I kept the box of fonotipias and rarities next to me and literally clutched it every time we turned a corner! wow! I didn't rais my boy to be a soldier is so clean!

Ah well you’ll get somewhere close to my world renowned collection someday. Listening to it again I do agree, a bit of the grooves are missing and it isn’t in great condition but it could be worse. The blue blowers aren’t really a danceband right? I was very surprised, more hot stuff than vocals. 2 o clock is definitely very good. I’ll have to listen to the other Harry James columbias but I don’t remember many pianos like that. Hopefully at least one of the three copies I found are in E condition so I can get a decent price, but I shall see if I can get that price for a not as good condition copy. I think it actually got so expensive due to the marvel movies, here’s a wiki on the record en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It%27s_Been_a_Long,_Long_Time. Yes, I really like the jazz stuff I got so far! I do agree with that too! Imagine if he made that record during the Depression, but even then singing about being a poor old guy during while being one of the most famous artists of the roaring 20s. I found at least one more polyphon so far, hopefully I find some band or WW1 thing on it. That’d be cool. I had a somewhat similar experience when I found some Italian pressed Columbia records alongside some very nice acoustic records in albums at a thrift store. The same one where they charged 80 bucks per album, yikes. With records it seems that things just get around with no explanation! Interesting to see something I pulled out (other than some niche acoustic thing) to be quite rare. When I bring a box from the storage unit I just hope it doesn’t break a record when turning or making abrupt movements. Yes indeed, I’m very happy that the minority of acoustic records have wear and are worn. Though a decent amount of later stuff has wear and aren’t really as clean.

Nauck’s doesn’t disappoint with condition, or their stock. I found a very clean Tommy Dorsey HMV from the collection (that was bought from naucks) that was a very fun jazz piece and just thought about how much you can get for 3 dollars from there! A great condition and very enjoyable uncommon record to find in the states for three bucks. Though while this wasn’t three bucks I’m incredibly happy to have this (it’s a new favorite for me), they had another Kirkby G&T and a whole section of English acoustic records. Many were not bought after it ended, though I didn’t bother getting them as if I wanted 10 records it would have been a bit more than I wanted for it. I lost and got what I really wanted!

I posted this by R Lloyd Morgan on a Nicole Record. They certainly wrote some good songs for these early musicals. Have listened to a lot of Stanley Kirkby & wonder if you're playing it a bit fast. Records of this age were deviated a fair bit from what was later to become the 78 rpm norm.

@@colonelbogeysfauxcow My copy by R Lloyd Morgan appears slower, but can't be 100% sure I've got it right, as I only have another two of his recordings. Possibly 'an ear for speed' develops over time & of course, familiarity with the artist. Always reluctant to criticise, as I've made some speed bloopers in my earlier postings. Great job, enjoying watching this! Maybe one day we should do a sort of differences in collecting here and in the us interview type thing lol I think that jrm was reissued in the late 30s. Do you find the jrm hmvs often? they turn up very often over here, in fact the first jazz 78 I had was dr jazz. I love Tauber but I'm so sick of seeing his parlo odeons that every time I see something else on PO I get very excited lol fonotype! Aren't they all De Lucia? There were tons of vinyl pressings made of these later on. That Dawson zono doesn't turn up every day. Nice! I do wonder how this collector ended up with so much English stuff! I enjoyed Betty Coed! Dimestore record right? probably also on greygull and stuff. Good old Red Nichols never disapoints sunny side of the street is one of my fave hyltons, the other side's a hot one at least on the hmv Lovely version of in a litle spanish town, very pretty, you don't often hear 78s like that any more as everyone just plays the hot foxtrot type sides! I'd have gone nuts for those silvertones, love 20s pop! take in the sun hang out the moon needs a proper digitisation :d if it wasn't for that crack that other silvertone would have been a beauty! Tauber's English is almost as good as Caruso's! I think that star piano co private record is probably a college song. Might be worth seeing if that college is still around and want it! button buster! what a great title for a laughing record It sounds like you could bennefit from more tracking weight on your turntable yack, Russ Morgan! never was a fan ah, good old california ramblers. Not a Jolson fan though! Journet's coat song - what a classic! Famously Caruso sang this as a bass! When the Caruso was reissued it was the most expensive record in hmv's catalogue even though Caruso had been dead for 30 years at that point. I'll be back :d

Wow thanks for this comment! You’re typing as much as me! I would love to do an interview but I have only collected for only more than a year and I can count how many times I’ve bot 78 lots on one hand, so definitely for a later time. I would definitely enjoy talking about that type of stuff on our own, and I have enjoyed talking about that stuff already with you! I first saw your record burning the iceberg so I thought it maybe 50s, didn’t know a thing about these JRM HMVs before. This is probably the only one I’ve come across, though I do remember a New Orleans footwarmers on HMV (swing?) series so it’s not the only HMV Jazz I have. Obviously I barely see parlophone odeons so I don’t have that issue, but I did have a similar case of Richard crooks who I haven’t really listened to yet. I only heard of phonotye at a Naucks auction so I didnt and still know barely about them, I did feel it was something special though. Nice to hear that, all Dawsons are in my case lol. I also have kangaroo and dingo along with shipmates o mine(?), I haven’t seen the kangaroo around on the net much. I assume eBay, when shipping was manageable and he probably bought lots along with individual ones. Yes, on conqueror which surprised me a bit. Didn’t expect a band at all on it. Thanks for letting me know, I’ll check it out later. I do agree, strange seeing coherent (compared to the not very coherent hot dance and jazz) ragtime from a dance band. Hot stuff is nice but melodically speaking it is lacking quite a bit. I’ll do a digitization no problem alongside my oldies, I hope my recent uploads have been of interest to you. That my future ones to be too, I found an interesting an operatic 12 inch single sided columbia which I quite liked myself! I quite like these country ones, they’re just very nice. It is definitely, funnily enough I called it mooster while calling the title Wooster love song. Interesting to see if this college is in my state. I do have an issue with too much tracking force as it gets the cartridge to actually drag on the record. So I’ve been more cautious, but I will do that along with an increase in volume. Some records are a bit quiet for my taste. Yeah I wasn’t exactly the biggest a fan of whatever that was, is it his thing to do that? I actually found two RCA victor Caruso repress, though the 10 inch one was completely broken in half. The other intact one was a 12 inch I think, I find these interesting as I’ve only seen HMV ones anywhere. I do enjoy any comments or replies so I am awaiting for your return. While I really should stick with going through this collection, would you like any videos going through my victors/columbias/dancebands/british records (lots of acoustics) etc.? Also one record got cut out due to copyright, might happen with a few others.

Hi! Wasn’t notified about your comment but better late than never, it’s unfortunately a somewhat worn copy which is why Is put it through so much filtering. Indeed, I believe the master is either from Columbia (American one) if that wasn’t taken from another place (I don’t too much about masters and the whole process a lot so this very well could be wrong). Not knowing the date of this song, label, and other records of it I thought it was around 1908-1910 though doing some more research it could even be from 1917! It’s really great having you comment hear (an achievement), surprisingly I have more British music hall (if you’d like it) as early on that was my main interest and still is. Though driving around and collecting stacks locally is a lot more fun and much more sensible financially. Again if you have a suggestion for something early I just might have something in the description (I only have a modest collection, though in the future that’ll change).

@@colonelbogeysfauxcow The song dates to 1910. It appears that every time Billy Williams had a new song, he recorded it with several labels, to prevent it being 'covered' He may well have made this recording several times down the years, as it was one of his most popular & enduring songs. Regal acquired several of his masters & pressed them several years after his death. Regal was a subsidiary of Columbia.

Thanks! For playback I have a fairly “entry level” and basic setup for playing, though audio editing software does the magic of removing surface noise through different ways. I have 3 gramophones (2 work) and I would say they sound different rather than worse or better. The modern systems pick up more so the surface noise and clicks are much more audible, though upgrading my system through decent amplifiers and speakers would increase the sound and probably make me notice the surface noise less.
