Share the River promotes the economic, recreational and social vibrancy of Cleveland's waterfront. We create and post original content via our social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, RU-vid) and website to 1) brand Cleveland as a waterfront city and 2) remind people how a cleaner, more vibrant river and lake is an economic driver for Northeast Ohio (as Marshall McLuhan famously coined, “the medium is the message”).

I had to miss last year that would have been my first, but was able to make this year event with some friends of mine, and we had the most AWESOME day! My one friend was interviewed, "THE PIRATE>>ARR" lol, Ed, and watching that take place and just all the other activities before and during and at the end, the only sad thing I can say took place, was the color and debre of the river. But Hey! It's nature. I'm just thankful I could experience this event, and at age 63, and some health problems, I pray there will be more of the same in my future. Thanks Cleveland and the Cuyahoga River crews and participants. Paddle on...🛶

I'll say is that what kinda person who stands so close while the lift bridge is lowering down, I wouldn't do that because it's too dangerous so all I do is stand behind the crossing gate for my safety. I gotta follow the rules everyone has to follow the rules when they stop at a lift bridge that is about to rise up to let the big freighter ship come through. It'll be just like when you're stopping at a railroad crossing I will definitely have to follow the safety rules when I stopped at that crossing, people have to follow the safety rules on that too because I already know that there's just too much accidents at a railroad crossing when there's a car just end up getting hit by a train because some people didn't want to follow the safety rules or doesn't care much about it.

I don't believe the 5 horn blasts were for the searay. It is common for large vessels to sound 5 horns when reversing in tight confines, when leaving a berth and when approaching a rail bridge.
@mirage2521

Absolutely wrong Sir. Reversing is three short blasts, leaving a berth, slip or approaching a blind bend is one long blast. Five short blast are the "danger" signal.

WHAT a pair of MORONS both the "skippers of the yacht and the motor cruiser are. First the motor cruiser gets WAY too close to the freighter, then does a 180 degree turn. NOT smart, something goes wrong, you are crushed like a bug. Second the yacht. Obviously planning to moor alongside, but where were the prepared mooring lines? The guy with the aft lines is last seen holding a length of blue spaghetti, not even ready to be passed to the guy waiting to receive the lines. That line should have been broken out several minutes before, coiled into two distinct coils, ready for either passing or throwing. (Passing being preferable, to prevent rope going in the water with the dangers of getting it wrapped round the prop. Bunch of incompetent monkeys, certainly NOT sailors.

All the captains and their crew’s do a great job maneuvering their ships either through a narrow river or coming in off the huge Great Lakes. Coming in towards the docks to load or unload is so fascinating to watch. I’m grateful to get to see them on the live cams or in person.
@TOTALCAMARO

I don’t care if that captain messed up or didn’t. If I seen that freighter coming in through a narrow river like that I would move away from it. You never know when the bow or stern thrusters are going to kick in. You never know when something can go wrong. She’s too huge to mess with. I definitely know enough to respect something that huge . I’m always amazed on how the captains of those huge freighters can maneuver them through narrow spaces like that. I’m glad no one got hurt.

Regardless the size of a vessel - from a rowboat to a large merchant ship, if you do not follow the Colregs (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, aka 'rules of the road'), you will be held accountable for your actions and results thereof, before the courts. A case in point that all small craft, including sailboats, should always keep in mind, is Rule 9 - Narrow Channels, in particular sections 'a' and 'b' - "a vessel < 20 metres in length shall not impede the passage of a vessel which can safely navigate only within a narrow channel or fairway". Also Rule 18 - Responsibilities between Vessels; in sections 'a', 'b' & 'c', it is stated "a vessel underway shall keep out of the way of a vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre". Clearly, the large pleasure craft just off the port side of the "American Courage" was in contravention of said rules. He should have been charged and fined by the USCG.

22 year boater, I don't see what the infraction of the Sea Ray was. He was abeam of the freighter, and executed a turn while still abeam of the freighter. Maybe during the turn he came closer to the freighter than he was while parallel, but should have posed no greater threat of collision while turning than he did while going forward. Like another commentor stated, it is not obvious that the horn blasts were directed at the Sea Ray.
@smithbf36832
@smithbf36832 6 месяцев назад
Take a look where the freighter was headed. Their next move is a significant turn that will swing the trailing end of the ship towards the power boat. By turning around where he did, the captain of the powerboat removed any ability to maneuver out of the way, and removed the space needed for the freighter to turn. The powerboat skipper should have waited until they were clear of the freighter to reverse.

That's like saying stopping in the middle of a busy intersection at peak hour, and dropping a drift burnout is skilled, you complete and utter moron. That skipper put himself, both sailboats and even the people on the boardwalk in danger. If not from his dumbass maneuvering causing a collision, than from the combined prop and thruster wash. All he had to do was wait. It's extremely lucky that all that happened is that his idiocy was recorded and posted on youtube for people to mock him, and rightly so. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near this idiot on the water.

What the Keyboard Kaptains are whining about is that the SeaRay (white powerboat) got close to the freighter while performing a 180 degree turn. The SeaRay presented NO DANGER to the freighter but the freighter captain blew the danger signal (5 short blasts) to remind the operator of the SeaRay to stay clear. It wasn't a big deal.🙄

Captain is responsible for both ends of his/her vessel - all at the same time. If Courage had needed to put her bow to port - which is likely at that bend in the river - (memorial shoreway/collision bend) the intake on her thrusters could very well have drug the boat into her side - even if the SeaRay powered away from the intake - where would he go? He'd accelerate right into the dock.
