American Courage Blasts Careless Powerboat on the Cuyahoga River

Even landlubbers at the riverside patio KNEW they were witnessing a careless/dangerous move by the 55' Sea Ray's captain. And nobody was surprised the American Courage's captain let the Sea Ray know they weren't having it.
We support and encourage the mixed use of the Cuyahoga River but it is EVERY recreational boater's duty to operate in a safe and proper fashion on the Cuyahoga River's federal navigation channel. And good heavens, MIND THE FREIGHTER! Please don't be like this guy.

It would have been so easy for the boat turning 180° to wait just another 60 seconds for the ship to be out of the way. What was the hurry?

engagement is good. I was raised in a boating family, I live in an area with extensive pleasure and commercial boat and ship traffic- locks, shipping channels, and dinguses that should not be permitted to operate any vessel, even a canoe, abound here. This incident activates rule 34 (d), 7a, 8, 8e and likely more. Anything boat related means insurance! So, not surprisingly almost everything is recorded. The dingus in the searay here had no idea he could become destitute and homeless simply by scraping down the side of the GL carrier. notice at 0.57, the pilot/captain of the American Courage hit the bow thruster! note: they are reversing up this tight congested channel, could have been serious damage.@@EnjoySackLunch

I don’t care if that captain messed up or didn’t. If I seen that freighter coming in through a narrow river like that I would move away from it. You never know when the bow or stern thrusters are going to kick in. You never know when something can go wrong. She’s too huge to mess with. I definitely know enough to respect something that huge . I’m always amazed on how the captains of those huge freighters can maneuver them through narrow spaces like that. I’m glad no one got hurt.

Captain is responsible for both ends of his/her vessel - all at the same time. If Courage had needed to put her bow to port - which is likely at that bend in the river - (memorial shoreway/collision bend) the intake on her thrusters could very well have drug the boat into her side - even if the SeaRay powered away from the intake - where would he go? He'd accelerate right into the dock.

Regardless the size of a vessel - from a rowboat to a large merchant ship, if you do not follow the Colregs (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, aka 'rules of the road'), you will be held accountable for your actions and results thereof, before the courts. A case in point that all small craft, including sailboats, should always keep in mind, is Rule 9 - Narrow Channels, in particular sections 'a' and 'b' - "a vessel < 20 metres in length shall not impede the passage of a vessel which can safely navigate only within a narrow channel or fairway". Also Rule 18 - Responsibilities between Vessels; in sections 'a', 'b' & 'c', it is stated "a vessel underway shall keep out of the way of a vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre". Clearly, the large pleasure craft just off the port side of the "American Courage" was in contravention of said rules. He should have been charged and fined by the USCG.

22 year boater, I don't see what the infraction of the Sea Ray was. He was abeam of the freighter, and executed a turn while still abeam of the freighter. Maybe during the turn he came closer to the freighter than he was while parallel, but should have posed no greater threat of collision while turning than he did while going forward. Like another commentor stated, it is not obvious that the horn blasts were directed at the Sea Ray.
@smithbf36832
@smithbf36832 9 месяцев назад
Take a look where the freighter was headed. Their next move is a significant turn that will swing the trailing end of the ship towards the power boat. By turning around where he did, the captain of the powerboat removed any ability to maneuver out of the way, and removed the space needed for the freighter to turn. The powerboat skipper should have waited until they were clear of the freighter to reverse.

The big metal ship has "bow thrusters" that helps it to turn. They will make a fast stream pushing the little boat into the dock where the people are eating... The little boat could not wait about 10-30 seconds or keep going up river for 10 or so seconds then they would have had the full with of the river to turn around in...... Just a rich boat owner being stupid and showing no care for the saftey of his boat or the people along the river side...0:56 under the lady's arm in the white shirt you can see the metal ship started to use the bow thrusters to push the bow more to the center of the river and the water jet coming to the bank side...

Nothing to see here. The operator of the ship was acting in accordance with Colreg rule 34. An international set of rules that almost every maritme law court on planet earth operates by. No malice, no attitude, no admonishing. How do you know it had anything to do with the boat that was docking? If I was piloting that ship I would mostly be looking astern to see what I was going to hit back there because it appears to be operating under astern propulsion.
