Our larder is much deeper (quantity vs variety) now than many years past. Most of it was purchased at good to great prices per unit at the time it was purchased; between inflation and shrinkflation, the unit price and savings were getting better every month for a while. We begin meal planning with the larder and this has meant some changes in the dishes we prepare. But on and off this means eating a 1 cup cooked serving of cornmeal for $.066 versus a single slice of inexpensive sandwich loaf bread for $.12; rough figures but based upon a 20 slice loaf for $2.49. We are currently using 29oz cans of diced tomatoes(cant remember the price, it was good) and 15oz petitie diced tomatoes in garlic and oregano at 3 cans/ $1 instead of most other tomato products; an immersion blender makes a choice of smooth or chunky tomato sauce. The list goes on.
Ive never had enough storage space to have all the kitchem stuff although for a while, i had a better multi shelf tea cart that put better wheels on and turned into a kitchen appliance cart whose home was a long a wall in the dining room. That was pretty nice but i didnt use a lot of the "things" all that often. - If i were to do it again, i would have a metal cart on wheels and better kitchen appliances of the type that cost much more each but do more things each; and the attachments of course.
No more wasting money - unless we set aside some willy-nilly money. Its not going to be for a while again for us right now, but i like to budget $5 or $10 of willy nilly money every so often which is only to be spent on willy nilly things that tickle your fancy. Typically this calls for a trip to the Now $1.25 Store, a Thrift Store, or a garage sale; its less challenging with $10 to find new wants that glitter.
August 2024. Don't keep up with the Joneses. No eating out, no make-up, minimal skin care, few clothes, only comfortable shoes. Retired early. Crafts from junk or second-hand items. Kids worked as soon as they were old enough. Friends don't care how you dress or how old your furniture is. Tina, Al's wife
Hi Kate great blog! Skin care... lidl do a serum that is £3 (around $5) it's excellent I use that, and I alternate it with a moisturiser (£5 loreal red jar or £3.50 Aldi red jar) so under £10 a month. Here in the UK lidl has an app where if you spend £250 a month you get 10% off your next shop, so I buy my skin care on that week 😜 I have a very simple lifestyle, no debt, if I want or need something I save for it. I like sleeping soundly with no worry's about debt...I have been in debt and got very ill through being stressed out so I learned the hard way😭 I also used to work in an amusement arcade and saw the negative side of gambling I've never been interested in gambling....But I am an ex smoker, 10 years stopped! Caroline
No more wasting money, I have an air fryer and since having one (2020) I've only used my oven 2 times, still use my stove top. I also got rid of my microwave in 2020 as it was breaking down didn't replace it, I use the air fryer as its like a mini oven. I use my crockpot and electric kettle, or coffee pot all of which cost less to operate overall.
I would add furniture to that list! I'm searching marketplace for a gently used sofa, and it's crazy how many people bought sofas for many thousands of dollars only to sell them on marketplace for 1000 or less. Their loss, my gain I suppose!
For many years, I have cut my own hair and once a year I buy blonde colour/stripes, the one with the hat that you draw out your hair from in small thin stripes and it turnes out sooo nice and natural and then it can grow out again. A box costs about 10€, so thats my budget for my hair/year. I cut my both childrens hair also 🙏
TikTok is so bitter sweet lol I find great recipes but 3 hours can be wasted easily lol RU-vid I put on and listen like a podcast so I’m more productive.
I have saved so much money from idiots buying $1000’s of ski gear just for 2 week holidays. As an avid skier I really appreciate their kind donation of in most cases 90% off retail!
I have always bought my cars new. I pay cash and then keep them for 20 years. I don't think this is cheaper, but it does mean I don't have to buy cars very often which is the the worst. I'd rather have a root canal than buy a car.
I was guilty of everything listed. How ever I am considered the most cheapest person in my family now. I refuse to follow trend, as long as my phone works I won't change. Never support apple company. Only free TV over the air or RU-vid. I went as far to remove the light bulbs in my home and installed LED strips that run on 12 volt battery that's solar. Yes I am connect to grid. AC set to 79 in eco mode in South Florida my bill never more than 50. I invest 40% of income. And side jobs I do strictly gos into my portfolio or high yield saving. I have a credit card but it's paid fully every 3 weeks to avoid any interest. No car payment. I tend to order my food online to avoid shopping In stores. I track every cent going out. Warren Buffet is correct on everything on that list. I have no college education. My tiny home is paid for in full.i thought ahead and offered my parents to pay a 3rd of their mortgage to allow me to build on their property to make me co owners so land use of 380 a month I. South Florida long term my parents listed me on the title so going forward this will set me up for life. And with being to parents it's a barter system 2 houses. I do all the yard work and make any repairs and we share food cost and grow a lot of stuff people need to come together more often to get ahead in life.
