My system for not washing clothes too often....my hangers are white plastic ones. They are for clean clothes. Things that have only been worn once and are not dirty are hung up on blue hangers. Easy!
My number 1 frugal habit is to structure my day. I am allowed to have a lazy day, but it must be intentional. Keeping the mind right, helps the spending behavior.
Frugal habits. I replaced my car recently! My old car was only 22 years young. Saved up for new to me car. It took time, but with auto savings made it easy. New car is 3 years old. I was very fortunate - my old car had very few major maintenance problems. Take care of your car and drive it as long as you can :-).
I am determined to drive my 2008 Kia Optima for as long as I can without having to spend more money on it than I already have . It has 145,000 miles and we did put new struts on it to make it more comfortable to ride in longer and a brake job. I love not having a car payment!!! 10:43
My favorite frugal habit is to delay going to the grocery store. I do have a well stocked pantry and freezer so that makes this easier for sure! But instead of buying new ingredients for a meal I try to delay that shopping trip and use what I have ❤
As a self employed therapist now, I often discuss the elimination of alcohol because it absolutely can derail plans to improve your life. Alcohol is a neurotoxin and should not even be consumed by people who take any psychiatric medication. I gave it up because I didn’t necessarily like how I felt afterwards even if it’s one drink! Plus, its now the “ in thing” to be a non-drinker so save your health, your mind and your bank account and give it up! Lol
I needed to hear this I take psychiatric medicine but it can be so easy for the just one drink mindset. Also being young that’s how most people bond ya know?
Our daughter is 20 now but from the time she was an infant we'd go to the library for all different classes as well as story time and checking out books and movies. Library is a great resource for parents and kids.
The frugal habits we do is keep our air conditioner (in 113 degree temps) at 79 degrees, this has really helped our AC bill and it's still comfortable in the house. In the cold mos we use a space heater and use less of our ac/heat. We also do inexpensive entertainment activities like going to the lake and having a picnic in the park and hiking all very inexpensive or free.
Only wash full loads of clothes. Wash in cold. Cold water is never truly cold in FL. Hang all your clothes. Hang the clothes you hang on hangers right from the washer. Hang to dry, then just put away. Cook once, eat twice. Love your channel.
For not washing clothes too much….I’m like the door hook lady. Lol. Plus I have “home/lounge clothes” and “go out clothes” so as soon as I get done with batch errands, I change out of “out clothes” (I put them on the hooks) and put back on the lounge clothes or Jammies. Leave home a few days later and use same outfit again. Too funny. I made Shepherds pie lately also. Lol.
@@sandrafromscotland Aw thanks. Lol. I think maybe the cats “hook trained” me tho Bcuz if there was a pile of my clothes laying around (clean or dirty or in between) they’d lay on it and then you gotta wash it anyways. 😻😻 Funny meme I stole…caption… “my cat listening to all my problems” ( like a therapist). Lol.
I was 10 years old during the energy crisis of the early 70s. I have never left a light on since then. People are astonished how low my electric bills have been since I lived on my own since 1983.
Instead of using expensive rinse products in my washer, I add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to the rinse. It removes the last of the detergent and makes my clothes smell clean. No vinegar smell remains. Especially good if you are sensitive to perfumes. I also use a dryer ball instead of perfumed dryer sheets. White vinegar, $1.50 at Dollar Tree for multiple washes.
We just started our fugal journey in 2024. We have always done some fugal habits but need allot of work with mindful and useful spending. We have already paid off all our CC and just 8k left on our last car payment. Slowly getting there. Our goal is to have a 3 month emergency fund and being debt free (besides the mortgage) by December 2024. It will be tight but as they say a specific challenging goal is strongly motivating. And we’ve got a fire burning. 🔥
Doesn’t work everywhere, but in New England we have basements. We set up a nice, little tv space down there so on days like this week, with temps in the 90’s, the a.c. Didn’t need to go on. I don’t mind the heat, so I stayed upstairs but my daughter ( and the dogs) retreated to the basement ( cool 65 degrees) to watch tv, exercise, and work on projects. That small investment years ago( to make a nice space) has more than paid off in ac savings.
I joined the senior’s centre. $45 for the whole year. I go twice a week. Sit and fit exercise classes and singing for fun class. Plus I go to a free seniors exercise class at my church run by the VON.
This week I only need 3 things by way of groceries (one of them is coffee, so that does constitute an emergency) so I am walking to the local small supermarket, saving time, petrol and the temptation to buy those nice extras that are paraded in front of you at the larger stores.
Happy Frugal Friday, KSquad!! 1. I only do laundry on weekends when it’s off peak. 2. Run dishwasher when completely full and after 10 pm/off peak 3. Collect water in shower while water warms and use to water my flowers. This has saved me huge in water bill 4. Share my trash bill with my neighbors. We split the quarterly bill and they bring their trash and recyclables over every week! 5. Moved irrigation to 5/5 instead of 6/6, off peak! My water and electricity bills have dropped significantly by doing the few things mentioned! 😊😊
My mother always did all her baking one day a week. That way, the oven was always full when she used it, no wasted energy heating it up, or cooking only one item at a time. And, always make enough for more than one meal, eating left-overs is a great way to save energy and time. And, our salads always came from the garden, fruit to eat fresh, or to make pies etc. also came from the garden. We always had enough to share with neighbours and friends.
In Australia its mid winter and just bought 2 new summer dresses drastically reduced. I only buy products out of season. Great money saver. I stock up on non perishable products at end of financial year sales. These range from toothpaste, hair products to coffee. Pet food tins in bulk saves me dollors. Kate you have taught me to be conscious of every dollor I spend. This in turn has increased my ability to save. Thank you.
Always RU-vid problems with your car and know what the problem is BEFORE taking it to the garage for repairs. This has saved me hundreds and probably thousands. Don't get charges for replacing an entire part when sometimes its actually gasket for example. Never pay for cable tv instead only pay for internet and get a roku or firestick instead.
Frugal Habits: 1) I keep a list of grocery items that I will need soon. When I make my grocery list using the websites of the 2 grocery stores near me, I check for sales on those items that I need. If it's not on sale, I wait until it is on sale. 2) I also have my entertainment system things (TV, Apple TV, sound system) plugged into a power strip & I turn the strip off when I'm not using it. It saves money on phantom power charges. If an electronic device has a remote, it draws electricity even when it's off. 3) I use my credit card to buy groceries, gas, repairs to HVAC, etc to get the cash back & pay everything off every month. So far this year I've redeemed $105 that I used to pay part of my balance. This will only work if you pay off the balance every month.
My most recent saver is to learn to live without for a while. Sometimes my old stuff breaks. When it does, I figure out how to not get one right away. I keep a list in my head and watch at curb piles and thrift stores. Most recently, I realized I need a new kitchen scale. I priced them online, but it was 30-40 dollars. Decided I could make do. Looked up how to measure pasta for proper weight. Then I found a scale in a curb pile. Perfect. Next, my 1990 hot pot quit working (goodbye college hot pot 😢) . So sad. Started boiling water for tea on the stove. Found a used hot pot at a free garage sale last weekend. Most modern conveniences aren’t really needed, so there are other ways to do that. I’ll never give up the YMCA though. That helps to keep me as healthy as possible. True about the driving, my kids are always trying to get me to run around. Now they know that mom tries to only go “to town” once a day 😂
Ive started washing my clothes on the delicate or speed washing. Most the time they are not really dirty, they just and don't need the full cycle on the washer. Save water and electricity. Also use half the detergent. My clothes still come out clean.
@@nancyh1892 Or make your own liquid detergent. I used a RU-vid video to make 10 gallons of liquid laundry detergent from about $2 worth of ingredients (Zote soap and some borax.). It works great.
We like these types of passive measures. They do require an "investment purchase" (or rods and curtains) but it is on your time and budgetary scheduling. Once you've installed them however, there is minimal fuss, muss, labor, or cost; 'ya just sit back, let them do thier thing, and let the savings build to first pay for the investment cost then reap the tru savings. If you have a house, look into what are traditionally called "foundation plantings". They used to be standard, before a/c, but can get in the way of repairs and matinenance to the side of the house and even be bad for a foundation. Thier function is to shade the foundation of a house or the exterior space between the side of the building and the ground; keeping the crawl space or basement cool in the summer and warm in the winter can passively mitigate 8nterior temperatures too. A general rule of thumb is nothing closer than 18" from the side of the building; all the more important if you've got an 18" eave over hang and the plants get no rain water. The practical rule of thumb is nothing that a ladder, paint job, gutter cleaning, or roofing will completely kill. The thinking brain towards foundation preservation says nothing with aggressive roots despite being 12 to 36 inches from the building's side. We live in fern country and I like them for an assortment of reasons including being able to trim them down to 2"-3" from the soil's surfaces without killing them. Both American calla lillies and tiger day lilies date back into the 1940's if not earlier and iris where the conditions are tough. We have an enormous number of additional options now adays including a row of sunflowers which help to shade the siding too.

I am incredibly glad not to have declutter my clothes. I have to move house in December and I have over 200 glass jars. Packing them would cost me a fortune if I had to buy wrapping materials. Thanks to my over 3 months of clothes in my wardrobes, I will be able to wrap up all those jars safely.
Great idea using your decluttered clothes. When we moved to our retirement home, I had a ton of old towels and used them to wrap any items that would easily break. Then I took the old towels to an animal shelter. Win-Win
Dont forget to squeez the Toothpaste til the end. Shampoo bottle with a bit of water and a good shake gives you a couple more washing. Use your leftovers, freezer them or be creative the next day, on some rice/tortilla/pasta in an omlet or stew/ soup.
You Tube has saved me a small fortune in leaning how to fix things around the house. The empowerment that comes with that is amazing. Another big savings on AC is to open my windows at night to cool down the house (when daytime can be 90-100+) and using blackout curtains in bedrooms during the day.
During the summer in Texas, opening the windows at night many times have temperatures at 90+ so we can only do this idea in the early fall and early spring. Thanks for sharing.
I'm a 78-yo lady. To save $$s on car maintenance, I change my own cabin air filter and engine filter. 🚘 Read the book and follow the instructions--easy.
Talking about shopping my closet I thought I was a really organised person until I found a pile of T-shirts in a drawer that I didn’t even know I had !! They have now gone into regular T shirt circulation- also would recommend a capsule wardrobe it’s so much easier to get ready in the morning
Buy Christmas and birthday gifts throughout the year at sales/clearance sales. Saves a fortune and saves paying full price close to Christmas. Also saves time running around at the last minute during the Christmas rush.
I have been doing major decluttering in my home and feeling a lot lighter now. I did cancel a subscription I’ve had for years and years but just don’t use it anymore. I’m trying to do better financially.
I use android phones. They work just as good as iPhones. And cost way less. Now is the time to check winter weather gear. Snow blowers. Shovels. Snow tires. Winter clothes. Get the heating fixed if need be. Order the firewood and heating oil. Check space heaters. Why now? It gives time to prepare for the cold weather. Do this with summer gear in April.. Why. It saves money by knowing exactly what you need to replace or repair
Frugal Habits 😊❤😊 I batch my errands also it just makes so much more sense. I deleted apps & emails from stores & restaurants that weren’t necessary. I had a bad Sonic habit no food just drinks it has saved so much.
Library is my fave frugal hack! We have had so much fun at library events, movies, story telling, etc. Check out magazines, dvds cds, and apps give you acvess to more movies shows and music. Love love love our libraries!
I make my own baby wipes with old cut up t-shirts, baby soap and baby oil. I don’t use them for #2s but they work great for #1s! Haha! Another tip is to actually remember to switch your laundry! I am someone who always forgets to switch my laundry! I started setting a timer on my phone to avoid rewashing clothes.
I meal plan and meal prep for Mon - Fri and cook in batches. 4 setving batch, 1 I eat as cookeed, 1 goes for leftovers in the fridge for 2 days later and the other 2 I portion and freeze (like a healthier & cheaper frozen meal when I don't feel like cooking)
Frugal habits. I know many do a load of laundry a day, but I designate a day. I heard the dryer is warmed up and more efficient when drying loads back to back. I do it on the off peak times to save a little more on energy costs.
I hang my wet clothes on hangers in the bathtub curtain rod. I will sometimes then put them in the dryer for 5-10 mins to fluff if they feel scratchy .
Saving first and last had become a frugal habit for me. X amount goes into savings account. Don’t care how much but something. And the day before pay day, I empty half my wallet into my piggy bank. Little amounts grow, and surprise you.
I buy extra when groceries sales for items used . Like my stock items so have and don't have to pay full price for every day use . Yes cost more that week but save in long plus I have pantry for life troubles illness , job lost, etc to fall back on
Me too! I have a couple of videos I follow, and it works out so well. I didn't pay much for them, and I can get more use out them than a gym membership.
These are all very simple, practical and useful frugal tips. Another frugal tip is to grow your own food. I am starting a little container garden on my balcony. Growing some tomatoes. We'll see how it works!
Recently I've had to use ice packs due to a medical need and have discovered an additional way to use them. Rather than cool the entire house we often use fans in a room if the person there prefers it to be cooler than someone else in another area of the house might. I've discovered that the ice pack often keeps me from needing to even use the fan or as the temp is going up it allows me to not turn the fan up higher when using both items. Debbie
Happy Frugal Friday Kate and K Squad. Frugal Habits. I do intermittent fasting. It's good for my body and good for my pocketbook. Just a note though, I am overweight. I would not recommend this for anyone who is under the recommended weight or has an eating disorder.
I dress in layers in the winter, differently in fall and spring, and often even in the summer any more. Layers, especially winter layers, can add up to quite the quantity of clothing in the laundry. For myself, I have returned to examining which layer is actually getting "dirty" and needs laundering then switch up the layer level for some additional wearings. The layer next to the body gets body oils et al. The layer on the outside shows the spills, dribbles, dust, and dirt etc...The middle layer(s) have neither body oils nor spills unless there has been some sweating going on or youve had a spill beyond a dribble. And then, a little dribble (and stains after laundering) doesn't show when its covered up by a top layer.
I stopped wearing wool sweaters for this reason. Wool sweaters are so delicate to wash. The under layers of tees are easy. Down vest or fleece vest over a long sleeve tee is my go to in the winter.
@@sct4040 i looove wool. When I worked where I had to essentially wear a uniform and alsomwith cold blasts of air, imjsed to go thrift shopping for well oversized, men's wool, over the head, sweater vests in January, after Christmas. Then i would wash those vests in hot water and dry on hot to shrink them up, and wear them as undershirts. Of course, if they wore out or kept shrinking in my normal laundry ... they began as bargin thrift store finds.
Love your videos. Here in Australia it's now night 🌙 & I can't sleep - so I'm watching now instead of Saturday morning. Let's be honest...I'll watch it again with my coffee. Your videos are motivating & keep me on track. Thank you 😊❤
Frugal Habits! I stopped buying K-pods for my Keurig. I now buy my favourite coffee beans, ground them and put them in my reusable K-cup. Add some cinnamon to it and have a great cup of coffee to start my day!
I stay out of stores. I joined Walmart plus, and it's worth it to pay the membership fee. If I don't see it, then I won't buy it. I only get what I need this way.
With only 1 to 4 people at the table, consider making that 6 to 8 serving casserole, crockpot concoction, dessert, etc... Serve half as a "fresh cook" and let the other half cool while eating. Put into the fridge when cooled to stiffen up then spoon onto a piece of plastic wrap. Use that plastic wrap and maybe another to make it freezer ready, write the date and what it is, then freeze. With the power of a microwave, unwrap then thaw and heat on those nights you dont want to cook.
Frugal habit..hooks on the back of bedroom doors to hang their own towels one set. They do their own laundry and often hang them to dry. I make sure they are nice and each set is different. Cut Mount Washmore in half and has saved so much aggravation!!
Also on saving energy, I unplug appliances if I’m not actually using them. This is my microwave and my little one pot cook stove because even if the appliance is turned off, it’s still using energy. It’s called phantom energy or better I like the term “vampire” energy
I use grocery store coupons, I use cash for gas at the cheapest local station, I get my hair cut at the least expensive place and only once per month at the most, and I don't go to the car wash...I use the do it yourself place about every three weeks.
Frugal habits! Simple routines on autopilot keep me going in the right direction. Capsule grocery list/menu thanks Kate! Capsule wardrobe refreshed twice a year. Simple skincare- cheaper and better for the skin. Totally agree with washing less, clothes last longer & look nicer. I use a delicate cycle which uses less power and doesn’t beat the clothes up.
Here is my contribution to a frugal habit: Shop the clearance aisle first because it may have just what you need at a discount. I do this at Ikea and Walmart and Food For Less. I also buy only what is on sale. I never buy full price.
Frugal Habits! I turn the water temperatre down in the summer and reduce the time the water is on for, the water takes less time to heat up from the mains during summer and I don't like a super hot bath (only in winter) but prefer a warm soak, also turn down the shower temperature so have a cooler shower. Our plugs in UK mean we don't need to unplug eveything just flip the switch to off and the power is off. When cooking I make at least double and then freezer for later when it's hot and I don't want to have the oven on. Love those leftovers they are your future gift to yourself! Even if a couple of spoons of corn are left over I add these to tiny containers and freeze, same with mashed potatoes freeze in portion sizes in bags then I can add to another dish another time, I do the same with jar sauces. If veggies start to mount up then make a fritatta with them all and eat for lunches and with salad.
Frugal habits. I reuse the envelopes and paper from junk mail. I also cancelled my Keurig subscribe and save. Which didn't save me anything after all as I missed the cut off for cancelling and got charged for an order I didn't need. I practice A lot of these. Bought a gym membership once and never used it. 😣
Omg Kate 🤗 I am so happy your video is up.. it’s the perfect lift me up I need as I am still picking n choosing things for my new home & still have not been able to move fully yet.. 😊 ur the perfect sunshine to my Friday 😊 &,any day
Fasting is also a great way to save money and lose weight. Being a Mindful Prepper mitigates inflation and shortages, very handy to have a back-up for emergencies.
Great suggestions, I always combine my errands, I always think ahead of my trips and check what can combine , plus I always keep my tires inflated with my little electric tire pump, not need to drive to the gas station
Such a good video and brilliant ideas in the comments. Mine is to not buy too much school uniform for my children. They wear each item twice and one jumper all week. Reduces the cost and the washing and they really don’t sweat. I also put all the clothes on a quick wash with a lower temperature and put in less washing liquid and line dry as much as possible.
