Hey, great vid! As i russian i ve never actually heard the melody of russian church thats sounds similar to the main theme. Can you give me recording on youtube or maybe give me russian name, because i cant find it myself.

@joshvigranmusic 12 дней назад
Hi! Sorry for the late response. In one of the follow up videos I found out that was actually a rumor that wasn't exactly true, however there is a particular chant that is very similar. I found the article on JSTOR I think, or some academic journal but unfortunately since I graduated I have no access and have been unable to find it. But Rachmaninoff said that the theme "wrote itself". Any similarities to chant must have been subconscious in that case.

@@joshvigranmusic when waiting for your answer i actually found a recording on youtube of the particular tune you are refering to ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zMvT-yR39_A.htmlsi=ZVTQBxmhxHbIZk1r But i think there are multiple melodies in both church and party music of russia that have some similarities. I think that was actually the idea, and thats why melody "wrote itself". Its just immidiatly so familiar and feels like something you deeeefinitely heard before. I think that is the feeling Rachmaninoff wanted the listener to have.

This is an excellent video Josh. It was fascinating learning what it takes to not only play this difficult passage, but also what it takes to learn how to learn it. You do an excellent job of describing this. I never realized that one could suffer injury as you did. I should have realized this though. Is there a part II? Will you perform the entire cadenza for us? This truly is a remarkable piece of music. I listened to the ossia cadenza thousands of times.

The full concerto is up on my page! And yes, almost every single professional musician I know has been injured at least once. Tendonitis can take a while to heal and so can carpal tunnel so it's important to be careful especially when playing difficult music for extended periods of time.

I really do love this concerto. As a young composer, I look to it as a shining example of what good concerto writing is. It’s flashy, but not for the sake of it. The motivic development is very creative and so subtle it took me many critical listens to hear everything. Thank you for this. Corect me if I am wrong. This "Tender and loving" melody (about 17:10) before Theme 2 remind me strongly of Concerto 2 (as about 1:15) , enough much that I see it as a intentionally quotation, or reminder from "another life". By the way, great analysis and curage to present so complicated musical consideration to classical music non initiated public (like me)!
@joshvigranmusic
@joshvigranmusic Месяц назад
There is some similarity there definitely in terms of affect. I've wondered before if Rachmaninoff intentionally wanted them to be similar, but I haven't personally found any reference to it in his writings.

Should the first B in the melody note be played after the sextuplet is over or between the 4th and 5th notes of the group?
@joshvigranmusic
@joshvigranmusic Месяц назад
Good question! Even though the right hand isn't explicitly marked as a sextuplet, the last note is always vertically aligned directly over the last note of the LH sextuplet, and the common practice is to play them aligned. As far as I know that was Rachmaninoff's intention, sort of like the Baroque practice of double dotting. In any case when it happens at full speed any effect of polyrhythm is lost so I find it's cleaner to play them aligned. Plus the rhythm has more "snap" to it!
@joshvigranmusic
@joshvigranmusic Месяц назад
At the point of filming this video I did the polyrhythms in slow motion but now I keep them aligned after realizing the vertical alignment plus the fact that many pianists seem to play them aligned.
@dcunited710
@dcunited710 Месяц назад
@@joshvigranmusic thanks for the explanation. You’re absolutely right. 👍🏻
@dcunited710
@dcunited710 Месяц назад
@@joshvigranmusic I noticed the vertical alignment as well but my calculations had that note fall between the 4th and 5th notes of the last sextuplet in that measure. I don’t think it’s worth being that accurate because (like you said) the polyrhythm will vanish at the required speed. Thank you :)
